No. But I think it might serve you well to listen more carefully. Did they all say the attacker was black?
Or would they simply not have specified a race if the attacker had been white?

Well *there *you have me beat!
But I *have *cut way way back on my beer.
L’il Puck, I’m glad you’re posting here.
I’m sorry that, like Hippy Hollow implied, (and like you with the face found out rather pointedly in one of the longest Pit threads ever), here on the Dope we know that systemic racism against black people just doesn’t exist in America anymore. No one is racist unless they own it, like unwashed brain said, and every instance of discrimination against a black person can easily be countered with one just as bad against a white person.
And believe me, it always is. Because it’s totally relevant. To suggest that there is somehow a special problem of race relations between white and black in America is absurd. There’s just Bigotry, and it’s color blind, like more black people should try to be. In fact, black people are much, much bigger racists than white people, who set an excellent example with their civilized willingness to let the past be the past.
Oh, also, it isn’t racist if you think black people have a cultural disinclination to get educations and pull up their pants. It isn’t racist to suggest that perhaps the real problem is that black people just need to take personality responsibility for their failure to do as well as white people. So it’s definitely not racist to scream “nigger” and threaten to lynch someone, or anyway, it’s not automatically racist. In order to be racist, you have to hate black people. Nobody here hates black people! They just wish they would stop lying about white people all the time. Or get over their delusions. That’s all. It’s not racism to want someone to see the light.
Not here in Doperland.
Oh goodie, we’re going to make this a personal thing. Keep focusing on me, and avoid all the other challenges to your original postings in this thread that other people made. You’re making quite a name for yourself amongst Doper debaters.
That’s not quite what’s happening here though. If Li’l Pluck had brought up wage discrepancies or social experiments showing Black guys getting passed by taxis for White fares that would be quantitative or qualitative data. Set up some cameras showing white girls clutching their purses. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens but I also wouldn’t be surprised if the feeling was magnified by earlier mentioned Observer-expectancy effect. cowgirl could have REALLY backed Li’l Pluck up by mentioning how she always clutches HER purse a little tighter when strange Black men are around. heh.
If Richards offered to do it then every ear in North America would pop from the vacuum created when they snatched him up. In fact Left Hand of Dorkness, that’s the only way for him to dig himself out of this hole. Being on that show and demonstrating to everyone that he isn’t a racist for 6 months or a year (however long a household lasts on that show). Sentenced to Reality TV probation!
Nah, your constant clinging to some imaginary bandwagon of popular support based on your lack of reading skills and inability to form any argument of your own makes you look pathetic.
Hell, he might even end up dating Flavor Flav. That would absolve him.
Of something, anyway.
“Imaginary bandwagon of popular support”? What the hell are you talking about? Ah, you know… it doesn’t even matter. You’ve gotten to the point of just spewing personal insults anyway, so go on with your bad self.
What does anyone see in that man?
That Bill Hicks clip linked earlier seemed about as misogynistic as the Richards clip seemed racist. Why is the former considered brilliant, but the latter irredeemably offensive?
Is this part of the ubiquitous undercurrent of misogyny prevalent on the dope that’s often alluded to?
Because, seriously, that Hicks bit was pretty fucked up. And it wasn’t any funnier than the Richards bit. Is nigger really that much worse than cunt?
Hey, remember when I frequented the Dope and made relevent contributions to threads like these? Good times, man. Good times.
Don’t really have all that much to add to the conversation. I just thought I’d chime in since Hippy Hollow, you with the face, monstro and now Li’l Pluck have made their comments. Good show, peeps.
For the record, I think any white guy who calls a black man a nigger repeatedly in the heat of anger after making a pseudo-lynching reference (his use of “we” is subtly telling – he thinks the audience is on his side) and then trying to marginalize/rationalize his error in judgement by trying to make it seem like everyone else is overreacting by making light of it (“They’re going to arrest me for calling a black man a nigger.”) is demonstrably deeply bigoted and probably racist.
Career: done. And they can go ahead and have a Seinfeld Ten Year Reunion but HE wouldn’t be a major part of the show. They’ll Lisa Bonet his ass.
My thoughts exactly. I keep getting told how great Bill Hicks was, but after just watching 4 videos on Youtube, I barely smiled.
