Agreed. Let’s block the already-opened door with stuff taken from blocked one, and open the latter. Thoroncir is not one to run away from a fight.
Discresion is the better part of valour, Thoroncir. The point is not to bravely stand here and get yourself, us and more importantly Gilraen killed. Also, there is not much left of this door to block.
Personally, I would suggest a hasty exit, leaving whatever is hacking through the door alone.
We can deal with it better, when we are not bottlenecked in a small room with one way out being through a locked door and hordes of goblins and the other way currently clear for a short time until the goblins realise.
I think that after a moments reflection I agree with Mulligan. There is no way to turn our current position into an advantage. A hasty exit might be best.
Lead us out, then. Bitur, rearguard with me. A shame to have to leave just when Deor was getting the hang of that ballista, though.
Me?
Ok then, me and Mulligan will take point. We should probably have at least one other heavy hitter up front in case we run into trouble.
Elfstan, “But the strongbox, who will carry it?”
Is this the marching/jogging order? Where is the party headed? Out or back to get the south door’s goblins and friends?
Gwaelur Mulligan
Thoroncir Elfstan
Hraedsig
Gilraen
Deor Ghân
Brin
Gil-Gandel
Bitur
I need to take a look at the map again to get an idea of where I think we are going, but I suspect that Mulligan had a plan, so I would like to at least wait for him to chime in before we set a where (unless someone else has a good idea of where). As for the how, I would swap either Thoroncir or Hraedsig with Brin so we have a stronger rear guard.
Ghân will do a quick Cure Light Wounds on Gwaelur, then try to carry the strongbox (though he’s not very strong).
He suggests the party go back out, since the inhabitants are likely to search their entire complex for us now.
When we return tomorrow (with full spells), we have excellent Scouts to lead us back in.
General plan of ordered withdrawal.
Back down the stairs, check the crossroads for ambush and then straight on.
At the end of the passageway turn left, back for the stairs, bring careful of the passageway to the right which leads to the first rooms we checked out and keeping an eye behind us of course.
The other stairs are guarded and trapped by Miron.
Actually, at the crossroads, Mulligan will peel off and head right down to the room (28) to see what forces assail from the south door, while the party moves behind her and to give warning if we get chased. Once the party has passed, move back in behind.
Elfstan can take over up front with Gwaelur and check for ambush at the T-junction. Once at the top of the stairs set up an ambush site in the room.
Rule #1 of a thief: Know when to run and how to get there.
Thoroncir scowls. He’d rather stay and fight. But if the Elf-captain has decided otherwise, off we go then.
How heavy is the strongbox? Which, if any, of our party could carry it single-handed? Thoroncir will carry it, if he’s able, and just drop it if he needs to fight along the way.
Ghân finds the box too heavy so Thoroncir takes it and swaps positions with Hraedsig. The party heads out to return upstairs. Ghân heals Gwaelur another 6 so he is down only 5. Gilraen heals Hraedsig to his full 42.
Mulligan peels off at the intersection to return to room 24 to check on the goblins. The party heads for the main passage out. Mulligan sees that 5 goblins are in the hallway between 24 and 42.
Five goblins? Hah! Let’s kill 'em.
Agreed, if it can be done without stirring up a hornets’ nest. Can you give us any more information, Mulligan?
I didn’t realise Thoroncir was turning into Hraedsig. So much for showing mercy. So much for showing some tactical awareness either. There was only supposed to be one troll too. Glad Gil-Gandel has his thinking cap on. I wonder where the goblin shaman is too. Can’t wait to open that stronbox either. mutter, mutter.
I’ll check the other doors in to the room to make sure they don’t have more goblins, orcs or trolls behind them waiting to dead end us next to our own barricade.
Oh, and lets see what those goblins are carrying as well in terms of armour and weapons.
Every door including the secret door is open. Mulligan sees and hears no goblins nearby. The 5 goblins are larger in size and apparently warriors. They have axes and shields and are wearing banded armor.
I thought Thoroncir was always a bit blood thirsty, he is basically a Marine. Hraedsig is just more so.
Report back to the rest of the group detailing what was spotted.
Gil-Gandel can assign a few of the group to handle them while I keep an eye out in the room for any re-inforcements.
If Sir Thoroncir wants to become Lord Thoroncir, he is going to need to get a grip on that impetuousness
The knight-errant is, as I see it, always aggressive but hardly ever rash. When foes are at hand, his first instinct is always to attack, but he is no berserker. He has every intention of living to a ripe old age and no desire to throw his life away, unless there were no other way to save the one he loves.
Five goblins would not unduly endanger the party and would be that many fewer to slay on the morrow.
“Gil-Gandel just agreed with Thoroncir, so I’m not sure why he has his ‘thinking cap’ on and the knight doesn’t. I may have been a little…hasty earlier, but I think our job here is to rid this area of evil creatures, not to hunt treasure. The strongbox can wait until we’ve done our duty. Now, there are some goblins trying to kill us, so this paladin’s tactical awareness tells him we should return the favor…”
Just for note: Mulligan was muttering under her breath, not in earshot of the party. Gil-Gandel probably heard but unlikely anybody else. Sorry. if it was not clear.
Right! So who is going up the passage to fight the Goblins and where will the rest be?
