Mini-doper rants

Eh, it must just be one of those things, since it pings so many people’s annoying-dars. Lord knows I can’t scientifically explain my personal tastes either. If we could rationalize pet peeves, they’d turn into legitimate grievances, and then the Pit would be no fun. (In light of that, my overanalysis was probably a bit much, but hey, it’s what I do.)

Actually, I do. It’s the punch line. My favorite part is anticipating the punch line.

QFT

Just a minor annoyance – Dopers who take ownership (or have ownership given to them) for threads about TV series. Sometimes it means they start a thread several hours before that week’s episode airs with no content except maybe a one-line episode description. This means the thread is likely to be on page 2 after the show airs, which means that somebody else will start a new thread and there’ll be two threads and you don’t know whether to post in the thread started by the “owner” or the most recent thread started by the person who didn’t know that threads about that show are always started by somebody else.

Or it means that a thread doesn’t get started at all because everybody’s waiting for the owner to start it and they don’t want to give offense.

When people make a silly little joke, and follow it with What? It’s not the jokes that get on my nerves, but the “what” or “D&R” that follows it.

My recent (and ongoing) peeve is people who post the SAME GODDAMNED THING THREE POSTS AFTER SOMEONE ELSE (especially when that someone is me). Read the friggin’ thread before you contribute your priceless gems, please, or you make me shouty.

I’ll add my pet hate:

Ignoring someone who has posted a reasonably well-written, thought out response or post that’s relevant to the thread- as in, not even taking the time to say “I see what you’re getting at, but that’s not quite what we meant/Interesting points but already covered or not applicable”; just completely ignoring the post like it never happened.

I mean, it’s bad enough when someone with an unfamiliar username and “guest” replies to the thread and gets ignored, but when it’s reputable posters with high postcounts and a generally good rep on the boards, it’s just rude, IMHO.

Ops! Never mind. Was not specifically about Dopers. :frowning:

In addition to what Martini just posted–

I hate when this happens.

  1. You post an important and well thought out idea, opinion, or fact directly related to the thread.

  2. One of the favored or popular 'dopers reiterates your point 5 posts later. They can even quote you in their post.

  3. All subsequent laudatory references to your outstanding idea is attributed to the other poster. “Oh, great point, fabulous 'doper! You’re the bestest!”

Shit, I am only good for 3-4 posts a year, can I at least get credit for them?

My recent (and ongoing) peeve is people who post the SAME GODDAMNED THING THREE POSTS AFTER SOMEONE ELSE (especially when that someone is me). Read the friggin’ thread before you contribute your priceless gems, please, or you make me shouty.

Well played, sir.

"Try reading for comprehension"

Try fucking yourself with a red hot branding iron. So someone missed the point of something or misunderstood something. Big fucking deal. Try ignoring the post or cutting them some slack. This line should be banned as offensive behavior.

I can’t argue with the main point of the OP, so I’ll try to invalidate the thread by hijacking it over some minor point that doesn’t really mean anything

Yes, because someone mentions that the villain of their story is FAT, we have five pages about how mean it is and how unnecessary it is to mention their weight. Grow the fuck up already.

Or we spend two pages discussing something mentioned in passing in the OP, as if it’s more important than the main thrust of the OP. Because some asshole has a bee in his undies about that particular minor point.

Not particularly.

I’m just posting here to be seen.

I’m just posting here to add one to my post count.

  1. When there is a thread saying “share your favorite X” (movie, TV show, book) and someone posts a list of a hundred different things without commentary. What’s the point of that? Who is going to read it? Post one or two things, and then if those same one or two things keep coming up, it suggests that they are really really good. Or post more, but with descriptions, so that if people are looking for suggestions they can get actual insight.

  2. When someone starts a spin-off thread to deal with an issue that is arising in an original thread and someone hijacks that spin-off thread to talk about the original issue. So you get two threads, each discussing the same two topics–basically a muddled mess.

  1. Hi Opal.

It wasn’t funny 9 years ago.

Thought of some more - Doper parents who use any thinly-veiled excuse to brag on their kids, and the people who listen to obscure music who can’t let a music thread go by without talking at length about Obscurey McWhoCares and his band.

Don’t forget, they’ll be touring in support of the new album- Obscurey McWhoCares Plays His Hits- this summer.
