Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

Ghân leads the animals into the house, heals up the party with Goodberries, Herbal Cures and Cure Light Wounds and stands ready to cast Detect Magic.

He can use the Call Lightning on any goblins (or Trolls) seen fleeing.

Damn, did it again. Of course that was suppose to be Elfstan down below and unseen.

Mulligan finds the kitchen is in good shape and has an old iron stove and a large fireplace with a bread oven. There is of course no food.

Lorliana, “Thank Deor, it was good to be of value and use my training.”

Not really but when Sting or Curu’s Sword are glowing I try to use RoyalBlue for the Color. One time I used purple almost as a small joke as Sting was glowing and covered in troll blood. I think I used orange for when Gil-Gandel had his swords flaming. I’ve tried Silver and Gold at various times. The Bold Gold almost works for Gilraen’s gift via Arwen from Galadriel. Neither Sting or the long sword are still glowing. The sacks are loaded mainly with treasures, especially coins. The back packs have items, flasks, jerked meat, hard breads and some gems. The goblins have gems and rings stuffed in their pockets. The three find no sign of hidden caches using Miron’s bullseye lantern. A search will be a good idea later.

There was a problem with one sack on the way back up. Miron however had a spare on him and doubled up the bad one.

The muddy animals get led into the clean house but there is nothing for it. The rains are now very hard and some gusts are extremely strong. The party hears that the thunder is only a few leagues away now. It looks like the fire in the tower is mostly out.

Everyone makes it to the wholesome house.

In the house Gilraen finds that every window is magically trapped and many of the items radiate a magic seperate from the house itself. She looks almost childlike exploring with Mulligan. When Gorbo comes in she runs dances over, “Thank you Gorbo, this house is a marvel. It was built by my people long ago and lost to our history. I doubt even the Rangers of the North knew of it as unlikely as that seems. If they knew of it, they left it undisturbed.”

After a short pause, “It would be best if when we leave, we leave all the contents and clean up the house. I think this place needs study.” With a big smile, “Unless of course Deor and Lorliana can discover its secrets.”

I nearly forgot there is a pile of usuable wood near the kitchen fireplace and a log in the fireplace that radiates magic.

“That sounds like a challenge!”

After a few minutes of rest, Deor will build a fire in the bread oven (because he’s sure the hobbits will have something in mind!) using non-magic wood and restudy his spells (he’s got all his first-level ones remaining). He’ll load [color=blue]Detect Magic, Identify, and Read Magic. Then he’ll turn his attention to the magic items in the house, first the log in the fireplace. It’s probably an ever-burning log, but he’ll make sure before he burns it!

Now that we seem to be safe from creatures, do you think we have time to go recover some of those arrows and bullits we fired?

I would very much like to not lose any of my bolts.

I’m all in favour of you not losing any bolts, too - let’s get to it.

Gilraen to Gwaelur, “Go quick and bring Ghân too as my Detect Magic is nearly done.”

I’ll assume Ghân is agreeable and that Miron and Mulligan are also anxious to recover there missiles.

Deor recalls he needs to sleep first before changing spells. If fact sleep might be a good idea soon.

“Gilraen, before your spell runs out, would you mind giving these bags and packs a look?”

With apologies to Mulligan for not helping with cooking, Elfstan will go back to help recover the bolts and bullets. He might not be able to detect the magic, but he has a pretty good eye for seeing when something is physically safe to pick up. He will lead Ghan to any other places of interest as well, in hopes of finding other magical items.

Gilraen will check the contents of the bags but Mulligan would already be on the way as she used many of her valuable silver bullets. That and a longer search should wait until after the storm.

As to the magical contents of the bags and what the Goblins had on them:
Dagger probably made of Dwarven Steel.
Gold Ring with 7 small stones.
2 brass buttons (Eagles)
Honing stone
the contents of 3 flasks. The Flasks are leather covered heavy glass.
a Medium Shield with the device of a Knight charging a Dragon.
a Cloak that on inspection seems to change colors to blend

On counting there are 350 gold & 390 silver. The gems need to be studied more.

After the horse are stabled as well as they can be, and he has brushed, curried and fed his light warhorse Seafoam, Thoroncir walks through the house with Gilraen, looking around with great interest. He has never seen such a place before, and finds it very odd.

He then suggests a meal to keep everyone’s strength up, and will stand watch if others want to rest.

