Sleep them if possible, otherwise hide away. This should be no big deal, so keep an eye (and a hawk’s eyes) out for any additional groups.
Ghân and Fang guard Deor and Renee.
Does this count as a new day for Goodberry purposes?
What’s going on? When do we start fighting? Where is everyone? I want action, dammit!
I was waiting for some more specific orders of attack. Do the fighter charge down the mountain or is the party trying to set an ambush? bow work is out for all but Gil-Gandel and maybe Gwaelur as it is a dark night.
Well, if I can hit a couple with my xbow before the attack that might not be a bad thing.
I think an ambush is the way to go, charging in with no real plan of attack is never a good idea.
How many can Deor take out with his sleep from this range? What is the terrain like? Do we have the ability to surround them, is their a high ground for us to take? The element of surprise is probably key, so the more we can take out right away the better we are.
We could do something along the lines of:
Deor cast sleep and immediatly after Gil- Gandel and Gwaelur fire a volley aiming for those behind the orcs that have been put to sleep while Theo and Thor rush in with swords. Gwaelur will follow behind with his axe and shield while Gil continues to provide cover fire for the attackers. Brin stays with the casters to keep them safe and Mal…I don’t know, but maybe he can flank.
This is just a spitball idea, I am hoping others will get in here and modify it/point out flaws.
A faerie fire would help, but I don’t think we have any available right now. Therefore, I’m better off in short range, chopping away from the flanks.
Or, as a great ranger once said - “You point, I punch.”
Yeah, I don’t think we have many spells available to us, I think the fighters are going to have to do this mostly on our own. Though a song from Renee would be most welcome.
The longer we can put this off, the more likely I am to have spells available. Sleep, if they’re tightly packed and normal orcs, can take ten or fifteen. That said, we should absolutely take the high ground as quickly as possible.
Here’s a thought- Gil-Gandel is still effective even at night, right? He should draw them off, giving us time to prepare and take any high ground available.
Thoroncir, seeing how dark it still is and remembering the terrain from earlier, puts down his bow and draws his longsword instead.
Probably best if we wait for the orcs to reach us and then ambush them.
Renee in a break in prayers says, “I though Gil-Gandel mentioned they all have bows, can even he safely lure off 22 archers? I will work on the Song next, but it will take at least another 15 minutes, do we have that long?”
I could always engage them in witty goblin banter and lead them away from us while staying out of sight and firmly in the shadows. They may be expecting someone from the nearby colony to be looking for them, or they may not.
At least, I should be able to detain them for about 5-10 mins if I can think quickly enough on my feet. Give us enough time to set up an ambush around them or get them bunched together for Deor’s sleep spell.
Bravely spoken and a good plan. Don’t forget, I hide very well. I’ll come with you and stay nearby, not so near that I’ll give you away if I am seen but near enough to help if necessary.
Deor, complete with Sleep, will prepare to lie in ambush. He’ll ask Brin for help in concealing himself so as to be able to cast from some protection. After casting, he’ll retreat if he’s revealed his position and stay put if not.
If Brin helps conceal me, can I get a bonus on the “Hide” roll?
So Mulligan and Gil-Gandel set out to buy some time for the spell casters.
Ghân do you start memorizing Faerie Fire? I assume Entangle was first. It will be a new day for Good Berries with dawn.
Brin is annoyed as he can make out nothing.
Mulligan leads the orcs on a small and merry little distraction but the orcs spread out and start beating the bushes. Gil-Gandel fires a single shot from a different direction and takes off at a sprint away from the orcs. This gives Mulligan time to sneak away. The dodge has bought the party another 10 minutes and a little more. All spell casters should have two spells available.
Hey, good to see that the plan worked.
My eyes, while probably not as good as theirs, are probably good enough in this light.
One thing has occured though, we know there are H/Ks out here, but we don’t know what they look like. I would expect bigger, but could they just be seriously elite Orcs instead and heavily trained? :dubious:
Also, while leading them a merry dance, was I able to work out who was giving ordes in the group?
OK, I think Ghân therefore has (including unused from yesterday):
- 2*1st
- 3*2nd (+1 recovered)
- 0*3rd (+1 recovered)
So he offers to cast Faerie Fire to help the Archers, Entangle if the terrain permits and Summon Insects on any Hunter-Killer or caster.
If after that Deor, Renee and Ghân are under missile fire, he could try Obscurement.
hmm, I don’t know if losing the element of surprise was a great idea, but what is done is done.
If we can get the glee’s fire going I think we can still go ahead with the plan of Deor casting sleep followed by a quick volley of arrows (by all the avialble arches now) followed by Gwaelur and Thoroncir switching to melee while Gil and Brin (Brin does archery yes?) continuing to lay down cover fire/protect the casters.
If Gil and Mulligan can flank at the same time and attack from behind, I think we should be in good shape.
Is the terrain in good enough shape that our hose riding friends can make use of their horses? (The get a bonus for fighting on horseback right? Maybe I am remembering that incorrectly, it seems odd, but it’s how I remember it.)
If losing the element of surprise gains us 3 spells to be used, I think it was worth it.
Besides, the Orcs still don’t know our strength , but we have a good idea what their strength is. We may not surprise them completely, but we have the upper hand in knowledge.
Now all we have to do is put that advantage to good use.
NAF1138, the horses are not here unless I am forgetting something.
Mulligan is not sure who was giving the orders as no orc stood out enough in the darkness to keep track.
Ghân will only be able to Faerie Fire 3 orcs. This will help but not be huge.
You will have Moose to cause a disruption and hopefully Gwaelur.
The H/Ks are bigger, this has been mentioned, they are among the largest Uruk Hai, these orcs you fight are actually on the smaller side. They could easily be considered goblins in fact.
The orcs now make for the entrance, what is the plan people?
Fair enough. What do you think of my attack plan?
