Michael Flynn's Shining City on the Hill - For Christians Only

I think that’s the kind of conservative I was years ago, but I couldn’t be one anymore. I realized nothing coming out of the right wing had any resonance with my values or opinions.

Thing is, we used to have a far higher quality of conservative. The kind you could be proud to get into an actual argument with. The degeneration is noticeable and has driven some like Atamasama away from it.

And we also had a far, far higher quality of committed Christian as well, e.g. the late Polycarp. Who some of the current crop probably would not even count as one, alas.

OTOH that is most certainly not what I’m looking for to throw my money on at the strip club, so we’re good on that count.

That heifer was born 3 years ago - nothing since? Or is that (as I expect) another disqualification?

Yeah, I think so. Among them the carefully birthed and raised children kept utterly ritually pure (to the point of being carried rather than being permitted to walk on most ground).

But, beyond the multi-year project of raising such children while guarding the life and health of said red heifer, the existence of a cow that meets the requirements is so damn rare as to be in the category of a G-d commanded miracle.

I vaguely remember a (recent?) movie showing a kid who was being raised so that he was being kept ritually pure. Anyone remember this?

Many years ago a white bison was born in Canada. Wife was overjoyed, believing that the return of White Buffalo would usher in a golden age of peace and prosperity (she was a piss-poor Christian).

It didn’t happen.

I think they are a victim of the all-or-nothing brand of Trumpian conservatism. Previously, you could be (as a not so uncommon example) a socially liberal, but traditionally small-government, fiscal conservative Republican. Heck, prior to, say, the Obama era, I was equally happy to describe myself as either a Socially Liberal Republican or Fiscally conservative Democrat.

But starting in the Obama era (not that there weren’t previous strong hints especially in the Religious Right Pandering), you became all or nothing. To be a ‘true’ conservative, you had to be a gun toting, abortion hating, LBQT+ fearing, (Christian) God-loving conservative or you were a RINO at best, a secret Democrat (read Socialist) at worst.

And the Trump years took that and turned it up to 11. So the ones that truly were willing to see points on both sides of the spectrum generally became ‘Conservative’ Democrats, and otherwise either dropped out or became ‘born-again’ fact-free Trumplicans. I’ve seen it happen to a few former friends, and it was exactly like dealing with people who suddenly ‘got religion’. The person they were before has been voluntarily thrown away, likely never to return. Their choice, which I may regret, but again theirs. Right up until they try to force their choice on myself or anyone else.

Did it have six legs and could it fly? Because that could usher the return of someone else.

Nah, this was American Indians in Canada, not Vikings in Minnesota.

You’re referring to this - a horse with eight legs. I was actually referring to him.

I remember an episode of Millenium all about a boy raised to be the Kohein Gadol (The high priest) of a new Temple. While X Files went back and forth from Monster Of The Week and Grand Government Conspiracy episodes, Millenium went between Serial Killer Of The Week and The Apocalypse Is Coming episodes. I liked Millenium and was sad when it got cancelled. It did get a kind of series finale on an episode of X Files.

Other episodes of Millenium, included a Soviet man who was the antichrist. “He’s the deceiver of all mankind!” and the head of the Millenium group moving to a cozy cabin in the woods with a certified authentic piece of the True Cross.

It was over the top, but it was very well done.

Coincidentally enough that’s around the time I started slipping away from the right. By the end of the Obama era I considered myself a right-leaning moderate.

I actually respect you for that @Atamasama - a lot of people who got that disillusioned just dropped out with a ‘plague on both their houses’. Better to keep trying, even if sometimes it feels futile, than to stand aside and just hope things change for the better.

And for what it’s worth, while I lost a few friends to the aforementioned polarization, you have at least one fellow thinker among my personal close friends. Prior to that era, he had at one point said that “his arm would fall off if he didn’t vote a straight Republican ticket.” These days he votes mostly for Democrats, if they don’t repudiate the violence and bigotry of the modern Republican era. We both kinda like John Kasich though - another person with (more traditional) Republican credit than Trump ever had who has since become leper, outcast, unclean!

That’s the full size model. I was talking about the economy model. With gas prices going up even the Æsir have to watch their penningars.

I found what I was thinking of; a ten-episode miniseries called Dig. Sorry for the hijack.

I’d actually argue that Republicans (not conservatives) care less and less about the Christian thing. The alt-right doesn’t consider themselves Christian, and neither do a lot of QAnon followers.

My understanding is also that there are no “lost tribes” of Israel: the Israelites mostly moved Judah after their capture by the Assyrians. Are there other groups you guys are talking about who need to be present for the Third Temple?

You may be thinking about the miniseries Dig from 2015.

The kid was being raised by a cult in New Mexico.

Oops. I see this was already covered above.

So, since we were largely agreed about Flynn’s probable motivations, it is fun to watch the anger grow between fellow-travellers over failing to share the grift…

The falling-out, which both Flynn and Powell have declined to air publicly, began as early as April, barely three months into the Biden presidency. According to the knowledgeable sources, tensions between the two began simmering over large sums of money, including the amounts fundraised for Defending the Republic, an organization founded by Powell. The group’s stated purpose, as it was pitched to conservative grassroots donors, was to fund Powell’s notorious “Kraken” lawsuits targeting the 2020 election outcome, and according to Defending the Republic’s paperwork, its board initially featured Flynn, his brother Joe, and Wood.

It was in those early months of the Biden era that allegations began emerging that Defending the Republic’s war chest was getting drained by Powell—not to advance the organization’s pro-Trump agenda, but to offset Powell’s ever-ballooning legal expenses.

“How dare you spend our, I mean, the people’s money without giving me my cut… I mean, how dare you!”

For more on the in-fighting……this article likens it to an episode of The Apprentice, where the top prize is “Trump doesn’t destroy you today.”

Sounds more like “The Human Centipede” for conservative jackasses.

Crayons – exactly.
