Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game: Fifth Adventure - War in Goblin Gate

Thoroncir laughs at Bitur’s jest, and shouts, “Of course, we all knew that, but I think he’s emboldened enough now. Strike him, Bitur, strike him hard!” The knight-errant has neither seen a bigger foe than the cave troll (on land, anyway), nor smelled a fouler one, in all his days. He steadily hacks away at it, being careful not to hit Gwaelur, who is closest to him in the shield wall, as he does so.

Gil-Gandel realizes the troll is already staggering and that his hide is very tough on arrows and holds his fire long enough to see if the shield wall can finish him quick. He relays as much fast to Miron and Brin.

Gwaelur’s shield hits the troll knee very hard and the Troll starts falling forward. Thoroncir thrusts Cirist into the Troll’s stomach and slows his collapse as Bitur heaves his shield two handed into the trolls side and finally Hraedsig thrust his Bastard sword into the trolls left shoulder and then shield bashes and the trolls falls to the right in front of Thoroncir who pulls Cirist out.

The field of battle is littered with dead foes.

Ghân & Gilraen each cast a cure light on Gwaelur and he is at full!
Goblins retreated each direction and the troll has 6 magic arrows in him plus the two that missed.

Thoroncir takes off his helm, claps the Dwarf on the shoulder with a grin and says, “You struck the blow which began to bring him down to his final rest, dear Gwaelur - well done, my friend, well done! When will these hulking brutes learn not to trifle with you?”

He makes sure that Gilraen is unhurt, and then cleans and sheathes his longsword. He will go a little further west to watch for any other attack while his companions recover their magic arrows.

Thoroncir, you might want to take care of those sleeping goblins.

Elfstan, I think we should go and find out what happened to those fleeing goblins before they decide to bring some more of their large freinds to play.

Good point. Thoroncir attends to the sleeping goblins; they will trouble us no more.

“These depths belch forth much that is foul, but our teamwork gives us the advantage. Well fought, friends. Gwaelur - that was quite a blow you took. You are a stout warrior, indeed.”

Hraedsig will help Thoroncir dispatch sleeping goblins if needed. Then he’ll take a closer look at the cave troll. Never having seen one before, he wants to get a sense of its anatomy, looking for potential weak spots in case we run into any more of them.

Gwaelur will also help with the Goblins.

“Thanks Ghan and Gilraen for the cure’s. I feel fit as a fiddle now, I don’t even need to stop to catch my breath. Though I am a bit embarrased about allowing myself to get hit like that. I am usually so much better at ducking.”

Removed misplaced post.

So, what’s around the corner, where are those Goblins.

Bitur will aid with the sleeping goblins as well.

(Also, do trolls in this world regenerate? If so, we might want to apply some well placed fire on the corpse.)

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Careful where you post, my friend, you might reveal something you don’t want to…

Bitur offers his “emergency waterskin”* to Gwaelur who clearly was affected by the hit from the Troll more then anyone thought.

“You’re hallucinating, my friend. A little nip of this might do you well. I keep it around just for situations like this.”

Thoroncir and Gil-Gandel have some miruvor, too, if that would help. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks, I feel much better now. That troll must have hit me harder than I thought.

concerned Do you feel as though there are murderers and plotters in every hole and corner, my friend?

As arrows are recovered from the troll and the goblins, Mulligan and Elfstan each scout a passage. Mulligan heads west from where the Troll came. She finds the large west room is empty again. They must have fled back down the stairs.

Elfstan heads east and after he gets past the second door to the south he hears Goblins talking in the distance. He approaches even more cautiously and sees a goblin peering out keeping watch. Elfstan stops, melts into the wall and listens.

First voice, “We should have run out the gate when we had the chance. Whose stupid idea was it to investigate?”
Next voice, “He’s dead anyway. No sense moaning.”
Maybe first voice again, “We either go deep and fast or we try to make it past the wight but we do it quick. Did you hear that noise? They killed the Troll, I think it was Gus.”
Another voice, “Sounds good, let break for the doors and soon.”
As to the arrows, shooting trolls is tough on arrows, even magic arrows. Brin lost a +2, Miron a +2 Mithril and Gil-Gandel a +3 Dwarven. The rest are recovered.

So, anyone think that there might be some more cave trolls around? I enjoyed that fight.

Mulligan heads back and reports and what she found.

It looks like those Goblins have gone to ground back down the stairs. I don’t think they will venture forth for a little while, but I think they will be back at some stage.

By “the doors,” do you think they meant the doors to the outside? Even if a bunch of goblins would be short work for the Elves on guard there, maybe we ought to let them know what to expect.

The reference to “the wight” suggests it’s something other than the garden-variety wights we’ve seen so far - older, perhaps? Stronger? More powerful?

“Maybe, but they may just be referring to the only one left. After all, they refer to the troll we took out as ‘the troll’, but being that the goblin wasn’t sure which named troll we took out, I think we should be on the look out for more. And I think I know why trolls are always so violent and angry. You’d be too if you left it to goblins to come up with your name.”
