Our Dwarves know something of smithing; Thoroncir would be glad to accompany either or both.
A brief search around might turn up something good; Deor would like to ask for the assistance of someone more dexterous than himself to help check for traps in the area, though.
I guess while the others are looking around, Mulligan will be picking the lock and looking inside.
Getting ready to run from whichever Orcs are inside the room, of course, leading them back to the party.
If it is empty, lock the other doors in the room and check out the path leading up to the local chief.
“Smithy, eh? Well, I got some experience in that area, at least when it comes to armor. I’ll happily take a look around.”
Examines the smithy aided by whoever comes with him.
Today Ghân thinks he has cast three 1st level, four 2nd level, no 3rd level and four 4th level spells (and not used his spellstone).
This means he has left: four 1st level, two 2nd level, three 3rd level and no 4th level spells (plus all three spells in the spellstone).
Hraedsig will join in, keeping his eyes open for potential enemies while the others focus on potential goodies.
Gwaelur will also join in looking at the smithy. He knows a thing or two about metal work as well.
A quick search is done in the smithy. Gil-Gandel checking for traps as the Dwarves check the place out. It is not a great smithy, not even by human standards. It appears to be empty. There is a large variety of iron items around and some weapons and armor. One find that has some value is a barrel of well made rings or links like the Dwarves like to use in making chain mail. In fact they appear to be dwarven craft items. Mulligan returns before a thorough search can be completed.
Mulligan gets the door open quietly. Bypasses a string across the door way and finds an empty room but hears muffled shouting to the north and east. She sneaks over to the door to the Sub-Chiefs room and is careful around the open passageway on the east wall. She gets to the far door and checks it out. Elfstan is keeping guard from the south side of the room. This door is locked and trapped and the lock is much better quality. The trap is difficult to bypass and she will need some tall help to do it when it comes time. The Hobbits return to those searching the smithy.
Elfstan notices the Sting blazes as he enters the Smithy and gets brightest near a wooden cabinet.
Gwaelur wonders to himself why the Orcs have drwarven craft items and then notices Sting glowing. He looks at Elfstan and then the cabinet.
While walking toward the cabinet and signaling the other silently to get into position around it he say aloud,
“Well it looks like there is nothing in here of value but these rings. We should remember that they are here and take some with us when we leave.”
Gwaelur, when he finishes talking, is in position just on the far edge of point blank range of the cabinet. He has pulled out his xbow and aimed it at the cabinet door; he now indicates that one of the more stealthy amongst the group should open up the cabinet quickly and silently.*
(Gwaelur is very good at universal and descriptive sign language )
Quickly and silently complying…
Gwaelur sees a scrunched up goblin clutching a sharp knife. The goblin springs out and is on the receiving end of two cross bow bolts at point blank range. It expires quickly.
All right.
Hraedsig, a moment of your time. takes him aside
Hraedsig, while your courage is not in dispute - indeed, I have seldom heard anyone claim that any of the Men of Rohan are lacking in valour - and neither is your commitment to the common cause, I am afraid I must take issue with your indiscipline. We are a talented band but a small one and to date we have prevailed through being willing to work as a team and present a united front to our foes. It is vital that we continue in this manner and that each of us has unswerving confidence in the trustworthiness of everyone else. That means that, no matter what your private quarrel with the Orc-folk, you must be willing to set it aside while you are with us, for the sake of your duty. There will be opportunities enough to visit your wrath upon them, you need have no doubt of that, but you must await such opportunities in their proper time and not rush off precipitately at the mere whisper that our foes are at hand. I am sure I need not emphasise too much that, no matter what our good fortune on this occasion, a repetition could see us exposed to traps or ambush with possibly disastrous consequences. We need have no fear of most threats, but we must meet them on our own terms when we are all prepared to give of our best with no distractions, and not simply fly off like an arrow loosed when but at the half-draw. It is the measured stroke that best finds its mark, not the impetuous one. Do not think me unsympathetic; of all peoples, the Elves have the longest score to settle with the Orcs, since long before there were two horses stabled together in the Mark, since before there were even any Kings of Men. I only urge you to that self-control which will best serve your shield-brothers, those you have sworn your common cause with, and those who give their blood and sweat to protect all that you hold dear. I trust I make myself clear.
Do we see anything else of interest, friends?
There is some of interest, but nothing pressing and Sting has gone much dimmer. On to Mulligan’s door?
I am most interested in Mulligan’s door.
Let’s check it out! I’ll stand in the back.
Brin and Hraedsig being the tallest they assist Mulligan in opening the door and bypassing the trap. Gil-Gandel then has the honor of disarming it with much advice from the Hobbits.
The passage runs mostly north for maybe 45’ to another strong door. The lock appears to be identical to the last and is swiftly opened as the door is not trapped.
Who swings it in and enters first?
I suggest that Bitur and myself enter first with Hraedsig and Thoroncir following behind and flanking to either side,
Sort of like:
Hraedsig- Gwaelur- Bitur- Thoroncir (with Gwaelur and Bitur slightly ahead)
Then people with range weapons who can also melee
Then people with range weapons (or magic) who can’t.
Sound like a plan?
So the party uses normal formation but single file to build it. Sting is shining brightly so expect trouble. Elfstan wills it off after checking. The undead detectors are dim.
Gwaelur goes in war shield and axe ready and sees a small ballista and 4 goblins with crossbows and 4 well armed and armored large goblins backed by a huge goblin.
The Ballista hits Gwaelur in the shield and of the 4 bolts one hits him for 5 points and he makes his poison saving throw. The crossbowers drop back and the 4 bodyguards step up. Gwaelur move fast but gives time for Bitur and the others to flank him. (Hraedsig- Gwaelur- Bitur- Thoroncir ) Shield forward they chop and slice at the large bodyguards. The bodyguards are wearing well made banded and using quality long swords and shields. They appear to be skilled.
Gwaelur takes a critical hit for 20 point putting him down for 25 points. The other 3 miss.
Hraedsig misses with his sword but hits with his shield for 14.
Gwaelur critically hits with Axe cleaving off the goblins right leg high in the thigh. His shield finished off the one on Hraedsig.
Bitur hits only with his axe and does 13.
Thoroncir strikes with Cirist and does 17.
Brin shoots and kills the two goblins on the ballista.
Gil-Gandel hits the one on Bitur twice and finishes him off.
Elfstan flanks to the left heading for the crossbow using goblin beyond Hraedsig when he sees the large one drop. Mulligan heads to the right to get a clear shot and puts a bullet into the crossbower beyond Thoroncir.
Ghân fires two blow darts at the crossbowers beyond the Dwarves and paralyzes one.
Deor and Gilraen watch for rear ambush.
This leaves one body guard on Thoroncir, the sub-chief and a crossbower.
ARGGG!
Gwaelur is going to drop back a little if he can and try to get close to someone with healing powers. He will get his xbow ready for ranged attacks until he can get a little healing.
To melee weapons, and in good order, charge!
