Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game: Fifth Adventure - War in Goblin Gate

Sir Thoroncir will set the strongbox down (if somebody else will keep an eye on it for the moment), draw his sword and go forth.

Gwaelur once again feels the need to cover for his impulsive traveling companions. He is at point after all. He pulls out his xbow for a first strike and to better cover Thoroncir but as always has his axe handy for when things need to get close.

He cautions that the rear guard of the party should stay and continue to do just that, guard the rear. He will try to make this quick.

As long as it’s safe, Ghân will watch the strongbox.

As mentioned previously, Mulligan will keep watch in the room (24) and alert if anything untoward starts appearing, while they are dealing with the goblins.

So Thoroncir, Gwaelur and Hraedsig go after the goblins. Gwaelur has his crossbow loaded and ready. Mulligan is keeping watch in room 24. The rest wait just south of intersection, nearing the main passage back to the stairs up. Elfstan is hiding in shadows in the intersection to relay to Mulligan.

They go fairly quiet and are helped by the poor lighting and destruction of the door with axes. They see the 5 large goblins with axes and shields wearing banded armor.

Gwaelur fires his bolts and kills the rear goblin. Thoroncir and Hraedsig charge in and catch the goblins slightly off guard. Thoroncir runs one through and Hraedsig misses with his sword but bashes him with his war shield and puts him down. The last two goblins swing back with their axes and both miss.

Thoroncir and Hraedsig press forward, Thoroncir misses with his first stroke and the goblin miss. Hraedsig hits with sword and shield and his foe dies. Gwaelur finishes off the three downed goblins behind the two men. Thoroncir gets through the goblin’s guard and injures him severely. Hraedsig finishes him off. The 5 goblins are dead.
Elfstan sees another group of goblins coming up swiftly from the east. They have torches and it appears to be at least a dozen.

Mulligan hears something from the secret door to the west.

Crap, ok so fall back to the party and regroup. Assuming that I have found out what Elfstan and Mulligan know.

Believe me, once I knew you would have too.

Back to the party and lets get up those stairs, following the path I suggested earlier. I reckon on these goblins being from bunk areas on the lower levels.

Thoroncir will rejoin the main group, pick the strongbox back up and lug it along, but be ready to drop it and draw his sword if needed.

The ones coming from the east will need to be dealt with fast. They’ll reach the intersection before the 3 fighters could.

Mulligan will be lagging behind the 3 fighters to give advance warning of what is coming through secret door. It’s probably more goblins and hopefully nothing bigger.

Sling with Dwarvern +3’s at the ready.

If those Goblins look low-level enough for a Sleep to handle them, Deor has that at the ready. We need to beat a speedy retreat here.

I approve. We are supposed to be disengaging while we can still do so in fair shape. Getting into “just one more” fight is too often a recipe for disaster.

Deor steps out and casts his sleep spell. All 11 of the 12 go down. The last one looks shocked. Elfstan is closing on him rapidly and Gil-Gandel tries to fire 3 shots off down the low hall. He hits once and the goblin runs but soon enough Elfstan overtakes him and stabs him in the back with Sting.

Gwaelur and Hraedsig can quickly mop up the 11 sleepers with Elfstan. Thoroncir is called over to pick up the strongbox.

Mulligan just sees the first goblin peak into room 24.

Nice Sleep spell, Deor!

Thoroncir picks up the strongbox and moves off with the party.

Feeling a little nervous now that he’s got only one spell left, Deor checks over his shoulder and presses on.

Ghân reassures Deor that casting Sleep was the right thing to do.
The party is now headed for a safe overnight camp, after which the casters can reload and return to pummel the opposition tomorrow.
If the Goblin outside room 24 is still visible (and there’s time), Ghân sends a Summon Insects at him (and if possible will then use it to cover our retreat).

Save the spell for the moment Ghân, two rapid sling shots in the general direction of his head should do the trick.

Everyone else keep moving while I keep them on their toes. You will soon hear if I need help as I overtake you up the stairs.

But most of all, sort out a defensible position upstairs, we are probably going to need it, unless Ghân wants to stone shape the stairs closed. I know how much you want to use that spell.

Ghân has got another Summon Insects, so will still cast the spell. Sling bullets are fine  , but there may well be more than one goblin.

Stone Shape is also ready if required.

Oh, sorry. Scratch my response then, obviously.
As to the battle, Hraedsig is obviously retreating with the party, but since Thoroncir is busy with the strongbox, he’ll be last in line with sword drawn in case any goblins catch up.

The party retreats in order. Ghân leaves a Summon Insects behind to block pursuit and the party heads out. They make it to the main hallway between the stairs and see one goblin between them and the room to the stairs. He shrieks and is yelling for help and ducking away fast. He is roughly 90’ away.
