You didn’t need to say only. You said “real women are convex” which let’s us know that if you are not convex you are not a real woman. That’s pretty simple, no?
You did make a blanket statement, Rilch. Several, in fact.
I’m with SWB. This kind of stuff really cheeses me off. I saw a magazine cover recently–I think it was Vogue with Beyonce on the cover–with the tag-line “Real women have curves.” Well, some real women don’t have curves.
Most women have fat deposits in the usual places. Some women are stick-thin and flat-chested. Some women are built like linebackers, with big wide shoulders tapering down to hips that are indeed narrower than their waists. Guess what? They’re all “real women.”
And just for the record, I’m not saying this because I’m one of those stick-thin flat-chested women. Just the opposite. I think it’s great that there is some push-back against the idea that a woman has to be shaped like Heidi Klum in order to be considered attractive, but choosing a different group to exclude…well, same song, different verse, as they say.
I didn’t know I had to weigh every word in an IMHO thread about what someone wears. Sleeps chose to get hostile*, but my comments were not meant to provoke anyone. Nor were they meant as an official pronouncement.
All I meant was, I’ve seen much broader beams IRL; IMHO (you know, the name of this forum?) Michelle Obama can afford to draw attention to her hips and still look good; and I’m tired of the media standards that result in, for instance, Kate Winslet’s thighs and butt being cropped nearly out of existence by Vanity Fair photo editors. Yes, I could have gone into that much detail originally. I didn’t feel like writing an essay at the time. Sleeps was/is taking this way too seriously, In My Humble Opinion.
*Oops, I mean, I perceive her reaction as hostile. Which may or may not have been her intent. See how that works?
ETA: ***I was never excluding anyone. I had no intention of insulting women who are naturally thin. What I was objecting to was the denigration – and it DOES HAPPEN – of women who have a wide base. It’s funny you mention Beyonce, because I have heard such remarks about her. And I don’t like that. ***
Rilch, I get what you mean about having to over explain every single thing you say when posting in IMHO. It is exhausting. It really is, to the point that it affects my frequency in posting on this board. But with that said, it really is grating as hell to see someone trot out that ol’ ‘real women have curves’ shit. It is annoying and one doesn’t have to be oversensitive to find it grating.
I believe that big mamas can be very sexy, and when they resort to saying things like 'real women have hips/tits/thighs/asses/big bellies or whatever, it looks like they are insecure about their own bodies.
And, of course, I have no idea what your weight is, nor does it matter. I mean, in general, the whole ‘real women have curves’ thing bothers me.
