MI Dopers: Brahms and Dope in Ann Arbor Oct. 5-8

Your very own Geobabe will be descending on Michigan the weekend of October 5-8 to perform the Brahms Requiem with the Smith College and UMich Glee Clubs. According to the info I have received so far, the concert will be at 4 PM on Sunday the 7th and tickets are $8. I will be arriving in Detroit on Friday morning, will likely be in rehearsal most of the day on Saturday, perform Sunday afternoon and leave Monday.

This promises to be an extraordinary musical event. We performed this piece in February at Smith, and it was amazing. If you have never heard this piece, it is stunningly beautiful, and if I say so myself, we more than did it justice–Jonathan Hirsh, the director of the Smith Glee Club, conducted, and he is a wonderfully talented musician (he studied with Jerry Blackstone of UMich). Given recent events, it takes on even greater meaning, and is likely to inspire more than a few tears among the performers and director, not to mention the audience.

So, the first question I have is, who wants to come to the concert, second is, who is free to get together one or more evening(s) that weekend, and last and most important, can somebody put me up? I have reserved a rental car, so transportation is not an issue.

I’d really love to see some of y’all again, meet the rest of yas, and have everybody come hear the Requiem.

Yes you did, and yes it was. Robot Arm says check it out.

Hey! Isn’t BunnyGirl planning on attending that? Maybe if I beg real hard, I can scam a ride with her. I’d love to attend!

Wait, where is the time alloted in your schedule for us to take you to the all-nude strip clubs in Windsor, Ontario?

Ooooh, good idea, Cranky. I haven’t been to Danny’s in years.

Well, I suppose Sunday after the concert is a possibility. My flight doesn’t leave until 3 in the afternoon on Monday.

This sounds like a great concert, and bonus of meeting Geo and some of the Michigan Dopers I haven’t actually met yet. And Mrs. Younger will love the concert idea…

How 'bout dinner and drinks after the concert? P’haps one of the more familiar Ann Arborites could suggest a dinner place (as my blood runs green, I’m the wrong one to ask.) And no, I’m not interested in Danny’s afterwards. Then again, maybe Mrs. Younger would be?

Looking forward to this…

Paul

There are some nice restaurants right around Hill Auditorium, actually. I assume it’s gonna be in Hill. Which is, by the way, a super venue. If some of you want to come to my house first, we can carpool to campus. I’ve got my super-duper $400+ per-year parking sticker that lets me park right next to Hill. Of course, parking in downtown Ann Arbor is free on Sundays.

Oh, look at me forgetting! I should offer to put you up, Geobabe! What an ass! I assumed they were making you stay all together. I didn’t read your first post closely. Okay, first of all, would you be offended by an unfinished basement? We have a bed set up down there; it’s where my mom stays when she visits (we throw down food and beer and mending for her to do, ha ha). In other words, it’s got a concrete floor and exposed insulation, but the bed is comfy.

We also have a cat and dog–any allergies to worry about? I also have a 2-year old, but no one I know of is allergic to him.

Since I am coming as a Smith alum, rather than a current student, I am making my own arrangements for lodging. I could possibly impose on the business manager to find a place for me, but I’m assuming the UMich guys are putting up the Smith gals, and while the idea of staying with a young man is appealing in its own way, I’d frankly rather stay with an adult. So Cranky, your basement sounds absolutely delightful! I’m not allergic to any sort of animals, so no worries there. Thank you!

Wheeeeee! A Houseguest!

You don’t know what you’re in for. [evil laugh]

Honestly, I’m psyched to have you.

Cool! Now, let’s keep our fingers crossed that there aren’t any problems with canceled flights–with the financial freefall the airlines are in, that is my biggest concern.

Ooh, ooh, can I come! I live in A^2.
Let’s see… Red Hawk and Ashley’s are both close to Hill, and both are pretty decent spots for drinks n’ pub food. Red Hawk is a bit more upscale with better food, but Ashley’s has a MUCH larger beer selection (hundreds).

A short walk away (admit it, almost everything in downtown Ann Arbor is a just short walk away) on Main Street are all manner of restaurants, brew pubs, etc to choose from.

I’ll offer you my couch as a back up plan, but be forewarned, its a bit cozy right now with 3 adults and 4 cats in a 2 bedroom apt. There’s always room for one more though!!! Just like college all over again.

I think flights to DTW are in little danger of being cancelled, as long as you are flying Northwest… its their hub.

just checking, should we make our own arrangements for tickets through University Musical Society?

I graduated from Smith in May, but graduating seniors were invited to make our own way to UMich to participate in the second performance if we wished. Being that I am in neither Northampton or Ann Arbor at the moment, my info is somewhat limited. All I’ve gotten so far is rehearsal on Saturday, concert on Sunday. If anyone closer to the source can track down more info, that would be great.

Come to think of it, Cranky, you’re actually at UM, aren’t you? Can you see if you can find out more about the concert? Particularly if tix are available ahead of time, and if discounted if purchased in advance?

Okay, I looked into it, and in typical UM fashion, since its not a UMS event, it barely exists. :(. I’ve emailed the Men’s Glee club to see if I can get some info on the wheres, whens, & how muchs. Hopefull I’ll hear from them soon. I’ll keep you updated.

Geobabe in da house!!

How very cool! I’ve been waiting with baited breath for this and am so excited that IT’S NOW HERE!!

I love choral music and I’ll be bringing a box of tissue with me 'cause I’m a big mushpot (MCI commercials used to make me cry  ). We have plans that Saturday with some friends in Detroit, but I and hubby will be there Sunday with bells on. And we’re up for dinner/drinks after too.

I was going to offer a place to crash, but Cranky beat me to it and she is closer (I’m an hour away). But, if something were to fall through for Cranky, you’ve got a place here!

Cranky, can we depend on you to find out about how to buy tickets?

Pers, you can definately ride with us. We’ll work something out - we can talk at the Wring-O-Rama Stamp Club in a couple weeks.

And Paul, wanna hear something funny? We were having dinner al fresco with our neighbors (grad students at MSU) and we were talking about the university sports and I mentioned that my favorite part was hearing the band play. I then started humming the tune that I thought was the Spartan theme (and remember, I work at MSU). My neighbor laughs and says, “Yeah, but you’re humming the Michigan song.” Oh, the shame! :stuck_out_tongue:

God, it took me 15 minutes of searching. That typifies what’s wrong with this damn University.

Anyway, tickets are $5. At the door or in advance from the Men’s Glee Club. I can try to get us advance tickets if you’re concerned about getting in. I also have the time as 3 pm, at Hill.

Hello Again, I finally found it by going to the website for the CIC (Campus Information Centers).

Cranky, I’m all for carpooling from your place. Randy and I will probably have Persephone in tow; got room for 3?

Hey, Bunny? I wuv you.

Cranky, thank you for tracking down the info. I adore Jonathan beyond all reason, but getting him to return emails is worse than pulling teeth.

OK, I’m getting excited about this now. Woooo!

So as not to make this too blatant a bump, lessee who we got so far:

Persephone
CrankyAsAnOldMan, my charming hostess
Paul The Younger and Mrs. Younger
Hello Again
and let us not forget the lovely, effervescent and utterly unforgettable BunnyGirl

Who else? You know you wanna come!
