Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

I thought Elfstan was checking the stone house? The bow string on the ballista-bow is probably not easy to cut but would not cost the invisibility. Though you couldn’t even use Sting to try and do it.

From the description, Gwaelur may well be able to collaspe the front tunnel. It won’t plug the trolls for long but it would buy some time for sure.

Gilraen, "Gwaelur needs to be up the hill and ready to go in if the door opens. The Trolls won’t be coming out yet and the storm will already be dangerous by the time it gets dark enough for them to exit. I would be following him and Sir Thoroncir up to support them. Are we perhaps better off trying to go up the stairs under the tower and through the hill instead? The front door sounds impossible to open from the outside.

If I can collapse the tunnel with enough time to make it back into position I will do that. Combine that with the traps set and we should be in good shape.

Is Ghan casting his lightning yet? Now might be the time if he isn’t.

Actually, I was thinking maybe he could try it if the troll makes it out of the tower, not before. Right now he is checking the house.

So it appears we will try to time this for an assault immediately after the lightning bolt. We need them to open the door though in this plan. Ghân first bolt will go off to try and damage the roof enough to ruin a trolls day and Gwaelur will try to collapse the mouth of the tunnel and then jog up the hill. Gorbo will volunteer to watch the tunnel with his dog and the plan to run if a troll comes out.

Curu volunteers to stand with Gwaelur and Thoroncir.

Gilraen desperately signals to not accept this and find an excuse to hold him back. Inspiration strikes, “Curunauth, perhaps you could assist Gwaelur on the tunnel?”

What is Mulligan planning? Sling support or sneaking inside? What is Elfstan planning in battle? Sting, Sling or Sneaking?

Curu, Gilraen is right. I could use the help on the tunnel more than I could in the battle. Besides we need someone there in case something makes it through the tunnel anyway.

Elfstan will try to use his invisibility to get a chance to cut the string on that monstrous crossbow. Failing the chance or deeming it suicidal, he will look for backs to poke with Sting.

Ghân will use the information gathered by the Scouts to help him decide where to hit the roof with the initial stroke of Call Lightning.

August 4[sup]th[/sup] 12:50 PM. The skies are threatening, the rain can’t be more than 15 minutes off.

Ghân begins casting Call Lightning. Deor and Lorli keep watch. Folca is watching the door and circling the tower. Swiftwing is with Miron.

Gwaelur and Curunauth head to the tunnel fast with Morbo and Fenrig keeping lookout.

Elfstan heads up to check out the house.

Mulligan, Miron and Gil-Gandel head back up as Thoroncir and Gilraen wait for Gwaelur to head up.

Elfstan finds the house is sealed and shuttered tight. He cannot look into the house. It looks to be in very good shape.

Gwaelur believes he can partially cave in the tunnel and begins. Curu and Morbo help with Fenrig guarding.

Elfstan will stay somewhat near to Thoroncir and wait for the lightning and the trolls.

Sir Thoroncir is ready for anything… he hopes. His gloved hand clasps his longsword’s hilt nervously as he looks from the threatening skies to the trolls’ tower to the Princess Gilraen, standing near him, her dark hair streaming in the wind which is already beginning to pick up. He takes courage from her calm and lovely presence.

He wonders if perhaps the trolls could be attacked and killed one by one, if a bottleneck develops at the tower’s doorway? If they have to crouch to exit, their heads would presumably be low(er) to the ground and more vulnerable to a sword attack.

Mulligan looks at the assembled party and decides on her course of action.

She will be sneaking back into the tower to give advance warning if anything untoward should happen. Not to mention the possiblity setting the ladders on fire, or making it too slippy to climb to prevent the trolls and goblins getting together.

Actually, making the ladders slippy has real possibilities. If I use torch oil, they can be lit as well.

Elfstan, do you want a hand getting in to cut the string on the ballista while they are not expecting it?

Elfstan to Mulligan, “I would love to cut that string on the crossbow, but I’m confused. What is your plan for the roof falling in on our heads when the lightning hits it?”

