Middle Earth FA64 D&D Game: Sixth Adventure - Harrying Harad by Sea

Eagle Ghân successfully drops a pair of firebombs on the aftcastle of the 2nd galley. He is rewarded with flames firing up and two men running and diving off the boat in the sea. He pulls off fast and returns to The Elendil where they have another pair ready.

As The Elendil flies past the Galley 3 on a hard angle for Galley 4, the crew lets loose with 6 ballista and dozens of fire arrows and several crossbow bolts. Deor has his Golden Brazier going and is able to thus cast his fireball to a range of 40” (1200’), he catches the catapult and its crew and supply of pitch in the 2” radius globe and the Galley has flames leaping from it. Screams are heard. It looks bad. Gil-Gandel knows he put his third arrows thorough someone giving commands near the bow.

The Elendil races on to Galley #4, “Bucket crew, give the helms orders and get #5.”

The Bucket Leader barks out several orders, Binton appears to be assisting by guiding the winds, soon port trebuchet launches its odd looking giant wooden bullet, it impacts directly onto the deck of galley #5 and a huge burst of wooden splinters and metal shot fly into the air. Men are injured everywhere on the deck. The Bucket leader orders the helm to port and lets fly starboard trebuchet. He is rewarded with a direct hit on the catapult and splinters and metal shot flying.

Captain Langdon orders, “Hard to starboard, prepare to board to the port side, all hands prepare to board. Commander, keep you top Lt and best horseman in reserve. Ghân can you give a gift to Galley #5 please. Deor, hold fire unless you see a stray galley come into your range, go for the catapults again if so.”

Thoroncir races to lead the boarding party with Hraedsig close behind, 4 sailors escort the Dwarves to a special part of the port railing, they see a 25’ ramp is rigged and ready to lower. It has hooks and rails for easy crossing. We send you two over it first, pretend it is tunnel fighting and just force open an area for men to follow and support you. You will be leading the heavy infantry over.

As the boats close in an exchange of arrows fly, the galley has pulled in their sweeps at least.

Arrows and bolts fly from both ships, The Elendil has the far large numbers and wins the exchange. Gilraen is now in action, dodging to men that went down. Deor sees a good opportunity to cast a sleep where 20 men are preparing to swing from the yard arms to the deck of the galley. He sleeps 8 of the awaiting defenders.

Grappling hooks fly, men swing over, the boats briefly collide port side to port side and the three boarding ramps are lowered. Men pour across to the smaller galley. All is chaos. There appear to be 60 men topsides and must be a few dozen more below. On the forward most ramp leading to the aft of the galley, Thoroncir and Hraedsig lead the way across, amidships Bitur and Gwaelur make their introductions with ax and shield. To the rear of the lower deck, a grizzled infantry Sgt leads. Gil-Gandel sees he is find moving to the portside aft mast stay. Rorimac follows behind the Dwarves. Mulligan heads over invisibly to cause some havoc.

As all of this is happening the fast escorts race past #3 firing flame arrows and bolts, they are followed on each side by transports #2 & #3.

Ghân will carry out his orders to firebomb Galley #5.
(He considers getting Windwing to act as a dummy firebomber, but dismisses the idea.)

Fang, Anca and Windwing are guarding Deor and Gilraen.

“Come, men, come!” Sir Thoroncir calls, raising his longsword high before he, Hraedsig and the other knights pound across the ramp to the enemy ship. "Let our foes learn the folly of attacking the King’s ships unprovoked, painful though the lesson will be for them. Onward, men! Elendil!"

Once aboard the strangers’ vessel, the Sea-knight lays about him with his longsword Cirist, “Ship-blade,” glad of the company of his Rohirric friend Hraedsig, and even gladder to be in battle on the high seas once more after too long.

Cry havoc and let slip the hobbits of war

Does Mulligan have any specific instructions for his DM?

The slightest smile appears on Hraedsig’s face as hew hews about with sword and shield. It is indeed a good feeling to fight the good fight in the open air (even if the "ground’ does roll under your feet!)

Sure, concentrate on taking out magic users and leaders either injured/paralysed/unconcious/dead which ever is easiest.

Inconvenience any missile troops they have using smoke bombs or fire.

Lock doors and barricade entrances to prevent more troops from appearing.

A loud blast on Glinras giving allies a +1 to hit & saves. The area is a base 6” radius to hearten all the nearby Gondoreans, and I will look for premium targets for arrow-fire now - such as skilled enemy sharpshooters, ballista crew, spellcasters or officer types. Once the horn blast has gone off I will start up the bardic poetics routine as well, which will require two full rounds to come into effect and will then be worth an extra +1 to hit and 10% morale (or however you play) it for the next ten rounds following, and still allows me to shoot or melee normally while waxing lyrical, versifying extemporaneously on the beauty of the White City and the valour of her troops.

6 minutes into the ship to ship battle.

