Middle Earth FA63 D&D Game, the Second Adventure, Scouting Ered Lithui

Gwaelur is heading for the Shaman still. It’s been a while since he has gotten to take down a Big Bad.

Wow, those little glass bombs are great.

Is the smoke spreading inside the dome as well?

You appear to be witnessing an unexpected side affect. The smoke appears to be spread over the surphase of the spell the Shaman has up.

**Gwaelur ** needs to end 3 orc lives first.

I’ll post the next round soonish, time permitting.

Well sure, I thought that was assumed. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think I will keep an eye on Thoroncir keeping an eye on Renee.

He is going to get himself in to trouble if he keeps doing that. :dubious:

Moose charges through the smoky curtain. He hits the first warg rider and stomps the warg. The rider flies to the fround and the warg is injured. A sheet of flame strikes down on Moose for 33 points for 42 total of damage to Moose. It also kills the warg.

Theogrim follows Moose and impales the first orc in Robes he sees and has the satisfaction of hit dying and retrieving his lance. The warg attacks his horse for 5 points.

Captain Helton who lost his lance in his lance victim, swings his long sword on another orc. He hits.

The Rangers are winning the arrow fight with the Uruk-Hai archers though many riders have dropped. Riglo sword makes short work of a large archer and 2 other Uruk-Hai fighters nearby. The cavalry squad that followed him drives through the hole and through the wall of smoke. This causes much confusion among the warg riders.

Gil-Gandel rides into the path left by Moose and company while shooting orcs nearby. He drops two more.

Thoroncir chargers through and skewers another Uruk, this time losing his lance but the Uruk is in bad shape.

Gwaelur drops two more orcs and Mulligan backstabs the third successfully. Gwaelur barely pauses, says thank you and charges for the orcs, looking for the quickest way into the smoke.

Brin steps up and fires two shots and a hunter killer. Both hit killing it. He takes a shot for 13 points.

Many of the enemy orcs turn to make a formation against the charging Green Orcs. This makes the cavalry’s job simpler.

Ghân cautiously moves forward looking for where he is needed most. Not seeing a good spell opportunity he takes two shots with blowgun. He hits once and the orc is paralyzed. Fang stays low.

Deor casts his invisibility leaving no more spells. Folca is scanning for reinforcements and sees none so far.

Having lost his lance, the Sea-Knight draws his longsword and has at the orcs around him.

GM, as in the LOTR movies, do we have [ahistorical] stirrups and spurs?

Theogrim notices that somehow even this far from her, he can hear Renee’s song. He charges at the Shaman on the huge Warg. He hits the Warg for 34 points and it lives. He notices that 8 of the wargs are double their normal size.

Moose charges the leader’s warg and hits it hard, knocking it over. The Shaman barely jumps clear and it takes a bit to steady himself. Captain Helton has engaged another warg rider and misses twice. The warg rider hits him and the warg bites his horse.

Thoroncir cries, “Elendil! Elendil! Onward for Gondor and Elendil” and with long sword out charges a lesser shaman that appears to be in mid-casting. His horse barrels into the warg and he hits the Shaman for 11.

Gil-Gandel gets within the circle and immediately fires at point blank range at the head Shaman relying on Cúran to avoid danger. He hits the Shaman 3 times for a total of 22 points of damage.

100 orcs and Uruk-Hai charge the Green Orcs. The Green Orcs stop and fire a volley of 120 arrows. Most miss, but it causes much confusion and a dozen orcs drop. The Green Orcs then prepare themselves with short swords, axes and spears.

Brin targets another hunter killer that is already injured. He hits only once and it survives.

Mulligan sees a small pocket of 3 hunter killers with a good defense around them and he lobs smoke bomb at them, ruining their shots.

Gwaelur races through the battle field and gets into the circle in time to attack a huge warg that was closing in on Gil-Gandel despite Cúran best dodging and dancing. Gwaelur hits with ax and shield for 22 and draws its attack. It snaps at him but can find no purchase.

Riglo has entered the circle. He slices the other lesser shaman in half and kicks the warg in the nose. As the warg goes to bite him, he jabs with the blade of Gondolin right through its foul mouth and drives it and the warg into the ground.

The Lancers are harrying the wargs as four units of 3 on 1. However one warg bites through the neck of a horse, as the blood goes gushing out, the warg is stabbed repeatedly.

Deor stays low, scanning for danger to friends.

Ghân sees the Shaman through the clearing smoke and casts a heat metal on him and two of the other Warg riders.

Many Uruk-Hai run the Shaman’s defense. One hits Moose for another 6 for 48 total.
Thoroncir is bit on the leg by a Warg for 7.
An arrow hits Gwaelur in the back for 9 but he actually laughs off the poison.

Several riders and horse drop, but far more orcs do. The battle is going well, but the toll this time will be severe.

Of course you have stirrups, Bilbo had a clock and matches.

Ghân is going to be very cautious. He can probably protect Renee if he stays near Fang, but has no chance of helping Moose (who is doing what he enjoys most, even if it kills him).
Certainly until the green-clad orcs have shown they are sticking to their bargain, Ghân is staying back.

