Gil-Gandel looks for a rock to take cover behind and start some one-string harp music for the benefit of the approaching audience. As I remember it, I’ve got all my arrows except one. If rushed, I’ll look to scurry up to one side of the trail and let the heavies through.
Score: Hobbit 1 - Elf 0
If nothing is in sight, vanish up the mountain side and try and come down behind them. Let the main set of re-inforcement Orcs go past.
I will be looking for anyone reporting back to a camp and then try to ambush them.
I don’t want word of this getting back to their camp, unless of course we are right by the camp and word has been passed back, in which case it is too late.
I did not make something clear, the orc was not on the trail but rather to the east of it. So Gil-Gandel and Mulligan are already well off the trail.
OK, that means Ghân’s spells can be safely cast, right?
Brin: Get back to the main group. I’ll guard the retreat and then rejoin you. I may be no Elf, but I can also use the forests to my advantage.
Assuming that the orcs are not appearing between the groups, I’ll do just as I said to ensure we regroup. If I’m not immediately overcome, I’ll toss the shield and re-arm my short sword. It’s an orc shield, and I don’t care if it is lost in the melee.
Is the party still 1/4 mile away? At a sprint, that’s ~60 seconds; with both moving towards the other figure 30 seconds until they meet. If I’m not overcome in 20 seconds, I’ll move off-road and attempt to flank our main party’s position. If cover allows, I’ll string my bow and pick targets of opportunity from the cover of woods.
That said, if people don’t retreat, I’ll have to stand fast against the initial charge with what I have in hand. It was nice knowing you guys
I hate being brave
Yes, but as noted in the description so far, including Moose scrambling up the mountain, the plants in the area might not be the best for entangles. The Entangle is not worthless, but of less value than in grasslands or woods.
Now the Orcs will actually be charging downwards as our rear is trying to run up.
However, the orcs were actually further away.
The front show be able to fan out amid the rocks a bit. Deor & Ghân stand ready with spells. Gil-Gandel seaks a target.
**We are out of the woods up onto the rocks. **
“A retreat seems like a prudent idea,” says Caramir, who ensures he is near Brin as the others retreat faster.
Edit to my ealier statement: I may be no Elf, but I can also use the available cover to my advantage.
Brin: Lord Caramir, not that I doubt your resolve nor your abilities, but you are far to important to Gondor to risk yourself here. I will hold. Your place is directing our main parties efforts. Brin looks obviously nervous and frightened, but is standing his ground
Caramir laughs, “You forget or don’t know, I am a younger son.”
Brin: So was your father.
Gil-Gandel has the usual priorities for archery targets: leader-types, spell-casters, missile troops, anyone else. Keeping his distance from heavily-armoured enemies, if charged by anyone lightly-armoured then he’ll hold one shot until pointblank range and then switch to swords if necessary, but will look for support if he’s in danger of being outnumbered three to one or worse.
I do hope Gil-Gandel is not going to get into any further trouble. Being rescued by a Hobbit twice in a row could be really amusing.
I’d better keep an eye on him as I’m moving around.
If “trouble” is hobbitish for “one-on-one with an orc who’s much less likely to hit me than I am him, does less damage and can take far less”, then yes, I was in deep trouble. By the more usual meaning of the word… not so much.
Seeing as everyone else is abdicating the area as quickly as they safely can, apart from yourself, I guess “trouble” will now depend on how may Orcs turn up.
Thoroncir will pick off any enemies he sees with his longbow, keeping himself between Ghan and the enemy. When any foeman gets too close for the bow, he will drop it, draw his longsword and begin swinging. “Elendil!”
More “how many Orcs can catch me after a twenty-yard start”.
Happy to report there is wireless where I am this week, though I won’t be on for many hours in the day
Not much to report… Stay back, cast Sleep or Magic Missile if necessary to save a life, but otherwise stick back and try to stay out of trouble. Recommending a fighting retreat here, and sending Folca back to warn the larger group to expect trouble and move up to assist and cover our flanks.
For the record, I have a magic amulet that allows Folca and I to share sight, so your confusion at the sequence of events earlier is well-justified and hopefully now abated.
Going to be spotty posting until Wednesday night. Thanks Glee!
It’s been my pleasure to help - thanks for trusting me.
(I hope you don’t mind me mentioning it, but how is Folca going to warn the larger group? As far as I know, none of them can speak to her…)
So the Forward is in a semi-organized retreat and the rear is in a semi-orgranized chrage as the orcs are in a downhill lope.
Malacandra pulls back to a shadowed position and Mulligan disappear low behind the rocks working on falling behind.
The retreat proves very wise, shortly after the party gets down below the small path to the right, orcs come streaming out of it.
Gil-Gandel can now make out that there is about 25 orcs coming down the main path and another dozen from the small side path. The last of the 25 has just passed where the Front Party had been. The rear most one is only 200’ or just under 7", an ideal range for bowing.
The Orcs will not catch the front of the party before they can mix in with the rear.
Ghân, you should have time once you let the dwarves and compnay pass you to turn and cast your barkskin up.
Thoroncir at what range will you stop and start shooting? 210’ is short, 420’ is medium for you.
Ghân does so.
If the attackers have a spellcaster or a Leader, Ghân will Summon Insects on them.
Otherwise, realising the terrain is not ideal for Entangle, he will still cast it a couple of times, trying to:
- stop the orcs outflanking us
- stop the orcs getting away
- worry the orcs
Hoever, if before he can cast Entangle, orcs break through, then he will defend Deor by using his blowpipe.
If there is a melee line in front of him, he will use his First Aid training and cast Cure Light Wounds.
Just wanted to remind you that Gwaelur is planning on trying to get a bolt or two off before Melee as well.
Not that you forgot, but I like to feel like I am still in the mix.