Yeah, I’m not sure what makes that Hicks bit great. I personally hold back on the “misogynist” tag because he might have a point that a guy yelling nothing but “You suck!” would have been dragged out by his heels a lot quicker than a woman. Also, he calmed down and actually addressed the fact that he was raging right there - he didn’t wait for his bigshot buddy to set it up for him a few days later.
Because that’s what Bill Hicks did. If that clip was an aberration, you might be able to say he was really a misognist - but his act generally included remarkably offensive comments about a number of groups of people, plus insults to audience members. Like him or don’t, he was pretty much an equal-opportunity offender, and that does make him different from Richards, who just wigged out this one time.
Shrug. Good luck convincing anybody who knows me that I’m a misogynist.
And perhaps as proof of what I said, most of the audience laughs and claps during the Hicks clip (and during his “Hitler had the right idea, he was just an underachiever” rant, which I also watched). One of the things Hicks did was the whole ‘super-rage overreaction’ thing, which Lewis Black and Denis Leary still do today. The crowd obviously understood where he was going, and the people watching Richards were (justifiably) confused with why he jumped right in with the “he’s a nigger” stuff, like he expected the crowd to think that meant something.
Askia! Been a while bruh, what’s up?
I’ve since had a chance to revisit the apology video, as well as hear from Sinbad who was in the crowd that night (first, what are the odds that a straight-arrow Black comedian would be in the crowd, and second, where the hell has he been?). I didn’t realize he was offered the opportunity to apologize the next night, but declined. (Dumbass. Even a half-assed prompt apology would have earned him some points. Who’s he taking advice from, Ted Kennedy?) The apology came three days later via satellite during Letterman, during Seinfeld’s segment, ill-introduced (even the audience thought it was a joke, prompting Seinfeld to chide the crowd to stop laughing).
I’m less certain of his sincerity now, simply because he looks so desperate - probably because of the damage to his career and reputation rather than concern for those he offended. Usually comedians are quick to defend their own, but both Paul Rodriguez and Sinbad, who attended the show, pretty much told him to fuck himself.
Aine no thang but a chicken wing, bruh. I am cursed, existing as I do with the Oriental maxim warning against living in interesting times.
Because when you’re with a black man, you expect it and thus will tend to observe it. And when you’re not with a black man, you just don’t look for it or recognize it when you see it.
Now, I’m certainly not saying you didn’t see when you were with a black man; every intellectually honest person knows this kind of thing happens and happens a lot. But I’m definitely with MrSquishy on the point I think he is trying to make. I am certain that blacks and other non-whites actually see this actually happen, but I’m equally certain most whites don’t see this happen to them, even when it actually does. For example, when I’m on foot in any city in any part of town, even in my safe, lily-white neighborhood, if I’m standing at an ATM and ANYONE comes up toward, past, or behind me – white, black, brown, or anything else – I instinctively compress my body posture and move closer to the ATM and quickly look to see where my wallet and ATM card is. And there is little doubt that many non-whites will see my reaction and consider it to be a reflection of racism even though it most emphatically is nothing of the sort. The whites who see me do this don’t even notice it, as the observer-expectancy effect tells us.
And the exact same psychological thing is going on when many (though surely not all) white people lock their car doors when someone comes by or whatever. Many non-whites will think it’s racist (even when it’s not), while most whites won’t even see it, just like cowgirl.
Yes, indeed. As a gay child, young man, and adult, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve witnessed the word “faggot” being hurled around in anger even to those whom the shouter never even imagined were gay. Calling someone a faggot is very often a way to try to wound someone as much as possible in a temporary outburst of fury that has nothing to do with whether the offender thinks his target is gay. I’ve learned that it can be just a way to try to injure, and in that way can be just like using the word “nigger” in anger. You gotta learn to rise above it.
Of course, we can’t ignore the fact that in either case, the offender must think the word will injure (or he wouldn’t have used it), and thus displays the offender’s mindset, at least to the extent that it indicates his implanted social prejudices.
But as I pointed out in an earlier post, I don’t believe that merely having the word “nigger” comes to one’s mind necessarily indicates any genuine racism.
Uttered witha joke about lynching, and show a willingness to throw it repeatedly in one’s face in the heat of anger raises doubts out your ability to be tolerant.
