Middle Earth FA64 D&D Game: Sixth Adventure - Harrying Harad by Sea

Rorimac: I think there are certain people in the party who would be fine for such a mission and some who would not be. As I said, it depends on what you want us to do?

Sir Thoroncir has never been invisible before, either, but is willing to try it if it would be helpful. He can leave his armor behind and just carry his longsword and shield, if necessary. Does Gilraen want to emulate her cat and be invisible for awhile, too?

Ideally, the General would like your group to get over the wall or through it and then casue trouble inside to disrupt things. He is unsure of your abilities but thought you had a Wizard that could turn people invisible. What do you suggest?

I can indeed- I can turn as many as eight people invisible this evening*, then as many as three easily or six with significant effort tomorrow, though doing so tomorrow will count against my daily spell limit in the fight. Mulligan has her ring, which gives a more potent form of invisibility than my own; I’d suggest Rorimac for sure and Gil-Gandel as well. Ghan-buri-Ghan in particular might be a good choice, as his Produce Fire would make quite a distraction if applied to a significant building. I might come too; since spellcasting always negates invisibility, I’ll nip down to my alchemical supplies and see if I can’t produce a good sleeping draught or some bottled flame of some kind. Although if I can make something of the sort, I’ll probably just send it with one of you. All the rest of our troops would seem to be ill-suited for a stealth mission. I could of course turn them invisible anyway, which might give them a small advantage; a clanking invisible Dwarf would be quite stealthy if he’s amongst other noisy fighters, and he might be able to open with a decisive killing blow.

*I’ve lost track- is this the same day as the naval battle? If so, then I’m two spells lower and the limit is six.

Mulligan: Hmm, the problems that can occur inside a small port being invisible.

Buildings on fire
Ships made unusable
Chain of command neutralised
The gates opened
Soldiers locked in barracks

Shall I continue?

I can probably cause trouble, all right. I am naturally stealthier than most especially if there is any natural cover - some large gardens or parkland would be fun, although I don’t expect to find much in that way unless someone owns a fat slice of private land. I can get about the place quickly and should be able to run from most of what might trouble me.

Ghân can see several problems with the entire party being Invisible:

 • we can’t see each other (how can we keep together? how can we move swiftly? how do we go through doors? how do we change plans?)
 • if one of us gets separated / falls down a pit / gets paralysed … the others won’t know
 • anyone in metal armour is going to alert defenders
 • the spell wears off once you attack someone

As Rorimac says, some are better suited to this mission than others.
Presumably the Scouts could move Stealthily, Deor could go Invisible and Ghan could shapechange.

DM, if a Scout is successfully hiding in shadows, could Ghân benefit from that by riding on their shoulder?

Bitur could cause all sorts of mayhem while invisible. But anything he does can’t rely on being sneaky. It’s still will be rather disconcerting to hear someone clanking around in full plate causing mayhem.

Rorimac: How about a few of us go in stealthily, take a look around and then report back on what we have found.

After that we may be able to get the rest of the party in and cause more problems that way.

If time permits, Thoroncir believes that is a wise plan.

Giving each invisible scout specific destinations or goals and a predetermined spot to meet after scouting might help with some of the issues that Ghan raises.

I won’t be going in with the raiding team, though; I don’t think that I have much to add, since I can’t cast spells without ruining my Invisibility. I’ll prepare a number of sleeping potions and any other alchemical goodies I can manage this evening for our scouts. During the fight tomorrow I’ll stay on board the Elendil, much as the rocking of this infernal craft irks me, and stay by Captain Langdon as a liason with the raiding party; Ghan can communicate with Folca, and I’m always in contact with her. This will also allow me to work with Langdon so that we can coordinate my Fireballs so that we can endanger neither the party nor the Sea Knights.

One more opportunity for some sneaky, sneaky, sneaking where heavy armor might actually be a benefit- I can cast Water Breathing on a couple of our warriors and let them actually assault the port from below, wading ashore as a surprise, swarming aboard a ship, or climbing onto a dock or pier. We know that our gallant Acting Captain Thoroncir can use his seal form to keep them in communication with the rest of the strike force. Water Breathing might be useful as a way to get our scouts into the port town, too- is it walled? In any case, if we do decide to use Water Breathing and allow anyone to walk or swim ashore, we should check out the bottom of the ocean in this area- is it muddy or rocky, sandy or silty, or even inhabited?

I would also like to emphasize that figuring out who is to be Invisible tonight, rather than tomorrow, will retain me an extra 3rd level spell slot because I won’t need to load Invisibility 10’ Radius.

I’d also like to note that I recognize that the Water Breathing plan is a little out there, and I post it partly as a suggestion and partly as role-playing. Deor would definitely suggest throw this out there in a brainstorming session. Also, I’m taking my “days at sea” set of spells tomorrow morning.

Hraedsig agrees with Rorimac and Thoroncir that a smaller, stealthy group can take advantage of invisibility to prepare the way for the rest of us. Perhaps we can hide and wait somewhere just on shore, ready to run in and cause havoc at a given signal?

Ghân can also cast Waterbreathing (several times a day ) and likes Deor’s idea that the Fighters stay in their armour, but can retreat underwater.

Let’s see how many of us could go in undetected and still stay in communication:

 • Deor can be Invisible and lend Invisible Folca to someone else (so Deor knows exactly where they are)

 • Ghan can shapechange (into Pinemartin or Gecko) and ride on a shoulder

 • our Scouts are extremely good at **Hide in Shadows **and Move Silently. They can also be kept under observation by another member of the party, so they know where they are (this could be Folca instead of the above)

Mulligan can do her impression of a strobe light

Mulligan: As a small port, does it have a wall all the way round it, is there access along the coast, how many jetties does it have or is it a sea wall to be berthed against.

Rorimac: I wonder if we can smuggle the others and hide them somewhere in the city until the attack comes and then cause havoc from the inside?

Bitur would be fine with an (under-the-)sea approach. But we would need to know how solid the seabed is. Getting stuck in the muck wouldn’t be very fun.

Captain Langdon is happy to leave the details to you but reminds you to plan for a beach landing first that will probably be opposed and then the storming of the walled port.

Hraedsig discusses with Thoroncir: “In terms of the beach landing, I’d be honored to lead the charge on Windfoot. We’ll soften them up for the ground troops for sure!”

I’m ready Captain Langdon. I have never stormed a beach before, it should be fun.

How about putting us down a couple of leagues away and letting us scope out the town first, before we get to the storming of the beach?

If there’s no particularly pressing deadline, that seems the better approach to Sir Thoroncir.
