Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game: Fifth Adventure - War in Goblin Gate

As usual the question begs: Left or right?

(**appleciders **smart to conserve spells, this could be a very long day before you sleep again.)

I assume which ever way the party goes it sounds like the order would roughly be:
Hraedsig Bitur Thoroncir with Cirist
Gwaelur Gil-Gandel Gilraen
Ghân Deor Mulligan
Brin Elfstan

We went left last time. Let’s go right this time.

Suits me. Onward!

The party goes 50’ to the right and finds a long chamber run 45’ wide and running 165’ north. The ceiling is 9’ high and the East wall has a series of 3’x2’ rectangular holes every 5’ and 3’ layers high. This means 99 holes. Staggered along the floor are 11 stone alters. There is a door in the middle of the west wall of the room and a passage in the west in the north corner.

Gilraen reports, “Missy is very on edge in this room. Something is wrong.”
**A low groan is heard **

Hraedsig Detects Evil

Hraedsig detects evil coming from the east wall and the middle altar.

Mulligan uses her new Freyja Finder :stuck_out_tongue:

Deor recognizes the “go right” decision as equally valid to his “go left” methodology and cheerfully agrees, trying to mask his nervousness.

His nervousness validated by the creepy holes in the wall, Deor will use his flying dragon toy to cast some light into the holes without actually having to get any closer.

Thoroncir, heeding Gilraen’s cat, has his sword drawn and at the ready.

Hraedsig if you want to take point, I will happily be your backup in exploring the evil alter.

(Hraedsig seems to be a better point person for this sort of opperation than me.)

Does anyone want to watch the east wall?

The knight-errant would be glad to.

As Hraedsig & Gwaelur advance to the altar and Thoroncir and others keep an eye on the east wall; Deor’s dragon toy lights up a hideously desiccated human figure. It is a dark brown color with black splotches and long wispy hair in a brass knot holder. It appears armed with a bronzed sword and spiked buckler.

Very fast everything becomes a riotous uproar as dozens of these figures come out of the holes in the walls. Gilraen attempts to turn them but is surprised when it only seems to cause a few to retreat to their holes and not destroy them. “They are not zombies or such ilk. They are some greater undead. Beware disease from their touch.”

Hraedsig & Gwaelur swiftly pull back to form a solid wall with Bitur and Thoroncir.
Desiccated undead human monsters

Hraedsig Gwaelur Bitur Thoroncir
Brin Gil-Gandel Gilraen Elfstan
Mulligan Deor Ghân
Bitur sends a single +2 bolt into one of the figures and swaps to melee weapons.
Brin sends two magic arrows flying and hits twice, the lead undead drops.
Gil-Gandel fires three arrows of his +3 dwarven and all three hit home and he drops another.
Gilraen begins her Song of Estë
Mulligan sees a great time to use her Chalcedony stones and hits twice and seems to have staged one for 23.
Deor prepares his fireball while calling back the dragon toy swiftly. He is seeking a dense packing of the creatures.
Ghân notes they are very dry looking and prepares his Produce Fire.

“Yes, of course. This evil must be eradicated - follow me!”

Hraedsig approaches the middle alter with sword and holy symbol at the ready, eager for battle. He bellows:

“Time to face the power of righteousness, hellspawn!”

[oog]I feel a bit like The Tick with this guy. Spoooooon![/oog]
ETA: Dammit, one minute late!

Excellent, whatever these things are we’re knocking them down already. I’m looking forward to seeing Deor get off one of his torqued-up fireballs.

Just watch where you point it.

Let’s see what a couple of silver/mithril bolts do to these guys (if they are still far enough away that this is reasonable. If not axe and shield em, keeping a defensive posture rather than an attacking one.)

Deor can also use a Web instead of a Fireball. Down here in the tunnels, it might be more effective than above ground. He’ll also use cantrips liberally if he’s got nothing better to do (other than hide behind the front line), since he’s got plenty of those. Distract might give either the Dwarves or the Men a lethal opening.

Bitur will do the same as Gwaelur, readying to take out anything that comes within melee range. At this point, maintaining the armored wall of front-liners is important.

Don’t think Gwaelur doesn’t notice that your are copying him Bitur. Not that he isn’t flattered.:stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t get too big of a head quite yet. You just beat me to the posting.:stuck_out_tongue:

Mob of desiccated undead human monsters

Hraedsig Gwaelur Bitur Thoroncir
Brin Gil-Gandel Gilraen Elfstan
Mulligan Deor Ghân
No time for bolts from Gwaelur as he was pulling back fast but melee is always fun.

As the front rank hits the shield wall Ghân drops his Produce Fire spell in a 12’ square and is please to see 7 of these creature catch fire and sustain double damage of 2-8 points each. They collectively scream in agony but the scream is strangely hollow.

Deor drops his Fireball for 8d6+8 damage and blasts 31 to ash and scalded bronze. They are dry as aged shed stored kindling.

This left the initial rush at only 7 of these strange monsters and another 7 burning. They are slower than the members of the shield wall.

Hraedsig swings Sword and Shield and hits with both. He drops one.
Gwaelur hits with his axe and shield and drops another.
Bitur hits with his battle-axe and war shield and again with his battle-axe and another drops.
Thoroncir swings the glowing Cirist cleaves through it like tissue paper for 40 points!

Brin sets an arrow through the one Mulligan injured last round. Brin’s next arrow misses.
Mulligan saves the stones and switches to the +3 Dwarven bullets. She hits twice for 26 and drops one on fire.
Gil-Gandel hits 3 more times and drops another closing on Bitur.
Gilraen turns 17 sending the 6 flaming ones into the ranks of the unlit and preventing any from striking this round.

Elfstan waits, keeping his invisibility for an emergency.

40 are destroyed and 6 are burnt seriously and several more have caught fire. 5 were turned back into their holes and another 17 are moving to the north end of the room. This is out of a maximum of 99.

The next wave is closing in of course and Deor is fresh out of fireballs but has a handy torch at least that should work better than his staff and a web spell if things look desperate.

Hraedsig hits twice again and a third time with his sword. He drops one and injures a second for 15.
Gwaelur hits only with his axe but does 22. He growls out, “Don’t turn them Gilraen, and shoot far archers.”
Bitur hits with his battle-axe, war shield and war shield again. Another falls.
Thoroncir swings the glowing Cirist twice and destroys two more with ease.

Brin fires far into the light of the flaming ones that are now burning nicely. He strikes twice and drops one that was just turned. Gil-Gandel hold fire not sure what Gwaelur is planning and not worried about those turned. Mulligan also waits.

Gwaelur is hit once for 11-1* 10 points, these creature are strong but his bronze sword is nearly worthless now at least.
Hraedsig and Bitur are missed multiple times but Thoroncir is hit for 8 points

Gwaelur waits for them to mass near the end of the round, sets forward and blasts for 6d6 damage from Rilthol his helm. It gets all within a 30’ radius, which are 28 of them in all. The two that they injured drop as the rest take 22 points of damage; 3 more drop.

50 are destroyed and 6 are burnt seriously and acting as moaning torches and several more have caught fire. 5 were turned back into their holes and another 16 are moving to the north end of the room. 23 have taken 22 points of Holy Light damage. This is out of a maximum of 99.

  • Gilraen’s Song of Estë give all of her friends a +1 Save and -1 to be hit and damage
