I guess we will find out what the 5 are in due course then, but they are probably not pretty. What are the odds they are all magical or can we expect something more mechanical later on?
Drat, I forgot to ask Elfstan if I could borrow his thieves tools, they may have come in useful.
Let’s get cracking then, there’s no time like the present.
While the others were discussing how to supress the various enchantments, Bitur was in conversation with Rüdan about the makeup of the slab and its surroundings. After he’s finished, he addresses the party:
“What if instead of trying to suppress or otherwise overcome the magic, we bypass it entirely. Using Ghân’s stone shape and the extensive knowledge we dwarves know on how to deal with stone, it’s quite possible we can set a large enough amount of black powder explosive to blow the slab completely loose. That way, no one has to be in the room when the seals are broken and their enchatments loosed.”
Rüdan replies, “Levers and rollers and block and tackle and what ever it takes to avoid touching the thing. Call it Dwarven Magic.” He says with a toothy smile.
Agreed. (Although being this far underground and messing with explosives is definitely outside of Hraedsig’s comfort zone. But he has great trust in his new Dwarven companions.)
Glorfindel will stand guard while Ghân and the Dwarves work. The powder team is Hvatar, Afi, Karfi & Óttarr. They supervise Ghân in removing stone in various areas and shaping stone cones and such out of the excess. As soon as Ghân is done with his spell, he is sent from the room. Everyone is out of the room except Glorfindel, Hvatar and Afi.
The charges are set and everyone but Afi leaves. He lights the short fuse and runs. 37 seconds later there is a loud boom, flying dust and stones and when the dust clears Glorfindel charges a single Wraith-like figure. Most of the party sees Glorfindel blaze and the Wraith-like figure flinch and run. Glorfindel overtakes it and runs it through with his Long Sword from Gondolin. He hacks it and chops it 4 more times in a short period of time and it collapses and dissipates.
He calls, “Hraedsig, I could use your help, is there any more Evil? I am still detecting undead and goblins about about. It is time to see what is next.”
Hraedsig enters and detect no evil within 10’ except for the slab itself that has moved 6" to the east leaving a nice gap.
The party comes back in and the Dwarves begin the rigging. They are cautious and spend 30 minutes moving the slab to the far side of the room. The slab is 10" thick and solid stone.
Beneath is a shaft that drops down 45’. The shaft is 3’x6’ and dark and moldy and a bit moist looking.
Well, if our Scout is willing to take a look at that, he had better have a safety line. Or I could go myself - climbing may be where I excel over even our doughty burrahobbit.
That kind of shaft is going to be great fun to try and climb up or down. :dubious:
Gil-Gandel, I’ve got a pair of gloves that may disagree with you about the climbing part though, but I’ll still take a rope around my waist before I go down there though. Unless Rorimac would like the honour of going first?
Gilraen to Mulligan before she begins her descent, “Keep Kkosal’s Bane handy, it may help. Good luck.”
The Dwarves set up a small roller they use for rigging and lower Mulligan very gently. The sides are mostly soft rock and moist mold and slime. The Dwarves have lowered a second lantern from the other side already. Mulligan reaches the bottom and finds nothing visually.
I hope someone up there has neutralise poison handy, I don’t like the look of these molds down here. It’s seems fairly safe, so if someone wants to prepare to join me. Probably Rorimac or Gil-Gandel, otherwise it could get a bit cosy down here.
Given the state of this pit, I’m expecting puffs of spores from deadly mushrooms, evil tiny poisonous spiders and the foul embrace of the undead matched only by my slightly overactive imagination.
I will use one of the throwing knives, firstly to tap the walls for any hollow sounds and then to carefully probe and clear the walls keeping the torch at a distance.
You tap around and no spores get you but you do find a hidden by slime seam in the 3’ wide north wall. It appears to be a rectangular seam nearly 3’ wide and having the carefully lift you back up, about 6’ tall. As you clear some of the slime away though, a great fear comes over you and you begin shrieking, “Pull me up, pull me up!”
The Dwarves do so swiftly.
Your fear appears to be irrational. Gilraen sings the Song of Estë while Thoroncir holds you. She then gives you a drink of Miruvor. The Fear recedes to the point where you can explain that you exposed Runes that began to glow.
They notice you dropped both the throwing knife and lantern.
Glorfindel, “I am willing to go down. I have no fear of Sauron’s dark sorceries for long ago. This sound like a second symbol he left.”
