Michelle Obama's outfit

Agreed. Everyone misses occasionally. As to it looking weird with “all the men in suits”, aren’t the men in suits Secret Service? She’s going to spend the next four years surrounded by men in suits. It’s not necessary for her to dress like them, they’re not on a date.

I like a lot/most of her outfits, but this one is fugly IMHO.

Damn, that is seriously ugly – and it doesn’t fit right. Might it be less awful if it did?

I honestly can’t stand most of what I see her wear. I can’t really tell if she’s just that short waisted, or the belts are just not flattering, but they’re not doing anything for her. I think the cardigans are frumpy for a young woman, but I think it’s the fact that usually they’re partly buttoned, which makes them hang funny.

Mostly, I just wish she’d learn to stand up straight, and stop being so round-shouldered. That would make everything she wears look better on her.

It is nice to see her look a bit more like a real person, a real mom, in some of what she wears, and some of her outfits seem to be chosen to be more appropriate to the situation, such as the slacks and light jacket for the Easter Egg party. I did like that one. I like the fact that she’s willing to be seen as a little less formal sometimes.

I think you’re right. It’s either ill-fitted (how does that happen on a First Lady?) or it’s just not designed for her body type. If you’ll notice on that page of Michelle outfits, there’s a side-by-side of the oh-so-unfortunate red-and-black number, on a model with a COMPLETELY different body type. It looks very nice on her! I still wouldn’t choose it for myself, but no way does it scream “train wreck”.

Here’s that side-by-side: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/showbiz/images/attachement/jpg/site1/20081106/000d60aab2a60a7cd7d224.jpg

It really kind of looks like somebody’s been to Michael’s. I mean, I love what she wears usually, b ut this is a miss.

Terrible on a lot of levels. Wrong for her body type and the whole thing, even without the ruffles, isn’t really appropriate out of high school or off a college campus. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen her in a truly heinous outfit.

As bad as the Goodwill outfit was I was more concerned with the 757 flown to London so she could wear it. Here’s a fashion suggestion, tag along on the next AF1 Euro tour and buy yourself something pretty.

That’s interesting when I hear people say that, because I feel the exact opposite. I think all women should play up their hips! I, myself am a big mama, and I am always finding ways to emphasize my hips and thighs, and they do NOT need to be empahasized! That doesn’t stop me from pairing bright red skirts with black shirts and tights so that I can have that big red ‘stripe’ stretching across my hips. I just always like to see big hips and boobs on women. Of course, many hipless women are gorgeous in their own right.

As to the OP, I love everything she wears, the second she puts it on. I particularly loved her inaugeration outfit. Loved it, and loved the color scheme of the family that night the most.

The linked picture is not an outfit I would find great in and of itself, but as others have noted, you gotta love someone with a sense of daring and fun in their fashion choices.

I think it’s admirable that she patronizes blind fashion designers.

I feel like my mother watching her - “stand up straight!” She has the “tall woman” slouch going.

Christ on a cracker! That’s one of the ugliest outfits I’ve ever seen!

Exactamundo. She likes clothes and experimenting with fashion. I’d rather see her out there having fun than wearing only those few things that are sure to be considered “appropriate.”

Besides, it’s cool that the First Lady gives us something to talk about fashion-wise. When was the last time we got to do that?

We spent a lot of time wondering about Barbara Bush’s hugemongous pearls.

Hate the outfit btw, but love her.

Edited to add: Am I the only one that clicked the link for the sketches of proposed dresses and thought that far too many of them had very Jackie O faces?

Flowers are really big right now, (not necessarily 3D ones). The top would look better with skinny jeans or leggings, but that would be too casual for the occasion. I don’t like it, but it is fashionable.

I do this too. Well, not the red skirts/black shirts specifically, but in general I have no problem dressing as though to say, “Yeah, these are my hips, deal with it.”

Hate the outfit in the OP, love Mrs. O. and her fashion sense.

I think it’s very nice that she wore the dress Sasha made for her - in Kindergarten!

Criminey - the rufflles, the colors, the skirt/apron with the pants - where’s a “Yuk!” smiley when you need it?

Since I think it’s an ugly dress, the fashionistas must think it’s the most wonderful thing ev-AH!

I still like her and her hubby, but she’s done better in the dress department. Done better every time I’ve seen her picture, in my non-fashionista-opinion.

I was going to say that it’s way too casual for the First Lady, but then I saw that she was on a sightseeing tour. So I think it would be just barely okay if only she didn’t wear it with black pants.

Dandibear’s comment about her wearing two days’ worth of clothes at once is right on. It’s not an ensemble this way. She should wear it with pants or a skirt that are close, but not an exact match, to the colors in the top. Lavender, perhaps: darker than the flowers on the bottom row and lighter than the belt buckle. Add light shoes, change the necklace for something bigger, fluff the hair back up, and you’ve got an eyecatching June ensemble.

As for the state of the hips, I don’t think there’s room for any real criticism. I think it’s about time we moved on from thinking that if a woman doesn’t have the hips of a nine-year-old boy, she’s a heifer. A real woman is convex.

I’m not really crazy about her anyway, but that outfit screams “Look at my wide hips!” which is not good. I’ve seen a few of those types of outfits on girls half her age and they look iffy at best so I’m not sure what she was thinking.

Oh well, the media usually loves everything she does so she’s fine.

PS: Contrats to Rilchiam for trotting out the old and really tired “hips of a ____ (young) boy” and the even more stupid “real woman” routine to describe anyone who isn’t thick to obese. It’s been far too long since someone reminded us around here that the Straight Dope likes 'em thick. (sarcasm)

That was kinda my reaction, too. Except I thought maybe it was “let-the-girls-dress-Mommy” day. It looked like the sort of thing you’d get from a tween who had access to a pile of trim remnants.

Of course, I’m no fashion plate either, and it really don’t care one way or another what she wears. I am, however, frequently amazed at the things some people get all wound up about. In the grand scheme of things, is someone’s wardrobe so earth-shattering? <shrug>