Ghân, go and help Moose if you can, he is going to need it.

Brin and I should hopefully be able to keep Renee safe. I think Thoroncir would be upset if we let her get hurt.

Yes, Moose is plainly having the time of his life at the moment but he’s taking damage too. Trouble is that he’s in the thick of the fray and that’s not a good place for Ghân. The best thing for all of us is if we can convince the enemy to break and run. I’ll keep firing at the shaman, he may well be able to laugh off a Heat Metal judging by what he’s tossing around at the moment.

Unfortunately:

  • Ghân is not equipped to face several orcs hitting him (and can’t cast whilst being hit anyway)
  • Ghân is carrying over 200 Goodberries, which are certainly going to be needed at the end
  • Moose is just someone who travels with Ghân, whereas Fang is Ghân’s trusted companion

I don’t mean to be offensive  , but you could try sneaking up to Moose and slapping 8 Goodberries on him (I really don’t recommend it, but your chances are honestly better than mine)

You really know how to get me interested don’t you. Set me an impossible challenge.

It would also get me inside that dome as well. Hmmmm.

Honestly I think it’s mayhem out there with orc bodyguards, Hunter-Killers and Shamans.
Moose would happily die fighting orcs - that’s his business.
Ghân would never get a spell off (when casting = no shield, no dexterity and +4 to be hit).
I can’t suggest it would be good for anyone to go in, but I salute Moose’s unthinking bravery.

Agreed, Ghan shouldn’t venture into the maelstrom. Far too dangerous for him, and not where his skills are most needed.

Are wargs venomous? In the movies they had a certain reptilian look. In any event, Thoroncir’s wound probably could turn septic if not treated. But with Renee and Ghan close at hand, he’s not worried.

GM, great battle description! I could see it all in my mind as I read. Good, clean, bloodthirsty fun.

Thoroncir will spur his warhorse on and finish the lesser shaman, hacking him to the ground, then turn to the next important target of opportunity. If he notices in the melee that any of his brave comrades need help, he’ll ride at once to their assistance.

Much as I fear for Moose’s well-being, I’m hesitant to venture into the fray, even Invisible, for fear of my life. However, I believe I can be helpful by running around the edges of the battle, healing fallen riders and horses with the eight Goodberries that I’m carrying.

That’s much better (and safer) than running off!

Remember that you can only use a maximum of 8 Goodberries on each injury.
Also that Ghân has a couple of hundred left, so you can get refills from him too.

The overall numbers have evened up with the arrival of the Green Orcs. The allies actually appear to have the numerical advantage in fact. Many more lancers are now in the inner circle where the Uruk-Hai are trying to defend the warg riders and Shaman.

In the collision of the orcs many die on both sides and the fighting is intense.

Many of the smaller orcs (snaga) have had a catastrophic failure of morale and are fleeing the battle. At least 30 are running in many directions.

Moose batters the warg with his antlers and hooves, the warg bites him for another 12 bringing him to 60 points of damage.

Thoroncir grabs a lance sticking up out of a dead warg and charges right at the Shaman, he hits and does 16 to him. The Shaman swings his staff hard at Thoroncir and hits for 7 points (14 total) and Thoroncir is stunned for the next round. His horse rides out of the battle.

Riglo is chopping down Uruk-Hai and seemingly enjoying himself. This man is a grade ‘A’ orc slaying machine. He might be bleeding, but it is hard to tell from all the blood and gore on him.

The Rangers are actually do a slow advance, still firing arrows. Orcs drop nearly one per arrow.
Brin kills two more orcs.

Deor gets to a downed man and feeds him 3 berries and orders him to crawl over to where Renee is. He then catches up to Ghân and gets a small supply of berries. I hope 48 are reasonable.

Ghân sees an opportunity to save some lives and begins quickly attending to the fallen riders and horses. Using bandages, berries and poultices and moving on quickly. Fang guards him throughout this.

Gil-Gandel shoots the injured minor Shaman that Thoroncir had already injured; disrupting his spell and then a lancer makes and end of him. Gil-Gandel’s next two shots hit the main Shaman for another 13 points.

The Shaman appears to be fumbling with a potion as Gwaelur appears in front of him and swings hard with both Axe and Shield. The Axe hits for 15 but the shield misses.

Theogrim had circled for another charge and hits the Shaman in the back. The Shaman dies!

All the wargs return to normal size and the shimmering shield drops.

A lancer finishes off the Shaman’s larger warg.

The main battle is nearly won.

Thoroncir is stunned but still mounted?

As soon as he regains his wits he’ll pull hard on the reins, turn around and return to the fray. He’ll grab another lance if he sees one available, but otherwise continue to lay about with his longsword. Elendil!

Rally everyone for a general charge, leaving the enemy room to break and run. Gwaelur and Theogrim are together, that’ll make an excellent assembly point. I’ll cross over to them, ululating something appropriate.
