As long as you don’t mind Deor swapping Identify for Sleep, sure!
I don’t think you can Sleep Undead, it’s a good exchange.
The chamber grows darker somehow when Deor casts his Identify. He finds it is a spell of several parts. It includes Preservation, Protection vs. Good and a Symbol of Pain if broken or opened. There is no command to open it, it was never meant to be opened.
Ouch. That is a baleful enchantment and a powerful one.
This could be… unpleasant. Thoroncir narrows his eyes and tightens his grip on his longsword.
Glorfindel requests that Hraedsig detects for evil. Hraedsig finds the glowing Runes now radiate evil.
Gilraen suggests, “I can cast a dispel magic on it that could at least disrupt the magic on it. I dispel at 9th level thanks to the Magic Ring my uncle gave me.”
Come one everyone, cheer up. It is going to be difficult but that’s no reason to stop now. This is about more than just finding some old bits and pieces but about making this place safe for the dwarves from here on.
There hasn’t been a place we haven’t be able to crack and this should be no different.
By the way, what’s a symbol of Pain do?
It’s not just what a Symbol of Pain does, it’s who cast it.
A really powerful Wizard.
See the setup thread, please.
Better than me. I’m a little disappointed I didn’t load Protection From Good today- I could maybe use that as a counterspell.
"A Symbol of Pain won’t hurt us directly, but it will severely disrupt our ability to fight off anything that we find over the next few minutes, maybe (extreme outside) half an hour. No damage, and it won’t kill anyone, but it will hurt something terrible. Let’s try to make sure that we avoid triggering it.
What’s more interesting than the Symbol is the implication- a very powerful wizard or priest cast that."
Deor will start with a Comprehend Languages to see if we can make any more sense of the old runes.
Using the Comprehend Languages, Deor deciphers the ancient Runes. It was not as Gil-Gandel and Gilraen thought. Instead of an ancient human chief, it turns out that an Ancient Noldorian that had escaped the very Dungeons of Angband, Prison of Morgoth himself, was captured by men of Uldor’s people and left broken and half-mad locked forever beneath seals that would prevent him from fleeing to the Halls of Mandos. The Iron Prison lies beneath the 5 seals of Morgoth. Worse yet, it appears Morgoth’s Captain performed the dark sorcery.
The symbol of Pain appears to be just a warning. Gilraen will have but a small chance to temporarily halt the magic.
Glorfindel, “Thank you Deor. I would like to try this and see what is next. It sounds as if one of my own has been trapped here for at least 7000 years. His spirit deserves release from his torment. First we find Brevarn the Beorning that had been trapped by a lesser Sorcerer for a lesser time and now we find a nameless Noldorian that was strong enough to escape from Angband made to suffer an even worse fate.”
Thoroncir says, “So… knowing your people as you do, my lord Glorfindel, do you think this ancient Elf will emerge wrathful at whomever he finds, unable to distinguish between those who imprisoned him so long ago and those who now free him, or is he more likely to be kindly disposed towards we who set him at liberty once more?”
Glorfindel, “I suspect that he is long dead, but his Fëa has somehow been trapped. I would expect this spirit to mainly be in agony and looking to flee swiftly to the Halls of Mandos.”
“Then come, let us not prolong his agony a moment longer, but free him forthwith.”
Assuredly, and regardless of cost. looks uncharacteristically grim
I’ve never broken into a prison before. Are there any mundane methods to remove the magic without having to use Dispel Magic? If not, we have a time limit, assuming Gilraen can stop the Symbol of Pain.
What are the 5 seals of HIM, just as a matter of course? I would prefer to be prepared for what is below.
Ghân looks very serious at both this powerful magic and the terribly sad story.
He asks Gilraen if his Druidical Dispel Magic (normally 6th level, but 12th level with his Rod) could be used as well.
Or could the two casters exchange items temporarily?
Glorfindel, “I don’t know what the 5 seals will mean, but they would in theory be progressively worse. This means we need to be clever and use great caution. It also means we may not get through all of them today.”
Gilraen to Ghân, “I don’t believe my Ring will aid you and Taurgol will only aid you. You should be the first to try the dispel, followed by me and then Deor. Hopefully one of us can do the job. I wonder if the two of us can somehow work together on this. It might be worth a try. What do you think?”
Ghân bows to Gilraen.
“It would be my pleasure to work together. Also I can try Dispel Magic more than once - though it would reduce now many Cure Serious Wounds I could cast.”
Ghân is still absorbing the news that the Elf has been trapped for such a long time. Woses tend to think in terms of seasons, or perhaps a decade at most…