Galley #1: solid hit that hits amidships and sends huge splinters flying and a strike to port side forward. The hull is staved and the galley is taking on water. It was left to flounder for now.
Galley #2: Fire bombed on aftcastle early then flame arrowed by escort and now being grappled by Transports #9 and #10
Galley #3: Fireball has destroyed catapult and lit forecastle, dozens of fire arrows on the ship and being boarded by Transports #2 & #3 in the chaos.
Galley #4: The Elendil has boarding fast and hard with over 100 men and most of the party.
Galley #5: Trebuchet loads have smashed the catapult and partially wrecked the main deck. 6 firebombs are wreaking havoc on the aftcastle.
Galley #6: Closing in on the Elendil to the stern
Galley #7: Closing in on the Elendil to the stern
Galley #8: Closing in on the Elendil but cutting to the bow side.

The combat is extremely chaotic and in it the party loses track of the rest of the battle. Ghân makes several more bombing runs on #5 until the Captain asks him to bomb Galley#8. The fast escorts turn on Galley #2 and launch dozens of fire arrows and ballista bolts. Escort #2 has taken some sail damage and has several fires; they will have to pull out of battle for damage control and may need help.

Transports #9 and #10 are grappling Galley #2 and preparing to board in force.

The Elendil raises the ramps and cuts lines and casts off; preparing to go after Galleys 6, 7 & 8. This separates the party of course.
Does Gil-Gandel stay on the Elendil or switch to the Galley?

On the deck of Galley #4 the battle is going very well. Better numbers, better armor and the heavy hitters in Thoroncir, Hraedsig, Gwaelur and Bitur. The archery support of Gil-Gandel from the Elendil and Rorimac behind the Dwarven area is helpful. Mulligan has backstabbed the helmsman and someone giving orders so far and both are dead. This is causing a large scare on the stern of the galley. She has also slyly secured the hatch from below in this area.

Deor just waits for now to save spells?

Sir Thoroncir, joyous in battle, hacks away at any foe who dares approach.

What do our opponents look like? Pale skin, dark, tall, short, fat, skinny, etc.? Any distinctive armor, helms, shields, clothing or insignia? Does their speech sound at all familiar?

You know, there is nothing like a little bit of exercise to stop one feeling so seasick.

The opponents are on the shorter side, in the 5’2” to 5’10” range. They are mostly fairly fit to thin looking. They appear to be more olive skinned and run mainly to brown and black hair. So far their speech is not familiar. Not the southron that Thoroncir has heard before.

They have only leather armor but dyed with fanciful and unique images. Many have leather caps on too and their only shields are wooden ones. They tend to short swords of an unusual make and many have scimitars that the Corsairs favored. They employ bows that you would consider short and many crossbows. They did start with spears and pikes to try and repel boards, but the heavy Gondorian and Dwarven armor foiled this plan.

Rorimac continues firing from his position at the opponents but begins to move round to give himself a better position to fire in.

Mulligan will loop a rope round the tiller and drag it to one side forcing the ship to move away from the Elendil and giving it room to engage the other vessels.

I will stay on the Elendil and look for key targets on the other galleys. I assume a pitched battle is not the best time to try the bardic charm, otherwise it would be a good time to use it, with a lot of low-level opponents in range once the ships close. But I can continue inspiring the Elendil’s crew.

I’ll hold off for the moment to save spells, but if an enemy galley gets too close to the Elendil and tries to board her, I’ll knock them out with a Fireball. Except, of course, that I’d really like to get a Shield cast; all these projectiles make me nervous. Other than that, I’ll stay near Fang and Anca, and instruct Folca to get well above bowshot and to keep an eye out behind me, so that I don’t get blindsided.

To make the battle a little easier to understand here is a quick map of it.
The white sail galleys (G1-G8) are the enemies and red sails (T2-T10) are Gondor. E1 to E4 are the fast escorts. Fire and smoke and the gaping hole in G1 are roughly shown.

Next few rounds probably won’t be posted until tomorrow.

Onboard Galley # 4 Sir Thoroncir leads his men to the stern with little resistance; Hraedsig and he face no foes of equal skill after Mulligan stabbed a tough looking but under-armored fellow in the back that tried to take Thoroncir from the left flank and did 9 points for 15 points total… Hraedsig has taken 2 points .

Bitur and Gwaelur have fought their way below, with Gwaelur launching himself down below on top of two of the enemy men. Nothing has been able to hit Bitur in his armor yet and Gwaelur has taken a single bolt for 5 points. Rorimac remains on deck and has been able to stay back and act as an archer. Transport #5 comes up along the luffing, listless Galley #4 and sends another 40 men across to help and a prize crew behind them.

The Elendil picks up speed and makes hard for Galley #8. Port Trebuchet misses but starboard does strike the forecastle. The catapult hit The Elendil near the forward mast and there is fire-fighting required. Captain Langdon calls for the cavalry to be ready for ramming and boarding. Galley #6 is coming up fast but misses at long range, when it gets within 40” Deor drops a fireball on its catapult deck and the galley deck explodes and the ship’s bow appears to be taking on water fast.

Ghân drops his bombs on the helm area of #8 successfully and returns to see The Elendil on fire.

If poissible, Hraedsig hurries over to where thew new men from #5 are coming aboard, to try to catch them early before they are completely set on board.

Hraedsig starts to head over to the boarding area and realizes the troops are men of Gondor. The new boat is part of the fleet. He ends up leading a half dozen men over to aid and protect the boarding.

Hraedsig still has a lot to learn about sea combat. :smack:
