Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game, the Second Adventure, Scouting Ered Lithui

I’ll open with Sleep on as many orcs as possible, then back away and cast Invisibility on myself. Then I’ll avoid contact with the enemy and stay back by the campsite.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Is Renee able to illuminate the enemy? I’m all in favour of the bad guys being brightly lit and our archers in the dark, but if all we have is some Faerie Fire to light a few of them, that’s better than nothing (and if I remember rightly it doesn’t hurt my star-sight). Mulligan, I suggest you and I make plenty of noise once the battle starts, so that the enemy think there is a bigger force on their flanks. Armoured warriors, drive straight into them - they’re less effective in hand to hand.

This gets a thumbs up from me.

If we can knock down several of them from the darkness, so much the better. I think it would be worth me and Gil-Gandel aiming from the vicinity of the cave mouth to try and prevent them from escaping down there. Last thing I want to do is to try and track 20 more Orcs through those tunnels.

Given their size, glad that there are no H/Ks among them.

Mulligan, I’m all for that. We should be able to use the cave’s acoustics to magnify our voices, too.

The DM tells me that Ghân has time to recover two 1st/2nd spells, so Ghân has:

 • 2*1st
 • 3*2nd (+2 recovered)
 • 0*3rd

So Ghân offers to cast Faerie Fire to help the Archers, Entangle if the terrain permits and keep Cure Light Wounds for our side.

If after that Deor, Renee and Ghân are under missile fire, he could try Obscurement.

Thoroncir is ready to use either bow (if the battlefield is lit) or sword (if not), and will keep himself between the orcs and Renee.

I’m thinking I could open with a Sleep just like we did against the orcs in our first battle, but I could sure use some help concealing myself so that the orcs don’t spot me before they get within my range. Can someone more adept at that than myself, maybe Brin or Ghan, give me a hand?

The problem is that you are the only one with Invisiblity.
If Renee had Sanctuary, that might give you a jump on the initiative…

The best I can do is:

Ghân casts Barkskin on himself now, then stands in front of Deor, ready to Faerie Fire orcs so Deor can sleep them.

Given the general position of the group, you can probably cast it from behind them while they are being distracted by other party members.

If we get pushed back into the caves, they will be in for a treat. Oil + Spiderwebs should make a nice burning problem for them to try and get through.

Renee asks Gil-Gandel to quickly give her one arrow, she wants to try a trick she heard of for night attacks. She takes out a spare cloak and wraps the arrow, she then carefully cast the Light spell on it and completes the wrapping.

She explains, “This spell will last for about 80 minutes and cast light in a 60’ diameter globe. Chose a wise moment to use it to help the rest of our archers. I hope it works as expected, I have never used it light this before.”

Thank you, Renee, I understand perfectly. I’ll try to find something close by the enemy that I can shoot it into - a tree would be ideal - so that they can’t just toss it away or shoot it back.

I shot an arrow in the air
It fell to earth I know not where
Despite the Light I lost the flight
…and then all the orcs shot me.

So what is the plan, most of the party is on a good overlook about 100’ from the cave entrance. The orcs are now approaching said entrance, but warily do the the stray voice and the stray arrow. They all have their bows at the ready.

Renee has used one of her four spells and has Cure Light memorized along with Light and Purify Food & Water (not used from yesterday).

I still think my plan is a good one, and now there is more detail.

Start with the lights (Gil and Ghan) then Deor hits the orcs with a sleep while everyone who has a bow fires a volley, and Mulligan flanks with Theogrim.

Thoroncir and Gwaelur then head in with Melee weapons meeting up with the flanking Theo who goes in for melee while Mulligan sneek attacks and fires his sling keeping the orcs confused.

Brin watches out for the spellcasters and Gil lays down some cover fire from the mouth of the cave where they make enough noise to further confuse the orcs and lead them to believe that there are more of us than there really are.

If Renee was able to get that song working so we have bonuses that would be great.

Renee does not have the Song, she went for Light instead.

Oh well, we are probably better off with the light. I wasn’t sure if she was able to get both or not.

So no song, but I still think the above plan is good even without it.

Well lets get a few more to check in and maybe we can play this out. Sorry for the delays.

Oh yeah. God lord don’t EVER go by my plans without running it by someone else first, especially when I am making suggestions for other players characters. I really don’t know what I am doing and am just making this up as I go. No joke or sarcasm intended.

Plan seems reasonable to me.

Thoroncir, we will need you in melee, instead of protecting the MU’s (Renee in particular, don’t worry she can always lay hands on later).

I like it. Put me down as in favor.
