Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

Odd that you all missed what I was getting at there, since Mulligan had referred to it earlier, but I was speaking of Gandalf tricking the trolls in ‘The Hobbit’. I don’t recall anyone being wounded other than the dwarves pride.

Elfstan to Curu, “I’m not worried about a few goblins, I’m worried about there being another troll!”

Curunauth to Elfstan, “Ah, more trolls, I never thought about that. Good point, but they can’t get too far. Maybe most of us should go then.”

Thoroncir asks, “I thought we already knew from Ghan’s little animal friends that there were only four trolls?” He shrugs. “Ah, well, better safe than sorry.”

Time is fairly urgent, someone decide what is next?

Hunt goblins and maybe trolls?
Checking the house?
Fighting the Fire?
Something else I am not thinking of?

Some combination of two of the above?

Elfstan replies dryly, “What happens if a squirrel can only count to four?”

“I think we’re good with just me, Curu, and Miron. If Deor can make me invisible again today I can sneak ahead of them and call them up if needed or flee if we do find something more nasty than a goblin. I can make a quick check for traps on the way too. The rest of you can make sure we have shelter either here or in the house and make sure the horses are safe.”

How seriously dangerous is the fire at this point? If it isn’t urgent to get the fire under controll right away, I would vote for checking the house/Goblin hunting in tandem. Splitting the party into two groups.

Elfstan and Curu could probably make hash out of a dozen goblins without breaking a sweat. Miron is just icing on the cake. If they find something worse, Elfstan will be invisible and Miron and Curu are Elves (hint: they can run fast!). The rest of the party can get our accommodations secured be it by Mulligan scouting the house, putting out the fire, or whatever else is required.

It said “four”, not “hrair”, right? Then we’re fine!

Apart from his disability to figure out exactly where he is at the moment (an effect of being so in tune with the metaphysical world that one loses track of the physical one, naturally!), Deor is ready to make hobbits Invisible as required. He recommends it, too; it sure won’t be a disadvantage.

The fire looks like it is likely to go out. The rest of the roof might collapse though. No one can check.

BTW: The birds, canines and even horses would like to get out of this rain. The horses in particular are getting nervous.

Deor casts invisibility on Elfstan.

Does the party split up to investigate the house? It sounds like it.

Ghan, why don’t you and Thoroncir find the animals some shelter. If you want to check the house and see if that is suitable I will be happy to come with you. It’s possible Deor might want to come along as well, his hawk must hate the rain.

I would be interested in going to see the house.

Actually, is there anywhere in here a small fire could be lit safely, like a firepit, to allow people to warm up an dry off.

If so, light one.

“Miron, you and Curu come down to the basement with me and then give me a few minutes to see what’s behind that door. I’ll signal when it’s clear or if we need to run!”

Thoroncir can speak Horse and will be able to calm the party’s horses and help bring them in under shelter, so that’s what he’ll do. He suggests Ghan come with him to help with the canines and other critters. Perhaps Gwaelur and Gil-Gandel can check the house while Elfstan, Miron and Curunauth scout out the basement of the tower.

Fair enough. Should Deor come with us or will he go with you? Deor, do you have a preference?

I’d suggest he go with you. You may yet have need of spellcraft. Gilraen will, I trust, go with her knight-errant.

No need for a fire, the tower is fairly warm and mostly dry, especially the ground floor.

We split up then, let Gorbo, Ghân and Thoroncir see to the animals. Bringing the canines and birds in the tower for now. Gilraen does not join him; she is the very high born Dúnadan and can spare the Detect Magic. Missy might also prove useful as she appears to detect undead.

Elfstan who is invisible goes down with Curunauth with his glowing sword out and Miron supporting.

Mulligan, Deor, Gwaelur, Gilraen, Lorliana and Gil-Gandel head to the porch of the house.

Gilraen casts a Detect Magic and heads over fast with the rest. Thoroncir is keeping a nervous eye on the porch as is ready to run to help.

Gilraen reports, the entire house is radiating magic, strong magic that feels good. Mulligan checks the door and sees no sign of a lock to pick and finds no traps. Gil-Gandel and Gwaelur both agree the door is magical. Mulligan of course says, “mellon” but it does not open the door.

Deor looks it over and sees nothing hidden. Lorliana is pondering it as Gil-Gandel, Mulligan and Gwaelur all look for hidden door or levels or latches or anything like that. This goes on for several minutes.

Lorliana goes, “I know! A Elbereth Gilthoniel!”

The door swings open and Gilraen exclaims, “Of course, no servant of the Dark Lord could be expected to call upon the Star Queen. Thank you Lorliana. I will cast Find Traps but I think we will be fine.” She casts and holds up her bauble. Mulligan slips in and looks about followed by Gil-Gandel and Gwaelur who sees the stone work is very good. Dúnedain or Dwarven work surely.

Before heading down Curunauth says, “I nearly forgot. I recovered your knives before we collapsed the tunnel. Here you go brave Elfstan.”

Heading down Mulligan finds the torches are relit. Some of the oil had been smeared and a dead broken Goblin lies on the first landing obviously pushed out of the way after a bad fall.

The three proceed quietly. Curunauth’s sword glows every brighter. Eventually the reach the tunnel and Elfstan finds two Goblins try to dig out the tunnel to the outside. Miron fires and kills one as Curunauth charges and kills the other. Elfstan notices two heavy backpacks and two bulging sacks nearby.

The house is clean and dry and only a little stale. There is still some wooden furniture inside of high gloss varnish and tatters decayed tapestries and upholstery. There are a few pieces of sculpture and some paintings on the walls of the front hall. Going through the house quickly it appears wholesome, secure and dry. It has 2 main stories and a few attic rooms. The roof is in perfect shape. The shutters are steel and rust free. There are candles all about. One room has some books. It looks like a very safe place to stay in the storm.

Wow, I can be in two places at once

Mulligan will sweep the place for traps and secret doors out of habit. Followed by a close inspection of the kitchen.

“Handy having a loremaster around, isn’t it? Lorliana, you’re a wonder.”

“Let’s start moving the horses inside. Ghan, Gilraen, would either of you care to begin searching for magic items? I think Sting comes from just such a trolls’ hoard, and we may make out very nicely on this.”

Do we have a convention for the color used to denote magic items? I think I’ve seen blue, light blue, blue and bold, blue in different fonts, pink, purple, orange…

Ahhh yes, this might be part of the legendary troll hoard previously mentioned by our DM!

Elfstan checks Sting and Curu’s blade to see if the glow has finally gone out. He takes a cursory check through the bags and packs and then loads up the Elves with them. He also checks the bodies of the goblins. On the way back up, he will spend a little more time looking at the area(s) that he hadn’t seen on his previous trip. Later the party will have to do a more thorough search with detect magic running.

Deor hopes that the bags don’t explode when Elfstan does this.
