Ghân is very reluctant to abandon the Field HQ and would prefer to shelter the mounts in a grove.
Nevertheless the party seem committed to fighting Trolls indoors, so he leads the mounts up to the Tower.
Can he cast his Call Lightning anywhere useful?
The party stands ready. They hear Trolls rushing up the steps. Elfstan scrambles up. All stand ready, Miron has his bow ready and his +1 arrows. Gwaelur and Thoroncir are on either side of the opening. Gilraen has her Bauble glowing and begins her Song of Ëste again. Mulligan is ready to unleash her +2 Silver Bullets and Elfstan is looking for a safe strike with Sting.
A Troll charges up the stairs, Gwaelur swings a mighty blow and hits for 14. Thoroncir strikes with his Long Sword but does not penetrate the tough hide. Mulligan in a bit of haste nearly hits Thoroncir with her first bullet. The troll moved quicker than she expected perhaps. Miron’s arrow bounces off the Troll’s tough skin. Mulligan’s second bullet misses. Miron’s second arrow hits for 10. The Troll hits Gwaelur with a large club for 16*. Miron’s final arrow hits the Troll in his open maw for 28! (Critical hit). Another Troll is behind this one. Elfstan yells for help hoping the party is near.
Gwaelur strikes and hits for 20 and Thoroncir hits for 19 more. Mulligan’s bullets adds 6. Miron’s arrow misses. The Trolls club hits Gwaelur for another 15 (31 total). Eflstan stabs him in the hammy and dances back out of the way. This 12 drops the troll backwards slowing down the next Troll coming up. Gil-Gandel hear the cry for help and speeds back to the tower. Ghân and Deor follow but leave the dogs to guard the others. Curunauth follows them of course.
The collapsed tunnel would probably be a useful place for the Lightning for Ghân. As to the camp, the horses must get up the hill before the full storm hits. Gorbo never thought even his large grove of Oak Trees was going to be safe. The smaller trees here will offer little protection for when the storm gets going.
Reminder, Gilraen’s song reduces the damage by -1 per die or it would have been 18.
Gwaelur is hurt badly, but is willing to press on. He wonders if it wouldn’t be possible for him to maybe get a goodberry or two before the next troll arrives?
Let me know when I have anything to shoot at, and I’ll have at it. Oh for a bardic war-chant, but I’m afraid you people will have to wait for anything useful in-combat. It’s very generous of the DM to allow me to be effective so often out of combat.
The Troll rushing up has a huge frightening Spear that looks more like a small tree and charging for Gwaelur. Thoroncir being Thoroncir jumps down from the side; Long sword down to stab and distract the troll. He does not hit but drives the huge spear downwards and then tumbles down the stairs taking 3 points. The troll misses Gwaelur and this allows Gwaelur to take a quick chop and hit for 17 points and pull back. Miron’s first arrow bounces but Mulligan’s +2 silver Bullet hits for 5 in his cheek, missing his eye. Elfstan misses with Sting. Gil-Gandel racing in misses with his short but hits with his long for 10! Mulligan misses but Miron hits with his third shot through his hand for 15.
As the Troll makes it to the top, Gilraen sings out, “A Elbereth Gilthoniel, Silivren penna miriel. Cálë Cálë Cálë!” A brilliant beam of light shoots forth from her gift and dazzles and partially blinds the Troll.
He takes a great sweeping swing with his spear like a giant bat. Gil-Gandel leaps over it and goes in close where he hits again with his long for another 6. Elfstan ducks under and Stabs the troll behind the knee for 11. Mulligan hits for 6 more. Miron misses and the Troll punches Gil-Gandel knocking him back 6’ for 12 points* . Mulligan misses. Miron hits for 11 and then Gwaelur misses with a +5 Bolt. Miron’s final shot misses.
Deor casts a magic missile and hits for 6. Ghân races to Gwaelur and casts a curelight and feeds him 8 berries. Gwaelur is only down 18 points now.
The Troll blinking bats at Gil-Gandel who dances away. Thoroncir meanwhile strike upwards from behind and does 16. Miron’s arrow misses as does Mulligan’s bullet. Elfstan misses with Sting. Gwaelur hits the Troll in the eye and it drops forward stone cold dead.
Sting is still glowing.
This is quicker to heal damage though Details later.
Thoroncir, shaken and bruised, will thrust his sword deep into the skulls of both trolls to ensure that they are well and truly dead. He asks Gilraen to attend to Gwaelur’s wounds and, noting that Sting is still glowing, remains alert for goblins.
At least two goblins remaining. Let’s pick either the tower or the house and clear it, now! We need to be safe when this storm hits, or we’ll lose all our mounts even if we survive!
Curunauth, “Give us one extra and Elfstan and I can flush those little buggers out quick I think.”
Ghân gives Thoroncir 2 goodberries and some herbal remedy to complete his healing. He then turns to Gil-Gandel. Only 6 points is actual damage, quickly done with a Cure Light and a goodberry. The other points will heal swiftly especially with a little herbal attention.
Gilraen swiftly casts a Cure Light on Gwaelur for 14 and he is down only 4. She completes the job with herbs. She says,“Perhaps we should check the house before the rain gets worse. Ghân should I cast the Detect Magic or should you? I can also cast a Find Traps before entering. I am out of firsts but have all of my seconds.”
Lorli ducks in the door, “Is the tower safe, the rain is getting worse. I have the horses on the south side as the storm is blowing from the north. Gorbo and the Ghân’s dogs are with them. He asks me to ask if it is safe to call Fenrig back up, he would like to get him to safety soon.”
Elfstan looks at the trolls in amazement and says, “Maybe Gandalf’s method was easier on everyone, but we just dealt with four trolls! Well done!”
Seeing Sting still glowing and hearing Curu’s statement he looks at Miron and says, “Want to join us on a little goblin hunt? Maybe Mulligan can take someone and go check on the house at the same time?”
Sir Thoroncir is, of course, game for a goblin-hunt. But first he says ruefully to Elfstan, “The troll which the Fellowship defeated in Moria must have been mighty indeed to have withstood their attentions for so long; this lot was puny by comparison, but you will not hear me complain!”
Elfstan to Deor, “Do you have another invisibility spell ready? I think maybe I should go ahead of Miron and Curu as quietly as I can. I would rather not risk my life on a squirrel’s ability to count to four.”
Elfstan, I believe you missed the part about the 30 or so Orcs that were also trying to get to the Fellowship at the time. However, four trolls in a day is not to be belittled at all. Let’s just try and not do it again any time soon.
Anyway, let’s make sure that upstairs fire is out first and then we can take a look at the house and see if we can get inside.
The full force of the storm will be upon us soon and we could do with being secure before it hits.
Curunauth, "Elfstan, stay visible. We need to use our swords to flush them out and with Miron along I think we have little to fear. As to the Troll, well we basically took them one at a time. I don’t know specifically of the one they fought in Moria, but from my understanding a single Sting to the foot drove it away and it was not even strong enough to break the heavy Dwarven door. I would guess it was not so tough a Troll or Sting has powers we did not just see in Elfstan’s hand.
So should the three of us head down to see about these Goblins and young Lorli’s question still needs an answer. Perhaps Sir Thoroncir could go help with the horses in the meantime. If you are going to check that house, best do it soon.”
