Misogyny on the SDMB, Sept. 2018 edition

What all the storm und drang on this board stems from is that many of the board’s posters want this place to be an echo chamber. They absolutely cannot stand dissent and invariably seek to get people moderated and/or banned not for breaking any rules but simply for having different beliefs than they do. And since for the most part no rules are being broken by the opposition, they’ll land on the only ambiguous one allowed and attempt to portray their opponents as being “jerks.” And many of them truly believe it. They simply cannot imagine any way for anyone

What you are suggesting is just another way of achieving this. Sure, your plan still allows for dissent, but it also attempts to shuttle it aside where hardly anyone is exposed to it so everyone else can go merrily on their way promoting whatever ideas or viewpoints they want without being challenged on them.

The board’s management, to its credit, seeks to have a board where dissenting ideas and points of view can be heard. It sees value in having dissenting viewpoints on the board and consciously acts so as not to have this place turn into an echo chamber.

But because so many of the board’s posters are so absolutely convinced of the moral superiority of their views and their beliefs and the intensity with which they hold them, they are utterly incapable of tolerating disagreement and automatically jump the conclusion that anyone who opposes them is, by that very fact, assholes. So they pester the mods and screech make demands for things like topic bans, thread bans or outright banning for those they’ve been unsuccessful at driving away through pile-ons, insults and mockery.

There is only one way that only one side can be heard from, and that is through dictatorship. The country’s founders recognized that people are not free if their speech is proscribed so that only one point of view is allowed. It’s not for nothing that communist dictatorships, which I hope we can agree are liberal at their base, are notorious for suppressing free speech and also punitive toward those who express disagreement with the party line.

Everywhere in this country we see efforts by people on the left to quash ideas they disagree with and prevent the proponents of them from being heard

I’ve always admired the fact that the board’s administration and its moderators have been willing to put up with the amount of whinging they have to endure in order to keep this place from becoming the full-on left-wing echo chamber that so many of its members so strongly desire it to be.

None of the board’s conservative posters behave in any way like the majority of its liberal posters. We don’t hurl expletives and vulgar insults at our opponents at anything approaching the way the board’s liberal posters do with us. We don’t accuse them of being mean, uncaring, willfully evil or any other insults intended to portray them as being deliberate assholes to their fellow man.

In short, the posters here who constantly come in for abuse and accusations of an endless variety of assholism are not the ones who are engaging in it.

I hope the board will continue to allow those of us who disagree with the prevailing political sentiments here to continue to have a voice. I also hope that as the board attempts to grow that it will seek and welcome dissenting posters to liven the place up even more and to offer an even greater sense of perspective as to how the other side thinks.

I believe this would become a terribly boring place should it eventually become a board where liberals congregate to preach to the choir, virtue signal and slap each other on the back over what wonderful and superior people they are. This board’s liberal members live in enough of a bubble as it is, given the shock, surprise, horror and disbelief evident in their reaction to the election of Donald Trump. They are clearly out of step with a very large percentage of American citizens and it would behoove them to try to learn how the other side thinks, rather than seeking to drive them away to become even more insulated and ignorant of the outside world.

Time and time again we hear on this board about how Trump’s voters are racists, misogynists, Nazis, etc., but invariably when one of the board’s posters comment about family or personal acquaintances who support Donald Trump, those people somehow never fit the liberal image of Trump supporters. One would think that eventually it would begin to sink in that Trump’s voters are not the evil beings everyone here is so utterly convinced they are, and that to a great degree they’re just normal everyday people going about their lives the way everyone else does, taking their kids to school or soccer practice, buying groceries, mowing their lawns and trying to pay the bills. Not many of the board’s posters know this now, but should the place ever become the echo chamber so many desire they’ll never even be able to imagine it.

Yeah there is a whole bunch of referring to Republicans as Nazis going on at the moment in Elections. Pretty nasty and despicable broad brush.

Yes, nasty and despicable. And commonplace.

Yet we’re the ones who should be banned.

…and another misogyny discussion gets whatabouted…

Good job, boys.

I’m surprised at your apparent naivety and lack of imagination.

Still, I can’t help but think that if you two really tried to wrap your heads around it, you could think of a way payment could be achieved while also maintaining anonymity for all involved.

Care to give it a try?

Yes, good job at trying to change the topic of discussion from your misogynistic posts to how you guys are being tormented for your misogynistic posts.

Not unless you care to give it a try at not posting misogynist posts.

Or is that not fun for you?

I never post misogynistic posts.

I do post things that get called misogynistic by the offenderatti, but that doesn’t mean they’re misogynistic in point of fact.

I know this because “misogynistic” doesn’t mean "whatever agenda-fied women and their liberal male lackeys decide to take offense at.

To those of us who haven’t fallen through the rabbit hole, “misogynistic” requires, you know…misogyny.

And the things I post don’t contain that. Quite the contrary actually.

So, stuff like characterising sexual assault of young women as not “all that serious”? That kind of thing?

You don’t appear to have the ability to recognize misogyny, based on your posts. All the women in these threads have told you that your approach is misogynistic, but nothing has sunk in for you.

Even beyond that, he’s characterized those who point this out to him as literally brainwashed. He’s right, everyone else is wrong, and there’s no way that could change because we’re all brainwashed by a victimhood mentality. Past a certain point, regardless of whether or not someone is simply trolling, discussion becomes impossible. SA is not going to get better. If we’re going to demand better (and I think we should) on the topic of blatant misogyny, his days here are badly numbered.

Correct. This is why today’s women quail and have their lives ruined by things that would have been but a momentary annoyance to women in 1960.

What you two don’t realize is that your view is an opinion. You behave as though I continue to turn a blind eye to the facts when the reality is that not only that there are no facts but only opinion. Additionally, there’s the fact that asignificant portion of America’s women don’t agree with you, as Trump’s election should have made you aware by now. To give just one example, here’s a post that appeared on my Facebook feed yesterday from one of those 1960s women who is 69 years old now:

She also posted this:

And then there’s this from don’t mind me, a woman in the Pit thread dedicated to me:

So yeah, when women on this board who’ve obviously been steeped in the victimhood dogma of the left for years and years insist that I’m being a misogynist, I don’t come close to accepting that as fact.

Here’s more from another woman on Facebook, 66 years old:

The moral? Doper women are not representative of all American women. Shocking, huh?

I would really urge anyone who is troubled by how obvious sexist trolls are allowed to operate freely on the SDMB to rethink any financial support they have given, or are considering to give to the board. I regret purchasing a membership recently and if you were considering doing so, I would suggest you hold off until we see how the mods address the rampant sexism and trolling here.

I’m already not paying because of the lack of moderation on racism, but the moderation on sexism is making me not pay twice as hard.

Inconvenient truths are so…inconvienient, aren’t they, monk?

Believe it or not, posting to refute claims and attitudes on this board do not constitute sexism and/or trolling. They constitute debate. Do you want an echo chamber or do you want discussion of opposing viewpoints? If you’re only interested in an echo chamber I’m sure there are plenty of liberal or Democrat boards around where you can go and hear yourself reflected back to you to your heart’s content.

That’s okay. I recently coughed up to get my Charter Membership recovered and probably paid enough to more than offset the both of you, even if only one of you deigns to pay.

It’s going to suck when you get eventually banned, then.

How many people do you have to pay off so far?

Zero out of six.

Are you going to explain to all those that think they have earned the money how exactly they have erred?