Mulligan to Elfstan, "We still have 10 minutes or so. You don’t have to cut all the way through it as well. Just enough to make it snap under tension. I certainly hope Ghan’s Lightning Bolt can collapse the ceiling, but I don’t think it will be that easy. "

“If we have time, I’m your Hobbit!”

The DM has been pretty forgiving on our use of the time before the storm. I don’t want to abuse it though.

Elfstan does not have time to reconnect with Mulligan after checking the house to sneak inside and try to cut the ballista. Mulligan sneaks in to oil the stairs going up. Elfstan does spy Sir Thoroncir and Princess Gilraen waiting a short distance off the path near the foot of the hill. He waits to join them why keeping an eye on the tower and building.

Gilraen looking calm is inwardly nervous and a bit frightened. She never imagined fighting trolls herself and tries to remember everything she learned from her father, uncles and Pippin. She takes courage from Thoroncir who looks so calm and brave despite him being but a few years older than herself.

Gil-Gandel and Miron are in position. There is shouting within the tower though. Someone must have been seen by now. Hopefully it is not Mulligan inside.

Ghân has casted his spell and is waiting for the right time.

Gwaelur has a good part of the excavation started and has given detailed instructions to Gorbo and Curu. They should have the tunnel collapsed in another 10 minutes.

Gwaelur jogs back to spellcasters to update them and then marches to Thoroncir and Gilraen. The three head up the long winding path at a fast walk. The rain has begun.

Where is Mulligan and is she OK?

The first Lightning Bolt comes crashing down on the weakest part of the tower’s roof. A very loud crack is heard. Rubble falls of the top of the tower mainly to the west side and part of the roof falls in as smoke rises up. Folca will soon need to land as the wind is picking up but Deor sees that a large section of roof has collapsed.

Back inside, Mulligan had already moved on to coat the top steps and sides of the stairs going down to the ground floor and was waiting quietly out of the way near the window when the shouting happened. She used two of her flasks of oil up.

She made out that a troll upstairs was yelling about two humans near the path. A goblin yelled “I think I saw something moving in the trees like Hrim said before.” The Troll bellows, “Hrim, where are you lazy gob? Hello?”

The Troll on the ground floor sounding sleepy roars back, “Shut your yap Fred, it’s time for sleep not yelling.”
Fred (the Troll), “On your feet Rub, there be men about and maybe sumthing else. Where’s Hrim? He was sent to wake you, didja et ‘im and roll back over?”
Rub, “I ain’t et no gob in years andja be knowing dis Fred.”

Elfstan saw the three moving up the path and once they within the wall, he climbs up the tower and into a window to help Mulligan however she needs it. He hears the tail end of the shouting from 2nd floor to ground floor.

Mulligan realizes Rub has gotten up and then the huge crack from above and rock and dust comes falling down. It looks like the second floor held the rubble but a troll comes flying down the stairs in a panic and hits his head hard on the wooden steps at least three times as his feet flew out from under him on the slippery steps. He lands hard on his backside and his ballista-bow lands on him with a thud.
Gwaelur rushes the door and starts chopping at it.

What do the Hobbits do, there is a prone troll on the floor and chaos above?
What does everyone outside do?

I really hope that troll is really dazed…

Mulligan draws in a deep breath and does her best impression of Rub. “Open the door Fred, them oomans is outside”.

…and I really hope this works as well…

Move and start cutting the ballista rope with a dagger.

…please lucky Wose charm be lucky…

Ghân is confused why almost everyone has moved forward of his Plant Growth.
Nevertheless he will cast the next Lightning Bolt on any Troll he sees (provided that no party member is in the area of effect).
If no Troll has appeared by the time he needs to cast the next Lightning Bolt, he will hit the Tower again.
If a Troll approaches him, he will Entangle it, then start another Lightning Bolt.
And so on.

Fred, “Rub wot 'appened. Fall troo da floor?”

Elfstan considers the situation and decides to drive Sting through the trolls left eye and try and get his brain.

Mulligan finds cutting the ballista string tough going even with her magic dagger.

Oops! Too late…

Elfstan slams Sting into the troll’s eye with everything he’s got!

Stops cutting ballista string.

Deep breath.

Mulligan as Rub “Yerr, Banged my 'ead as well. What was dat crash?”
