Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game. Fourth Adventure. Journey to Rivendell

Of course. Lead the way.

I’ll take a quiet look downstairs. See if I can get advance warning of anything they are planning.

Gilraen looks down quickly at Thoroncir and rapidly casts two of her Cure lights on Thoroncir thus ending her song. She heals him 15 and feeds him 6 Goodberries. She whispers, “Thank you brave knight. Thank you.”

Elfstan leads Gwaelur up to the first floor. Elfstan keeps watch as Gwaelur puts his boot to the Trolls forehead and gives a great heave. Sting pulls out covered in gore. The stairs up are burning well and fiery ash and cinder are hitting the floor. The fire is going too well considering we will need the tower to protect us from the storm.

Mulligan and Gil-Gandel take a quick look below. There is a large chamber at the foot of the stairs. The floor is rough hewn like it was torn up. There is a stone door open to the south and several torches lighting the chamber.

Outside, Curunauth has collapsed the tunnel opening and returned to Ghân at the camp. His sword is glowing but not strongly. Morbo has left Fenrig to guard the tunnel and is also back.

Curu, “That is a might amount of smoke coming from that tower. I hope we will be able to use it. I feel this will be an especially bad storm. Should we perhaps start up closer? Deor said they made it inside.”

With a quick grin, Elfstan says, “Thanks, my friend! I guess I don’t know my own strength.”

Elfstan takes Sting and gives a quick check and wipes it off on any convenient looking cloth that doesn’t belong to him or Gwaelur.

If there is nothing obvious that can be done to fight the fire, he will head back down to find Mulligan and the rest. He’s curious to see what they are looking at and maybe see what’s between the ground floor of the tower and the passage he explored earlier.

If Ghân can reply without losing his Call Lightning he will explain to Curu that he thought the plan was to:

  • blast the Tower, exposing it to sunlight
  • lure a single Troll outside
  • use tripwires and Entangle to slow Trolls down
  • hammer Trolls with repeated blasts from Call Lightning
  • hold a defensive position about 300 yards away

Ghân is puzzled why most of the party have gone inside the Troll’s home to fight hand-to-hand, but is confident he is in the best position.

Thoroncir is still awed by the size and massiveness of the troll, and shaken from the tumult of the battle. He senses just how close he came to dying, and how soon death might yet claim him. Casting caution to the storm’s winds - for he knows now that to leave the world without taking this opportunity would be both senseless and tragic - he seizes Gilraen’s hand and kisses it. Still clasping her hand, he looks into her eyes and says, quietly but fiercely, “Thank you, my lady, and may the Valar bless you always. If by my life or death I might serve you, or bring you even a little happiness, I shall, without a moment’s hesitation.”

He squeezes and then releases her hand, clambers to his feet and picks up his sword. He calls out to Mulligan, “I heard you, O hobbit poetical! Gil-Gandel has a new rival, it seems. Well said!”

He looks around for the next threat to the party, determined to do his duty, his heart ablaze for love of the princess.

Curunauth responds to Ghân, “Ah yes, the luring out part of the plan never made any sense anyway. There was no way the trolls would come out until it was very dark and by then we would already be in serious danger from the storm that is building. As to the defensive position, I thought we were just for support and to protect animals until we could get them up and inside. We might want to start the herd up the hill now. It will only get harder as the rain gets harder. This feels like Hail weather.”

Once you cast the Call Lightning it is up and you can even cast other spells with no problems. In fact I allow ganging of Call Lightnings. This might prove useful in the future for you.

The big question, what do those inside do now?

The two trolls bellow are sleeping?

Do we have an invisible left? Can we get the area scouted? I would like to know if they are still asleep at the very least.

Let’s hope the rain starts quickly, because we’re not going to have much shelter at this point, the way the tower’s burning.

I have an Invisibility left, and I could replace two Sleeps for another.

We may need those sleeps yet.

What say the hobbits? Wanna take another quick look around and give us a post battle lay of the land while we try to put out some of these fires so we still have shelter when we are finished?

Yes, Elfstan would like to scout between here and the last door he got to from below.

If the rain really starts to fall in sheets, that might help put the fires out.

Time is ticking, someone give an order or two. Do the scouts scout or does the entire inside party go? Does anyone signal anything to the camp? Do you send a runner? Perhaps Swiftwing?

Gwaelur you don’t think this tower should take another of Ghân’s bolts but he said something before the battle about hitting it if a troll does not come out in 10 minutes.

REMEMBER TWO MORE TROLLS down below.

That was before we all ran inside though.

GAH!

Ok, hobbit’s get invisible and scout. Hurry. Everyone else, help me get these fires under control.

Oh, and someone should hurry and stop Ghan from casting another bolt on the tower.

Elf, maybe you. If not then new elf can do it.

Yes Gwaelur, of course we will.

Deor, just use invisible on Elfstan, save the sleeps for later, you may find you can swap them for something equally useful. You wouldn’t happen to have a Create Water spell that could put out a fire do you?

Miron, I suggest you hurry back to Ghan and the others and get them up here. It’s out of the rain and they can help put the fire out as well.

Chances are the trolls and goblins decided to head down their tunnel to get out. We will soon see if the tunnel collapse does the trick or not. If not we will have two rampaging trolls outside looking to get back in, hopefully with advance warning from Fenrig.

It’s such a lovely day.

No, I think that’s a clerical or druidic spell. I haven’t got much that’s useful in putting out fires.

Deor kneels next to Elfstan and runs through the incantation, rendering Elfstan Invisible.

Mulligan looks at where Elfstan was. “C’mon trollslayer, lets go take a look downstairs.”

Gil-Gandel is the swiftest by far and Miron is the trained Troll fighter.
Deor is down in the camp with Ghân. So Invisibility is out for now.

In which case, Elfstan and I go down without invisibility and only our natural cunning to aid us.

Gil-Gandel informs those outside and Miron gets ready to kill some more trolls.
