Once I told Poster M about something Poster Y says they told to Poster F. Then Poster M told Poster R what I said and Poster R spoke to Poster J and claimed I said something entirely different about Poster V. I told Poster T about this but they just said they talked to Poster L and Poster K and both of them said they heard the same thing from Poster G but they knew it was really Poster W who said those things. Who should I believe here?
You should believe the guy who advises you to never use PMs. They make things chaotic when you use them.

Although it should noted that there are still plagiarism and copyright considerations. Claiming something sent to you as being created by you is obviously unethical. Private communications are automatically protected by copyright, so we shouldn’t be reposting the entirety of someone else’s work. Fair use, especially for critique or satire can allow for a lot, though.

No, we’re not. This thread was created by a mod as a spin-off from the “What were you thinking?” thread. It wasn’t a thread created to pit Beck. It was undoubtedly created with the best intentions to keep from cluttering the other thread, but making it its own thread has had the unintended side effect of hugely increasing the profile of this particular pile-on.
I’m sure you’re genuinely trying to be helpful, but you’re a pretty smart guy and it surprises me that you apparently don’t see how arrogant and pompous that whole post sounds, as if Beck was a small child and not a functional adult with her own beliefs and values informed by lived experiences that you haven’t had and have no business being judgmental about. You’re entitled to disagree with her, but not to give a lecture on character improvement to an adult who may well have more wisdom than you, and certainly a lot more humility.

Yep, I never expected this to happen. I just wanted the Beck, back and forth out of the thread I followed. The only two pit thread I generally read are the Troll thread and What were you THINKING?. This came from the second. I thought it was a mild thing.

As a practical matter this is true, and in fact one of the most sensible things I was taught in grad school was “assume every single thing you write will eventually be made public.” I tried to remember that whenever I was tempted to write a “private” email at work.
Still, I would hope for better behavior from people. A lot of things that are unseemly aren’t literally against the rules.

IIRC, part of the terms and agreement was that we automatically transfer all copyright to TPTB so theoretically they can make a book out of our threads and make a mint. I think PMs fall under that as well so the owners of SD are the ones to enforce any copyright and unlike trademarks, there is no requirement to do so.
I like Beck’s threads for the most part. They’re light and lighthearted and generally inoffensive. I’ll often pop into them just to read the OP in the same way I might flip the paper over to read Peanuts.
That’s why it’s depressing that, over the last few years, I’ve found myself more and more thinking “classic Beck” when she comes into other posters’ threads with her particular brand of folksy judgement. I recall being very dismayed by her attitude in the Panera charged lemonade thread.
Regarding this specific incident: judging Tim Walz on his looks was silly, but whatever. It was the digital ink spilled to justify it and attack everybody else instead of just saying “yes, withdrawn, that was a silly thing to say” that made me sigh and think classic Beck.
I guess that makes me one of the mean nasty haters who is just out to get the nicest niciest lady these boards have ever seen. Because there are only two sides, right? The fans and the people who hate her because they’re jealous or whatever?
