Let’s ignore all the bits with Deor on this page so far, yes? Pretend we didn’t just make that huge mistake.
Mulligan, we probably have a few minutes before we need to do anything about the trolls downstairs, let’s wait until the elf get’s back with the rest of the party before we send you and Elfstan into harms way with no invisibility.
Not that I don’t find you to be highly skilled, but why take the huge risk.
Now let’s seach this place for anything that could be of use to us in controlling these fires. Large tapestries, buckets, anything.
A couple of others wrap your hands in some cloth (use your shirts if you have to) and get them wet, then start getting the burning wood outside. Use your common sense, don’t burn yourselves.
What do we have to work with?
Actually there are some large clay pots that the trolls probably used for cups and one large pot (cauldron) already half full of water. That and Miron hears a steady stream of water already coming down outside the tower that could be used to refill as the door is open.
Excelent, everybody get your hands and faces wet and then let’s start getting these fires wet.
Thoroncir, you probably have the best strength speed combo of the group, can you be in charge of refils to the large jug? If it is too heavy maybe Miron can help you.
I will start working to get the stuff already on fire outside so we don’t have to waste too much water down here. The hobbits and Gilraen can help with the smaller pots full of water. Once it is manageable down here let’s work on trying to keep the upstairs fire from coming downstairs.
Thoroncir will sheathe his sword and help with the bucket brigade (he has no little experience fighting shipboard fires, as it happens). He will keep an ear peeled for the arrival of any trolls or goblins, and will be ready to move to Gilraen’s defense.
I’ll help out with the fire, the scouting can wait for the moment and besides if they do come from below, we can bottleneck them at the stairs/ladder coming up.
Over the next 10 minutes, Gil-Gandel and Ghân lead the rest of the party and the horses up to the tower and a bucket brigade goes into action. The small containers are being use to fill the cauldron that Thoroncir hauls up. He and Gwaelur dowse the fires and Gwaelur has chopped out the burning stairs.
The rain has really picked up and there is more steam then smoke rising from the roof.
Do you lead the horses inside, leave them out as long as possible or try the house?
It is getting darker but still shouldn’t be dark enough for trolls. The extra hands will help the bucket brigade.
Elfstan finds a dark spot but near the stairs. He listens carefully. After about 5 minutes he hears the sound of the Troll approaching.
If more people are turning up, Mulligan will let them take over and try to gain entry to the house. Probably starting by trying to open the front door, keeping an eye out for traps, snares, wizard glyphs, funny elvish writing etc. etc
If anything Elvish does appear, the answer is “mellon”
Elfstan gives an audible warning signal to the party above. If his spot in the shadows is out of the path to the steps and seems dark enough to remain concealed, he will stay there.
Elfstan thinks it is safe especially with his Elven Cloak. In a minute though 3 stealthy smallish Goblins appear in the doorway and they cautiously head up the stairs.
Gwaelur notices Elfstan’s signal and decides that an approaching troll is more important than the now (seemingly) under control fire.
He grabs his axe and starts to head closer to the top of the stairs, looking to see if there is a good spot for him to lay in wait for anything that might be coming.
Remember Gwaelur and Thoroncir were both on the first floor and not the ground floor. I’ll assume both come down.
Another piece of confusion I just introduced, this is before the party made it up the hill. They are on the way up currently so Mulligan is still in the building. Sorry about this.
I will assume that on the signal the bucket Brigade halts and Gwaelur and Thoroncir both come down. The fire could still get out of control but I believe you are correct that the Trolls take priority.
As you come down the stairs to the ground floor Gwaelur notices a Goblin peering up.
Stupid stairs have me confused. The goblin is staring up the basement stairs looking onto the ground floor not up the stairs that lead to the first floor? I am assuming that this is correct, since if it isn’t I would hope that someone would kill the bugger before Thor and I got down to the ground floor.
Ok, running with that assumption. How far down the stairs is the goblin? Can I keep it distracted for a second while Mulligan hits it with a bullet or should I just jump down on it with my axe?
The idea is to kill it without causing a lot of noise that will draw even more attention to ourselves.
Assuming Gwaelur is signaling for Mulligan to release, a *+2 silver bullet **goes flying and kills the first goblin.
Gwaelur heads down to chop the next as he sees a sudden flash of elven blue light quench itself in the rear goblin. Elfstan and Sting have claimed a victim. The second goblin lets out a yell, “Dwarves, Dwarves are upon us! Help glurggle” as Gwaelur’s Axe quickly ends his career as tower crier.
Mulligan is pretty sure she couldn’t miss and would definitely kill with the +2 silver bullets and the bullet should survive, it is only evil wolves they explode against.
Depending on how close the troll seems to be, Elfstan will try to get back to his shadows in the basement. If it doesn’t seem doable, he will waste no time in putting the Dwarf between himself and the steps.
I’m not sure it is wise to head back down Elfstan, you don’t want to get caught behind a troll or two. I guess we will find out shortly if the others down there heard that.
I do hope Gil-Gandel and the others get here soon.