Following up on the DM’s hint in the setup thread, if anyone needs Thoroncir to mind your back while you’re recovering silver bullets or arrows, just say the word.

The small party of Gil-Gandel, Gwaelur, Ghân & Mulligan recover most of the missiles. Gwaelur’s Bolt and all of the bullets. Of Miron’s 13 arrows, 3 are broken but may be repairable back in Rivendell. I don’t think Gil-Gandel shot an arrow. That might be a first.

They head back through a small blast of hail. Mulligan being shielded by Gwaelur’s shield. By 2:30pm the storm is raging and the roof of the tower collaspes with a great blast of a lightning bolt hitting it. The storm is severe and several more bolts hit nearby. One bolt hits the roof of the house but all that happens is a tingling for everyone in the house.

The small amount of wood will not stretch far, does the party put the magic log back into the fireplace? Deor had removed it.

The sound of the hail and rain hitting the stone roof helps most people to sleep. The sleep is sound and many have odd dreams that seemed archaic and out of their experience. Mulligan dreams of fresh baked breads especially and Elfstan of pies, many many pies. Gwaelur dreamed of gleaming armor and weapons and of a smithy long gone in the fort near the west wall. Deor dreams of mulled apple cider served warm on a crisp autumn night with the leaves changing. He also dreams of an odd figure affixing a steel rod with 3 small brass balls to the highest roof of the house. Gil-Gandel happily lets everyone sleep feeling strangely safe in this old house. He knows it is older than even himself and has an air somewhat like old Lothlórien but different of course. Miron dreams of Ladies and Men raising and training Falcons. Ghân dreams of one of his own people long ago living in the house for a many seasons. He dreams this wise Wose did place many enchantments and protections upon this house and that the big men of this fort and the people of the Wose had a long and friendly relationship that must have reached back beyond known history. Thoroncir dreams of a mighty Lord on a mighty horse that once ruled this area for the King of Arnor. A mighty descendant of Númenor he was and a strong and pure leader. Gilraen dreamed of a beautiful lady who may well have been one of her own foremothers. She comes from old lineage that traces to Númenor itself. She held her people together against assaults by the WitchKing’s forces.

That’s one smart horse!

If our mounts are all stabled in the house, Ghân will organise poop partieis to keep it clean.

Have I heard rumours of magic “ever-burning logs”? Do my people use them? If so, then we’ll give it a go - I can’t think what else a log (especially if it shows signs of use) could be enchanted for.

Of course, there’s an outside chance it could be a cunningly-disguised staff of the magi with the unique variant that setting light to it is the same as a retributive strike, but I think we can chance that.

Mulligan will sleep deeply curled up around the wildcat keeping the pair of them warm.

Baked bread is not one of her usual dreams. They normally involve sneaking into dragon’s lairs or tall castles.

Gil-Gandel has heard of a variety of enchanted logs that either burn very slowly or extend the burning of other wood or some similar useful enchantment. He believes most of the stories tie back to when the Woses dwelt more commonly among the fathers of the Númenóreans.

Placing the log in the fire, it is observed that the magic log does not burn itself and the remaining wood burns far more slowly but with the same heat. It appears the wood lasts 6 times longer.

The poop patrol goes well once Ghân wakes back up from a very sound and restful sleep.

The DM throws the brass hit dice at Elendil’s Heir

When Ghân gets up it is nearly 8pm and the storm is still raging. The party has heard trees coming down. It sounds like a battle between giants. He can re-pick his spells and I will assume he casts another Predict Weather. The Storm will die down by **4am **but it will be rainy all day tomorrow through **8am **at least.

What does the party do while wating for the storm to pass? They really need to stay in the house until 3am at least.

Might as well stay in the house and get caught up on our sleep, at least until dawn (normal watch-standing schedule, I presume). Are we in such a rush to get to Rivendell that we’ll want to travel in a driving rain, or should we just sit tight through the morning to let the storm pass? I’d say wait.

I would agree with waiting until the rain has passed. Is there any rush to pass up on this accomodation.

So, who’s for supper?

Anything else about the house or leave it be?

Well, I am going to see if I can bake some bread as well as supper. After supper, I will spend some time exploring the rest of the house and see what wonders it holds.

I’m sure that our my learned companions will be interested in the books and enchantments surrounding this house.
