Hey, any Minecraftsmen here? My kid has been trying to get a mod installed (the Paintball mod) and he hasn’t had any luck. I’ve tried to help, and I can’t figure it out either. We’ve looked all over the Minecraft fora and we can’t get it to work.
So, I could use really clear step-by-step directions on what files I need and what I need to do in order to get it to work. Also, do I really need winrar or 7-zip, or can I just change the .jar extension to .zip and make changes that way (changing it back when I’m done)?
Who would have thought that modding Minecraft would be harder than getting Netflix to work in Linux.
Modding minecraft never needs to be done manually these days. There are all sorts of programs that can help you do it automatically, without permanently changing your .jar file.
My personal favorite is a program called Multi MC. It lets you set up different profiles with different mods installed, etc. It’s very useful and does all the installing for you. No need to use winrar or 7zip to open jars and whatnot.
However, I haven’t played MC in a long time now, and it looks like MultiMC does not support 1.6.2 yet (that’s the newest version?)
Perhaps try Magic Launcher (it might be even better). Link
Many many mods require you to have a framework mod installed first before they will work like Minecraft Forge or Modloader. Maybe that’s why your mod isn’t working.
Yeah, I did a quick google and it looks like MagicLauncher, which does support 1.6.2, will run Paintball. Basically, you download ML and then navigate to wherever you have the mods stored, select them from ML and hit run. It does all the work for you. I like ML and refuse to play MC without my optifine.
Well, I still can’t get it to work. I run MagicLauncher and it shows Paintball.zip as an External Mod. That doesn’t do it, so I deselect it and navigate to the zip file myself, so it’s under the regular Mods section (in the middle), and it still doesn’t come up.
My kid is convinced that to use the mod, you have to do something other than just press the E key, but he doesn’t know which key to press.
I have no idea what I’m missing, and trying to slog through the hundreds of threads on the minecraft is giving me a headache.
Has anyone gotten the paintball mod to work, and can you give me some clear instructions?
(Once thing I have decided, though, is that I hope the SDMB never allows avatars or graphics in the signatures. Those minecraft boards are really painful to look at.)
One thing you need to make sure of is that the mod is written specifically for the version of minecraft you are trying to run. If the paintball mod was written for 1.5.3 (for example), it almost certainly won’t work in any other version (especially a major new version like 1.6.2). Check that if you can!
MagicLauncher wants to run it under 1.5.3, and we tried that first, but no luck. Then, I changed it to run under 1.6.2 and no luck. This is pretty frustrating (and, I’m no longer a gaming God in my son’s eyes!).
