In the latest episode of Boston Legal, Alan is defending the racist parents of a twin girl white power singing duo. Although Alan wins, he snubs the family when the girls start singing “Michael Row Your Boat Ashore” by telling them “you do know that Michael was a gay Mexican Jew, right?” I suppose he could have just been joking but it seems like the sort of thing that they would only write if were true. But according to wikipedia, the Michael in question is the Arcangel Michael, who I suppose who be construed as Jewish and maybe even gay (angels are said to be hermaphroditic), but I can’t conceive of a justification for calling a biblibcal angel Mexican. The song first became popular in the sea islands area of Georgia so if anything I would think it would refer to a black man, possibly a slave. Anyone?
Alan was just yanking their chain. He picked three things that would annoy the racists the most. Don’t read depth into the comment that wasn’t there.
Cecil speaks. And nowhere does he mention Mexicans. The whole thing is probably a joke.
That isn’t Cecil speaking, Marley23, that was a Staff Report by an obscure member of the SDSAB.
That’s Cecil speaking by proxy. It’s inspired by Cecil, if you will.
So mwhat your saying is that according to Catholic SDMB doctrine, a SDASB member speaking in cathedra speaks with the voice of Cecil Himself?
The Pope is infallible, and Cecil (who might be Catholic) is never wrong. I can’t be the only one who’s noticed the resemblance.
And much like the Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy When there is a dispute, its usually reality that got it mixed up
I like that the Google ad at the bottom says, “Find Your Jewish Date!” Wonder if that date would also be Mexican and Gay…hmm, might have to actually click on that ad.
I am sure Alan was just messing with the kids’ heads.
Reminds me of a great story.
One Christmas a guy I knew was working retail in a very upscale shop in Beverly Hills and a young couple came in with the brat child from hell who was running all over the store and screaming and carrying on. Despite requests by the salespeople, the parents just let her continue her rampage and blithely went on shopping.
The guy I knew was furious, so he went to the little girl and said, “You had better behave, 'cause I know what Santa is bringing you and you won’t get it unless you are nice.”
The little girl looked dubious but said, “What is he bringing me?”
Without missing a beat, the guy said, “A real live pony!”
The little girl shut up immediately and was the sweetest little person on earth the rest of the shopping trip.
OK assuming Alan was just messing with them, let’s change the OP, since this severely decreases my satisfaction with the episode, let’s see if we can improve it!

Is there any historical or literary figure respected by most religious and or bigoted folks who if they were better aware of their facts would cause them great shock?
-
Even better, and more appropriate to the episode, is there any such figure in song?
King James I - him of the Bible - was probably gay. But if you really want to annoy religious Christians or Jews, talk about the relationship between David and Jonathan.
You don’t think you may be missing the whole point of the episode, do you…
Wow.
As a resident of the Pacific Northwest, in a decidedly diverse area, I hope they can’t find a suitable residence here. Or anywhere in the US, for that matter.
Well, I guess this is the thread for this episode of Boston Legal. I had given up on the show despite the addition of Constance Zimmer, but somehow ended up watching it this week.
I decided that if Alan won this case, I would call for BL’s cancellation. Who wants to join my letter-writing campaign?
Um… JESUS?
That’s a bit on the nose. Couldn’t they have obfuscated their intended targets a bit better than that?
Agreed. The number of idiots who think he was an English-speaking, blue-eyed blondie… Lordy. You think they’d put two and two together (unless, of course, their god decided to make it five)
Why bother?
Ahem. From the Staff Report:
SDSTAFF Dex replies:
I just wanted to point out which esteemed obscure member of the SDSAB you’re talking about (and to).
I decided that if Alan won this case, I would call for BL’s cancellation. Who wants to join my letter-writing campaign?
Not me. Why would you want it canceled over Alan wining the case? Surely you don’t think it was a tacit endorsement of racism. His closing argument was very similar to the ACLU’s position - albeit a little over the top for comic effect. “If you take these kids away Al Queda will win!” And the “Michael was a gay Mexican Jew” line made me laugh out loud.
