MI Dopers: Brahms and Dope in Ann Arbor Oct. 5-8

Okay wait a minute. Is the concert at 4 or at 3???

I’ll check here when I get to my mom’s. Oy vey!

Just wanted to wish all of you guys a good time. I’m starting to miss Ann Arbor again!

(I was in the U-M Women’s Glee Club, and I was quite annoyed to hear they’d be singing in the Brahms Requiem the year after I graduated. Isn’t that always the way? :frowning: )

You know, I’m dying to say something pretentious like, “Did you notice one of the second violins was 1/16 of a note flat?”

Actually it was great (and would have been better if I really knew German). The restaurant afterwards had superb lamb, and the company was, as always seems to be at Dopefests, top notch. It was a pleasure meeting two more Dopers for the first time (Hello Again and Geobabe), and I especially enjoyed the nice long chat with Geo back at Cranky’s house (with Cranky jumping in on occasion when not too busy with the young’un). That conversation alone ranged through Middle East Geography, tectonic plates, searching for extra-terrestrial life, and torturing animals to determine one’s longitude–and that’s just the parts I remember.

You guys are so much fun.

I too am home. Been home for a while, actually. Just catching up on some news.

Alas, I was unable to make the concert, because I apparently can’t read, and got the times mixed up. But i dd go to Thanos, and spent a nice evening with some Dopers (mrblue already listed them). Mr. Persephone came along, but as is his way, didn’t say much. He speaks better with a guitar.

After everyone else left, Hello Again, my husband and I went for ice cream. She is a charming, cute little lady, and actually laughed when Cranky asked her what she did in her job for Borders bookstore, “besides plot the demise of small bookstores everywhere.”

Geobabe makes me very, very jealous. She is tall, willowy, beautiful, charming, and smart. Seriously. I am awed by her.

mrblue brought me a gift, from Stonehenge. Not the cheesy t-shirt I thought, but just as good. A keyring with a small monolith in relief on it. I love it! It’s just so…me. He will most definitely be an asset to ChickDope. Oh yeah.

Let’s not leave out BunnyGirl and Mr. BunnyGirl (imagine if he were actually named that laughs). Of course, you and she are regular fixtures at these Michigan events, so we just assume you’ll both be there by default…

 yourself! I’m flattered, really I am. I’m just sorry I didn’t get to talk to you more; Bunny and I had some catching up to do, so I kind of neglected the folks at the other end of the table. I’m looking forward to spending more time with you at ChickDope. Same for Hello Again.

mrblue92 and I did have a very nice chat back at Cranky’s, where I revealed to him just how much of a geek I really am.

I’m glad those who were able to come to the concert made it, and sorry those who missed it, missed it. It was an amazing experience for me. I cried at the end because it was over. It is such an incredible piece of music and I am so fortunate to have been able to perform it not once but twice with two such phenomenal conductors; Jonathan Hirsh in February, and Jerry Blackstone this time. Jerry, by the way, is a GOD. Now I understand why Jonathan is so good.

My thanks again to Cranky for being a great hostess. Your cat is plump, your child is adorable, even when given to fits of two-year-old-itis, and your husband seemed nice enough  --I was very impressed by his woodworking skills. Too bad I was too exhausted to really appreciate the charms of Ann Arbor.

Keep your fingers crossed, everyone, that my trip back isn’t like my trip here was!

I suppose the “I Love Planetary Geology” tattoo is kind of a tip-off.

But aren’t we all geeks by sheer virtue of being regular members on an internet message board?

Who you callin’ short, shorty!

It was really cool to meet all of y’all and I can’t wait to do some serious kickin’ back at Chickdope. As I was telling persephone I can’t shop except by committee so I’m going to need all the moral support I can get. Plus, I never really got the chance tor eveal the true depths of my geekiness.

Oh, don’t worry. I can smell a fellow geek at 50 yards. Even if I didn’t have such good geek sense, let’s look at the facts:

** Posts on the SDMB

** Reads science fiction

I don’t think I need to go on.

Although I must say your outward appearance was utterly normal–I commend you on that. A less-informed observer might have been fooled.

Okay, just one photo. This one is of me, MrBlue92, Geobabe, Bunnygirl, and bunnygirl’s husband.

Home again, safe and sound. Unlike my trip there, my trip back was entirely uneventful. Whew!

Nice picture, Cranky. I usually hate how I look in pictures (the one on the People Pages is a professional shot and one of the few of me I actually like), but that one came out pretty good. My compliments to the photographer.

Next stop: ChickDope!

Sorry I was a no-show, guys - it turns out I had more work to do this weekend than I thought I did (I actually STUDIED for the Chemistry exam I just walked out of, and I think I did pretty good!). Of course, the time I don’t go is the one time that Mr. Blue needs a German translator, ach du lieber!

Glad to hear you all had a great time though.
