Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game: Fifth Adventure - War in Goblin Gate

Thank you for that, but I had this sudden urge to be as far as here from possible as quickly as possible. I dropped my dagger and lantern down there as well. :frowning:

Let me know when you have dealt with that Symbol of Fear and I’ll continue where I stopped. You should see where the outline is cleared.

Sir Thoroncir is glad he could be of some comfort to Mulligan. He’s never hugged a Hobbit before!

He certainly acknowledges Glorfindel’s much greater power and majesty, but is willing to go down into the hole if necessary.

Don’t worry Gilraen, you can have him back. He’s a bit big for me.

Glorfindel, “Thank you, Sir Thoroncir. That is most brave. But I do feel this symbol at least will have little effect on me.”

He loops the rope into a small seat and addresses the Dwarves. “Please just be ready to pull me back up fast if I am overestimating my abilities. Drop and extra line to haul up the lantern and knife.”

Down he goes, “I’m safe.” He checks the floor and calls up, “Take up Mulligan’s items please. Here goes…” Brrzapp, Whoooo, Brakgur Hrognan Fwammin.

A red glow is seen from below answered by a clear white light that wins.

Glorfindel calls up, “The symbol has little effect on me and I have cleared of the door. I do not know how to open it or read the runes I am afraid. We need some other plan. Does anyone have a really good pry bar they could lower down or some other ideas?”

"One dwarven lockpick coming up…er…down.

“Would you like a dwarf or two on the side?”

“No offense Bitur, but I don’t know if even your will is up to this. I feel the fear close to that of a Balrog. This dark spell was surely placed by a mighty one, I can well believe it is one more ill-gift of Annatar known better as Sauron.”

He takes the prybar and works at the stone for about 10 minutes. He calls up, “I am going to try something different. I need a chisel, spikes and a good hammer.”

After 10 more minutes and what might be an Elvish curse, “This is not working, the spells must also be protecting the stone and there is not enough room to work around the door slab. I will try to chisel out the Runes.”

A few seconds later, Bzaappp. Glorfindel flies back against the other wall with a large groan.

Bitur calls down, “How are you Elf?”

Glorfindel, “That was apparently foolish, I will need some help down here. Perhaps the spellcasters can devise a way to help. Perhaps you can bring me up for now.”

Glorfindel is much less clean and his hair not so shiny and bright at the moment. He looks like he took a bit of a shock but not an electrical shock. He is down 57 hit points. “I don’t need much healing, but I do need to be more cautious. I should have known better.”

Sir Thoroncir is amazed and a bit awestruck that even Glorfindel - Glorfindel, who in glory returned from the Halls of Mandos! - was stymied by the stone. He now knows he would almost surely have died had he tried what the great Elf-prince just did. It is a sobering thought.

“Since this appears to be the last great challenge facing us here in Goblin Gate,” the knight-errant asks, “could our mages all acquire the same kind of spell or spells by dawn tomorrow, and subject the stone to a sustained, concerted magical attack?”

Can I ask something, if you cover the runes back up do they stop working?

Will that give our casters enough time to come down and decipher what is on the door or how to open it?

Glorfindel, “I’m afraid I got a bit hasty there. But the runes are safe until touched, even if touched by a knife or such. Apparently trying to chisel them off though causes some sort of much worse response. I think the spellcasters are safe to work on them if they don’t touch them.”

In which case, Deor, Ghan, Gilraen, it’s time to take a look. One at a time, I think, as there is not much space there.

I’ll come down as well to provide some light and support, seeing as I should be small enough not to get in the way.

My Lord Glorfindel, I suggest you come back up.

Glorfindel is already up.

Ghân can offer Glorfindel 8 Goodberries, some **Herbal Cures **and a couple of Cure Light Wounds.

He would cast Cure Serious Wounds, but presumably Dispel Magic will be more useful.

Ghân offers to cast Dispel Magic by himself, or with Gilraen if she wants.

Alright, then. Deor will grudgingly allow himself to be lowered into the pit. Once there, he’ll use another Comprehend Languages if the first one has worn off already and see if we can’t learn a little about this place.

"It sounds like Mulligan triggered a Symbol of Fear. It’s possible that the caster used several other “Symbol” type enchantments; if so, we should be quite careful. I think we can handle Symbols of Sleep, Stunning, or Hopelessness, but I really don’t want to see a Symbol of Discord, Insanity, or Death triggered.

Thoroncir concurs. He’ll help lower Deor, if the Dwarven hoist crew wishes.

Hraedsig is simultaneously eager to destroy what is obviously a source of great evil, but cowed by the sheer power they have encountered. This is a long way from fighting orcs on the plains of Rohan! Since he doubts he can be much help with the runes, he will take a few minutes to pray to Eonwe for courage.

Let me down first, and I’ll help Deor get down safely at the bottom and point out what requires deciphering.

Time to face my fears again.

Mulligan with trepidation returns to the pit. Deor follows her down. He casts Comprehend Languages but the Runes say little this time. Most of them are magical in nature and the little he can decipher indicates, “Go No Further, Doom Is Certain”.

Glorfindel, “I think it is time to try a dispel and another attempt at breaking the Runes. Ghân, would you be willing to do your magic with me down there and then they pull you up swiftly as I attack the Runes? Would that work?”

Why is it always Certain Doom. :frowning:

Oh well, time to let others take over.

I would much prefer it to Uncertain Doom. We Hobbits like things orderly, you know.

One of these days we’ll find a Glyph of Pretty Much Instant Death.
