Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game: Fifth Adventure - War in Goblin Gate

Works for me.

Man, I hate being in these tiny passages. I’ll open the door if I can.

While Ghân has considerable respect for Gwaelur’s bravery (and his Axe!), we are currently investigating 5 areas!
Surely we don’t want to risk fighting on any more fronts?

And we’re not ‘wasting time’. Remember there are Trolls and Wraiths down here.

If cries of help come from two (or more) directions, what is the party’s plan?

Mulligan and Miron return to the party with details of what they have found.

Currently, Deor and Hraedsig are leading a party of dwarves through the secret door.

Bitur, Gwaelur , Elfstan and a few others would be going down the steps to look at the passageway there.

That is it as far as I can see.

Gil-Gandel is making sweet music to our reinforcements and Rudan preferred not to go past the troll chamber.

So, it’s not as bad as it looks.

As Elfstan, Bitur, Ghân, Gwaelur, Mulligan and others discuss more scouting and what Mulligan found so far, the party hears Hraedsig scream in pain.

On opening the door he took 30 points of electrical damage and was knock back on his butt. The Dwarves back out quickly so Deor and Hraedsig may retreat.

Gwaelur hears the scream of Hraedsig and all notions of other exploration leave his mind, he rushes off in the direction of the screams.

Sir Thoroncir will order the seniormost Dwarf to take command and to hold his position at all costs, and then will quickly lead Princess Gilraen to Hraedsig’s aid.

If I’m still passing horn calls or waiting to resume, I’ll trust Thoroncir and the others to exercise their own discretion.

Ghân will suggest to his own group that they retreat in good order to investigate the screaming.

He feels a little guilty he didn’t insist that the party stick to tried and trusted methods:

  • scouts subtly check ahead for enemies and traps, one direction at a time
  • they report back
  • the party organises overwhelming force, with appropriate battle order (e.g. clerics v undead)

Hraedsig crawls back to the main room and drops to the floor, his teeth still chattering from the shock. “I’d rather face a troll again…”

Gilraen has nothing herbal for this damage but Glee does and can restore you 3 points.
Gilraen does a curelight for 19! and Hraedsig is only down 8. Has Hraedsig had Goodberries today?

What’s next?

The knight-errant agrees with Ghan. Let’s form up again, disable the trap that shocked Hraedsig, and after scouting by our most estimable Hobbits, proceed through the door as a group.

Hraedsig has had no Goodberries yet today, so he will gladly take them if they are available. (Though he will eat only 7, saving one for later, just in case :))

“Many thanks, Ghân and Gilraen, for your ministrations. And, um, if we could keep this little incident quiet, I would appreciate it. I don’t relish seeing the looks on my countrymen’s faces if they find out I was nearly killed by a…door.” :o

Bitur will offer his “special waterskin” to Hraesdig.

“Here, have a nip of this lad. It refreshes the parts even Miruvor can’t reach.”

Say by Morgul-spells, then - which only your innate hardiness and the Valar’s grace enabled you to survive. There is nothing but credit to you in this, brave Knight.

Ghân, sometimes we may find it necessary to cut corners in order to cover all the ground we need to. We are strong and resourceful; if foresight fails us from time to time, the practice at thinking on our feet will do us good.

“Much obliged, my friend. Much obliged.”

Ghân “Please eat all 8 - I have plenty left. It would be dreadful if you fell in combat with an unused cure.”

Ghân is very happy to follow Gil-Gandel.
His upbringing as a Wose has made him a little suspicious and pessimistic, since his people were persecuted before the two Kings (Theoden and Aragorn) brought freedom and safety.

He adds that he has unsurpassable protection against electrical attacks, in case the door is still active…

So what is next?

So Elfstan, do you want to look at this door or shall I.

Perhaps we should get Ghan to have a look as well. Just to take care of any more electrical surprises it may contain.
