Make it so. I’ll agree on a couple of horn-calls for emergencies just so we don’t have to have a code talker stationed with me.
Deor will back Gil-Gandel’s decisions, as usual.
Mulligan will lead the way with Elfstan, avoiding the traps of course.
The party will head up the passage to the northwest. Meanwhile a group of Dwarven and Hobbits will be going through the rest of the crates and making an inventory. Another pair of smaller groups will be hauling stuff from the two trolls’ rooms to the main chamber. They are also trapping and barricading the northeast and southeast passages.
The northwest passage requires single file. Mulligan and Elfstan will be up front. They are the only two that can go side by side. I suspect you will surely want a Dwarf next checking Dwarven things and the other in the rear, but what will the rest of the order be?
Our earlier single-file marching order, from posts 84-85:
*Mulligan
Elfstan
Gwaelur
Hraedsig
Bitur
Thoroncir
Gilraen
Deor
Ghân
Brin
Gil-Gandel*
Shall we have Miron follow Gilraen, or trail Brin, maybe? Any other changes?
I see nothing wrong with our previous order.
I say we put Mirion behind Brin to help beef up our rear guard a bit.
The order looks good to me, as long as I don’t have to open any doors
The passage runs a good distance dropping slighty as it goes. At about 140’ Bitur notices peepholes hidden in the ceiling. Now alert to it, they are found roughly every 20’.
Hraedsig will Detect Evil to try to determine if anything nasty is lying in wait up there.
Our Scouts don’t think the peepholes are traps, do they?
I was thinking of murder holes myself. Do we have any reasonable means of plugging them from underneath? We could work our way along one by one and should be hard to spot if we are careful.
I was thinking murder holes as well, but I’m a bit small to try and plug them.
Perhaps Elfstan and I should head to the end of the tunnel while the rest of the paryt waits here in front of the holes.
Bitur thinks the peepholes would be a bit small to be effective murder holes. Especially being 20’ apart. Anything dropped or poured down there could be easily avoided, not to mention that it would by necessity be small and any liquid would flow slowly.
However, being able to spy upon those wishing you ill and knowing where they are going is a huge tactical advantage in of itself.
I don’t think our foes can be in any doubt as to where we are by now. If those are murder holes, would they be part of another complete tunnel directly above the passageway where our party is, or are they more likely just portals on the floors of a bunch of small, separate chambers? Perhaps our rock-savvy Dwarves can smash into one from below… or we could all just quickly pass beneath, depending on what Hraedsig’s Detect Evil finds.
No evil is detected but as a reminder, Detect Evil detects only strong evil and not just evils like run of the mill Goblins.
The Dwarves can say with a surety that the holes are not murder holes and surprisingly there have been no ceiling drops or trap doors so far. They and the Elves will now be extra alert to such traps. The Dwarves are a little short to break out the ceiling though one of the taller and stronger men could be directed in using Bitur’s always handy prybar.
Ghân has Stone Shape, which could make an instant hole in the ceiling (or a set of steps in the wall).
Ghân would probably need to be lifted up by a pair of others and kept stable enough to successfully cast the spell. He doesn’t weigh much so one of the strong guys might be willing to be a step stool for this job.
While they are playing around with the holes, Mulligan is going to wander off down the corridor to see what is there and then report back.
Thanks, Mulligan.
Thoroncir sheathes his sword, kneels and cups his hands. “Care for a lift, my Wose friend?”
