Elfstan thinks Ghân should test it first. I’m not sure I can survive what Hraedsig took.
I don’t suppose the party’s knowledge of electricity is advanced enough to know that we shouldn’t touch the door if we’re grounded… or maybe magical Middle-earth electricity doesn’t follow the same rules that Dr. Franklin researched.
Ghân doesn’t know about grounding, but he does know about his Protection from Electricity.
Provided the fighters are in position and the scouts give the go-ahead, he will attempt to ‘disarm’ the door.
Bitur tells the shield wall to form up behind Ghan and be ready for anything to come out.
He also asks Hraesdig how far of a safe berth from the trapped door he thinks we should be in case the electricity has an area of effect.
There can be no forming of a shield wall as the passage is far too small. It is not only single file but no passing of Ghân except for maybe the Hobbits or thinner unarmored humans like Deor, Brin or Gilraen.
Deor who was behind Hraedsig can tell you just don’t be touching Ghân.
Um, how does Ghân reach safety if the shield wall is formed behind him?
Run towards the center of the wall. We will let you in and then close back up.
ETA: I should read What Exit’s posts before responding to Ghan. :smack:
I don’t have a new reply yet.
The rest of us need to hang back, then, and give Ghân room to run back if he has to. I don’t mind being the next behind him - I am lightly built and completely unarmoured though far from unprotected.
Thoroncir, wearing armor, will keep a safe distance with Gilraen behind him.
Mulligan will be close behind Ghan to lend support.
Not too close, of course.
I suggest everyone else backs out into the main room.
Ghân ponders if the door has a poison trap as well (he really is a ‘goblet half-empty’ Wose!), then touches the door.
He tries to give Mulligan a clear view, so the mechanism can be spotted.
Giving Mulligan a chance to study the door a bit without touching it, she sees nothing amiss. Ghân takes the handle to open it, it discharges for 15 points of electrical shock (he made his save) but finds the door is locked.
I think this one is going to need Deor to open it.
Somehow I don’t relish trying to pick a lock while getting an electric shock, unless Ghan wished to continue holding the door for me.
“Ye gods, I hope there is something worthwhile behind this door!”
Deor is indeed prepared to Knock this door as long as Ghan can keep it discharged.
Ok first off, Ghan keep holding the door and see if it remains discharged.
If I can unlock it so much the better.
If I get a shock from it, Deor will have to use his Knock spell instead.
Ghân’s Protection from Lightning is still going strong, but he votes for using Deor’s Knock spell:
- it works at a distance, so the Fighters can be ready at the front when the door is opened
- we may as well use the spell and these circumstances are about perfect
Quite right. We have no idea how long this trap is prepared to keep running for, and it may be well able to shock however many people are going to touch it at once, meaning that Ghân cannot shield Mulligan in the suggested fashion. Bring someone armour-plated to the front, then.
The knight-errant steps forward and braces himself.
Once again the problem of the tight passage. You can put someone small in front of Deor and the Hobbits or Ghân can get past him in the tight passage but with Thoroncir in front, Deor will find the door tough to knock. Ghân may still need to open the door if it does not pop open.
Elfstan is willing to crouch in front with his swords at the ready.
