Ghân is ready to do exactly as Glorfindel requests:
“We must ally together to defeat this Evil.”
(Ghân mutters to Gil-Gandel that if it goes wrong, he’d like a short verse in his memory from the Bard.)
Ghân is ready to do exactly as Glorfindel requests:
“We must ally together to defeat this Evil.”
(Ghân mutters to Gil-Gandel that if it goes wrong, he’d like a short verse in his memory from the Bard.)
Ghân casts his Dispel Magic at 12th level. He fails and feels he failed by a good amount. This ancient spell is still powerful.
Gilraen will join him and they will try casting together. They cast both spells at the same time at 12th and 9th respectively. But Gilraen is using her spell to strengthen Ghân’s. She has good success and boost his strength by about 5 levels. (actually +9% chance) Ghân’s Dispel Magic fails again.
Glorfindel, “This is not going to work is it?”
Ghân knows that working with Gilraen they have a chance. It is not a great chance but it should work eventually. They could try it at least one more time without burning too many spell points. He also knows Radagast might be able to do something about this if he could somehow be persuaded to help.
Gilraen, “I know the leader of my order would have little chance to do better than Ghân. I wonder if Elrohir or even Celeborn might know someway to disable or bypass this.”
Bitur knows that given enough time, his Dwarves can just dig out the area and let the slab fall out of the way.
“It’s up to you guys what you want to do. If you want to try more with the magic thing, be my guest, but unless we are in a particular hurry, it might be better to take a more mundane approach and let us dwarves dig around the slab. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure to give the runes a wide berth so as not to trigger them accidentally.”
Ghân suggests that he (and Gilraen) don’t try any more today. If they do happen to succeed, they will be low on spells to face anything that comes out.
EIther try the combined spell twice again tomorrow, or let the Dwarves do it.
Is Glorfindel still injured?
Let the dwarves dig it out and just bypass it.
Although I hope there is nothing on the far side to prevent us doing it though.
I’m gonna back out of this hole, so as to give the dwarves some room to do their work. Unless we’d prefer to simply let Ghan Stone Shape straight around it?
Ghân has no room to work a stone shape this time and the Dwarves cannot blast.
Gilraen is willing to try one more Dispel.
By all means, she might as well try again. Thoroncir is at the ready, if needed.
Can the dwarves tunnel round it, if not then Dispel Magic is about the only thing we can do.
Ghân will of course co-operate (this is his last Dispel Magic of the day).
The stone will take a lot of time to remove. Meanwhile there seems to be some remaining evil about that could harass them while they are chopping.
Ghân and Gilraen should give it one more try and Glorfindel will be ready to try and destroy the Runes.
They lower the three down. Glorfindel closest and squeeze tight to the east wall. Ghân and Gilraen cast Dispel Magics again. Gilraen has about the same effect as last time. Ghân exclaims, “That worked!”
The Dwarves haul the pair up and Glorfindel attacks the Runes with hammer and chisel. He calls up, “I think it is working, how much time do I have?”
The pair of spellcasters have no idea.
Glorfindel redoubles his speed. Chips of stone are flying. After about 5 minutes he proclaims, “The Runes are destroyed, I think we did it. I guess it is time for another Detect Magic.”
Deor comes down and does the honors, “The Symbol is broken but there is still some magic in the door, I think it is the preservation spell.” He Knocks the slab or door and it creeks open with the groan of thousands of years. Beyond is a Wraith of untold dread. Its very form fills Deor with a quaking horror and he freezes up, his knees go weak, his world is ending …
Glorfindel gives a war cry of “Elbereth Gilthoniel” and runs the hideous Wraith through as he calls for the Dwarves, “Haul the lad up and make it fast!”
Up goes Deor and in a very short time the Wraith tries to turn and run but Glorfindel blazes with the Light of Valinor of one hollowed by Elbereth herself and he pursues the wraith and knocks it done and destroys it.
He calls up, “The Wraith is gone but we have another passage. Who will join me?”
Oh good, 2 down, 3 to go. Are we are going to find a Wraith of Dread behind each door.
I’ll be down shortly. I can probably find the next Symbol. Hopefully before I can put my foot on it.
Hraedsig, finally able to be useful and fortified by his meditations, replies calmly:
“I am ready.”
Ghân (with just the slightest hint of smugness over his Dispel Magic) offers to Detect Magic when needed.
If there’s room, Thoroncir will go down to help.
Gilraen will join in as Rüdan looks nervous, much like he is hoping some other Dwarves will volunteer.
Mulligan will scout but Glorfindel will stay close. He would like Hraedsig and a sharp Dwarf as 3 and 4 for Detection of Evil and Detection of Stonework. After that he is not too worried about where the rest fall in.
If we do meet any more Wraiths of Dread, I’m sure Glorfindel will be equal to the challenge. Of course I will be there in case everything goes sour.
I will go as well. I don’t know how well I can track Wraiths, but perhaps I can provide another pair of sharp eyes.
When Mulligan gets to the bottom, she shines a lantern down the passageway to see what is there.
Bitur will join Glorfindel as well.
