Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater

Konami has redeemed itself.

After the atrocity of Sons Of Liberty, in which the player was forced to take the role of the simpering long-haired twink “Raiden”, they have made a great game here. I just got Snake Eater yesterday, and so far I am having a good time with it.

That cutscene with Snake fighting a young Revolver Ocelot absolutely kicked ass. Although I don’t see how young Ocelot’s 17-year-old American-sounding voice ever matured into the villainous British-accented one in Metal Gear Solid. Maybe he started smoking? And why do all the Russian soldiers have American voices? And why does the Russian scientist have an English accent? Why did they develop the whole “backpack” system and the need to hunt for food, ostensibly to be realistic, while at the same time Snake can magically change his entire outfit, inculding face paint, in three seconds?

They’re speaking Russian.

No, really. At the end of the first meeting with Sokolov, he says, “Your Russian is excellent. Where did you learn it?” So at least some of the conversation was in Russian, and just translated to English for the audience.

They should have done it like in Eternal Darkness where they begin bu speaking their native language, but it then fades into English, for our benefit. It was very well done.
