Mild Pitting of Beck

But that thread wasn’t the right place for that fight. This was a perfect opportunity for a regular poster to create a spin-off thread, as @What_Exit routinely requests in p&e.

I don’t mind most of Beck’s posts at all. However, she does have one minor quirk that peeves a bit, which is that she will often answer a question in a way that isn’t what the question was about at all.

For instance - to cite a risque example - there was the thread where a Doper was asking about whether it was possible that a woman could be so large that she couldn’t have sex in one particular position and could only have it in another. To which Beck replied that she knew of large women who’d had kids.

That wasn’t what the OP was asking. He wasn’t asking “Is it impossible for huge women to have sex in any position?” He was asking, “Is it possible that huge women would find it impossible to have sex in one particular position?” But when other Dopers pointed this out to Beck, she doubled down.

That was just one example. There are others.

I agree.

A blog is a great idea.

She needs the attention, and likes being a martyr.

Not a bad, bad, bad idea? (Sorry.)

The number of mean-spirited, spiteful comments in this thread is embarrassing and pathetic. Yes, Beck posts a lot of mundane, folksy content. Who cares? She’s not mean-spirited, she’s not attacking you. Of yeah, I forgot, this forum is too high minded for stuff like that. We totally need yet another 3000+ post thread on how much of shithead Trump is, because we totally don’t have enough of those. Grow the fuck up.

Seriously, she needs a blog. For heaven’s sake, she names her posts after herself. Who does that? Someone who needs a blog. She’d have lots of followers. Where does one go to start a blog?

You. Are getting weird here.
Uh oh, am I in trouble for commenting on wolvie instead of beck?
I’m hijacking.

That was funny as hell.

That’s not what people were complaining about. Your comment is about as accurate as me saying that people are gently and caringly asking her to stop hijacking a thread with misinformed nonsense (which is also a mischaracterization).

Same. Also, can’t believe anyone would in a million years criticize a casserole recipe as being unoriginal. And amp it up to a billion years for a fucking TATER TOT casserole. This is the shit broke young people have made since tots were invented. I hope Walz doesn’t post a ramen & hot dog recipe.

I think it’s just fine and dandy that Beck has a fan club. Certain people like certain of her posts - hooray for her!

But to pretend that Beck is never uncivil, when she tells people to “shut up” in the Politics & Elections forum and in the In My Humble Opinion forum is ridiculous.

Of course, it is perfectly cromulent for her to call another poster a “jerk” while telling them to shut up as long as she’s in the Pit, and a good thing, too, because she did.

She can certainly be condescending, by telling someone to “calm down” in IMHO. (She got a mod note for that, I see.)

And she does seem to embrace the concept that other people (men, in this post) tell her she shouldn’t have an opinion. I’m not sure that’s the case, actually.

And as long as I’m linking to that "how do we feel about teachers fired for posting homemade porn? thread, I think it is a great example of why some people think of Beck as crotchety and - I’ll borrow the word @We_re_wolves_not_werewolves used for some of the rest of us - “mean-spirited.” She flounces and returns at least twice in that thread. (Why bother?)

Her point of view in that teacher porn thread, to which she is absolutely entitled (and I don’t think anyone would say she isn’t) is, to those of us with a different world view, very judgmental toward teachers and utterly lacking in compassion. She also tells us at one point that the thread should be closed (well, she’s had HER say, so what could possibly be left?)

Finally, this thread is the poster child for Beck’s MO. The topic is about the approrpriateness of thread-splitting, but Beck jumps in immediately to complain “I have never been criticized in all my years as much as I have on this board.” Okay, that is unfortunate, but that’s not what the thread was about.

Honestly, I don’t care at all if Beck wants to be folksy, hold opinions (even mean-spirited ones) that are contrary what many of us believe, if she pushes buttons so that she becomes the focus of many threads she enters, or even if she’s rude or belligerent (while not running afoul of the rules, of course). I’m all for crusty, curmudgeonly posters! Beck can be very witty and plenty of fun, anyway.

I just wish that (a) we didn’t have to have these conversations where people treat her like a maligned saint (she is NOT a saint!); and (b) she’d cheerfully accept the mantle of sometimes-contrary poster. Nothing wrong with that, unless you insist you’re always sweet when you aren’t.

Well put.

Blogs are even more a thing of the past than message boards like this one. I’ve thought of setting up a blog, but no one reads blogs any more.

Daaaaamn! You brought RECEIPTS!

I’m sure a teacher on onlyfans is the root of the problem. Fire her.

My issue is that when Beck is wrong and almost every one in the thread says that - and this message group can’t get 90% of the members to agree that baby ducks are cute - she doubles-down then tries to play the victim and bug out. There was one thread where someone not Beck was being an idiot and everyone in the thread was gladly telling him that. Beck came in and explained that we are all aholes that like to pile on people that have an opinion.

Ha, well put.

I know that’s not what people are complaining about, but character references are valid before a court.

She is folksy… like a neighbor if I had a house along a lake. Do I like her politics? No (and if she put up Rump signs facing my property I’d be pissed). Would I hang out & do group BBQ and maybe celebrate with food “It’s nice weather day” and “Holy Smoke the Peppers and Tomatoes are Good This Year” day? Sure! I could show her how I make salsa out of apples. Honestly? I think we’d get along.

I guess the question comes down to ‘do rich people cook’ and ‘do rich people plagiarize recipes’. Surprisingly, sometimes the answer is both ‘yes’ and ‘yes’. I’m going to pick as an example someone I personally hate (because he has personally stolen from me) Stephen Colbert. Does he cook? Yes. Ole Daddy Warbucks could just sit on Upper Mountain and expect to be served by Jeeves the Butler… but Vulcan-ear does go crazy in his kitchen on occasion. Sometimes he even shares with neighbors (so I’ve heard).

Recently he came out with a cookbook. Did he write it? Are all the recipes in it his? Probably not. He steals comedy as his own, why wouldn’t he steal recipes? But he does cook. Does he ‘look like he cooks’? That’s a stretch. And I’ve seen excellent chefs who have been thin, fat, tall, short, handsome and goons. Talent lands in the most remarkably odd spots.

If politics has to come into play, does anyone here think Felon34 can boil an egg?
Do any of you think JD Pants can cook anything besides burned steak on a grill?

There we go, non-issue… and if we’re going to match lies, hasn’t Rump told over 14,000 lies…? ( I lost track; that number is a few years old. )

PS- One of the main reasons that I hate Taylor Tomlinson is that she’s one of Colbert’s crime family Capos and he is the executive producer (and chief financier) of ‘AFTER MIDNIGHT’. Its a nice way to launder money based on comedy he’s stolen over the years, if you can get it. He can suck regular income out of it, like an annuity, after he retires from The Late Show.

That’s just something to think about every time a hurricane nearly swamps his SC yacht.

But (it’s my understanding) that with a blog, one needs build a reader base from scratch. The Dope is a ready-made reader base. All I have to do is show up and post for while until there are enough people who tolerate me that I’ll have a party of defenders when I’m criticized for acting like the SDMB is my blog.

I’d just like to make it clear that I’m NOT intimating that Ms Dawrek became a Doper with this goal in mind; I’m just saying that it’s an argument for not going to the trouble of starting a blog.
