Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game: Fifth Adventure - War in Goblin Gate

Oh well, time to look around for the arrows and bullets from earlier.

For the sake of being thorough, Elfstan will take a look at the carvings too.

“May the Dwarves destroy these eleven altars with their axes, my lady,” Thoroncir asks Princess Gilraen, “or do you think it would pose a hazard to them if they tried? Are some magical means needed to turn these loathsome structures to mere rubble?”

She shrugs while still singing but points to ten altars shaking her head no and then walks over to the central evil altar and nods Yes while making a chopping motion and another shrug. She looks like she would really appreciate it if you all could move it along so we can at least check the west side and maybe the door.

Elfstan cannot interpret the ancient carvings.

This is very disquieting, but I suggest we make good and sure there will be no interruptions before we attempt to [del]meddle[/del] take any direct action with this fell place. I have small fear of the shades of Men, but we should not be foolish. It would be well to seek the Valar’s guidance on such a matter, and we may need time and preparation.

Right, certain dwarves smash the altar that Gilraen is suggesting we destroy.

Elfstan, you take west side, you may need some light from your swords to see what is going on.

I’ll check the door with Gil-Gandel.

Anyone not doing anything, find the arrows and bullets in here, check with Miron and make sure our rearguard is ok.

Let’s get a move on please, Gilraen can’t keep singing for too long. Pretty though it is.

For the record, these were no mere shades of men but their actual physical, very strong and very burnable bodies somehow animated to attack.

Checking the door it is sealed tight and appears to have some sort of magic trap on it that neither Mulligan nor Gil-Gandel can puzzle out. It might be time for magic. Either Knock or Stone Shape.

The rear guard is fine and all the missiles are recovered. Bolts, bullets and stones all survived. Gil-Gandel lost one +1 arrow and Brin lost one +1 arrow.

Elfstan finds the the west room appear to match the east in mirror image. Right down to the 11 altars.

Does that mean the west room also has another 99 creatures in it as well.

In which case we need to form up and take them out while Gilraen is still singing and before she collapses from exhaustion.

The Map

The west room has holes in the west wall that might have 99 more creatures.

Oh great, :frowning:

Are you ok for a few more stanzas Gilraen?

In which case, lets get to work unless, of course, you want me to attract their attention, get them to follow me and get them bottle necked in the passageway where we only have to fight a few at a time and Thoroncir doesn’t feel like breaking the shield wall.

Breaking altars, breaking undead. It’s all the same to me, let’s get cracking.

“My Dwarrowfriends,” says Thoroncir, “if you are willing, please destroy this central altar with your axes, and then let us move on before my lady becomes overtired.”

Gilraen nods to Mulligan and suddenly perks up a bit. She pulls out the Rod of Kanotir and has it light up in a brilliant 60’ radius. You hear her voice grow stronger and steadier again as she takes a few more sips of water while singing.

The two Dwarves study the Altar and realize it is clearly a job for a magic hammer and chisels, not magic axes. They call Jari over who has a magic hammer and of course Gwaelur carries a non-magical hammer and between them they have some good wedges. They each take turns swinging the hammer at the altar and making enough noise to wake the dead. They have begun to chip away at it and Gwaelur pulls out his very magical Dwarven Axe and precisely hits where cracks have begun.

Elfstan and Miron call out, we have some company from the west room. Form up fast in the north and south passages.

Gilraen heads north and motions for Hraedsig to go south. Thoroncir of course joins Gilraen.

Where does everyone else run or does someone bark out orders?

[bark]Deor, south. Ghan, north. Miron, south. Gwaelur, north. Bitur, south. Elfstan, north. Mulligan, south. Brin, south. Anyone not mentioned, wait nearby to be called. Heavy-armed troops to the front in both cases.[/bark]

heads to reinforce the north contingent.

If this is more of the same (weak mummies?), Elfstan will put the shield wall between himself and the creatures. It’s very likely they can see or detect him invisbility or no.

Bitur heads south as instructed, making his way to the front, axe and shield at the ready.

Deor calls out, I’ll web the south one, head north. The southern group races north in time after a few bolts and arrows fly down the hall. The two Dwarves go back to working on the altar.

The mummies? are pack so close that the shield wall can handle them well with the missile support and they begin to build a pile of dead mummies? Deor reports the web is holding though they are slowly tearing into it.

After 3 rounds, 17 mummies? lay dead already and the mummies retreat.
New experiment, it looks good but it takes too much time I am sad to report. Any comments pro or con, please post to the setup thread on it, I am curious. If it is really liked, maybe I can macro some of the keys. If it is a minor help, I try to keep to rougher layouts and maps.

Thoroncir keeps his shield up and hews at the mummies with grim determination. As they retreat he calls out to his comrades in the front line, "Come, let us advance and finish the task! What say you? Elendil!"

In best Gilraen impression.

“Thoroncir, you keep that shield line steady”

“Anyone got a flaming arrow or something they can get onto these mummies? With them so tightly packed and flammable, that could really wear them thin (further back would better so we don’t get singed).”

Hraedsig will happily keep hacking away, unless it looks like the shield wall might falter, in which case he will try to Turn to take some of the pressure off.
