Miss Universe: Wrong Contestant Crowned

Harvey needs to get out and do an interview where he makes fun of himself quickly. If he holes up too long with nothing but rushed-and-deleted tweets speaking for him, he’s gonna do PR damage to himself. He can’t just take this thing that seriously. He fucked up, no one died, let’s laugh it off and move on.

Comments from Elsewhere:

“My wife is from Colombia, and I’ve SEEN that look.”

“My wife is from Massachusetts, and I’ve seen that look.”

Wouldn’t a Family Feud X be more appropriate?

Sure, beauty pageants are well past their shelf life but for the girls that participate it’s what they choose to do of their own free will and they don’t deserve the humiliation that Miss Colombia obviously endured. I think the proper thing for the pageant to do would be to give Miss Colombia the same prize that the winner got.

Maybe Steve Harvey can team up with John Travolta…

Colombia got robbed, u guys.

The winner and runner-up will be better remembered for this having happened than if it had gone off smoothly. Nobody can remember every pitcher who has thrown a perfect game, but there was only one Harvey Haddix.

BBC reported Donald Trump has weighed in, saying no such snafu would have occurred had he still owned the pageant. (He sold it earlier this year.) How exactly, would he have prevented this?

Briefings? Rehearsals? Better training? :dubious:

On the evening news they reported that Harvey had skipped the rehearsal, so he hadn’t had a chance to become familiar with the format of the result card.

Yeah… I get the impression he’s used to winging things, which may work well in hosting a daily game show (spontaneity and all) but not so much in a meticulously choreographed special event.

Being so close to all those beautiful women I’d have made some mistakes too.

Despite all the other hot air vented over this, Harvey did do the right thing in 'fessing up to his mistake as soon as he realized he made one. I’ll give him credit for that. He would have known that he was going to take a hit for it, but no matter what if he had delayed it would have been worse.

Dude needed to practice reading?

Based on my Filipino friends’, and my many Colombian friends’ reactions, he made it worse with his apology.

By keeping all those damn foreigners out of the contest?

The whole thing was just awful. Generally I pretend contests like this do not even exist, and I would have ignored this one, except for the screw up. It was humiliating for all involved. Watching it made me uncomfortable. But for me the worst bit was the comment made by the spokesman for the Filipino president.

“In bagging this victory, Ms. Wurtzbach not only serves as a tremendous source of pride for our people, but also holds up the banner of our women and of our country-as a true representative of what the Filipina can achieve.”

It must suck to be a Filipina doctor, nurse, scientist, author, journalist, lawyer, politician, artist, or athlete, if being a beauty queen is supposed to be the “true representative” of a woman’s achievement.

Dear patriarchy, go father yourself.

I’m a bit late, but did take a minute to razz my Colombian co-worker!

Miss Colombia’s caption from Part 1 of Tom & Lorenzo’s annual Miss Universe costume snark. (All the previous contestants were in wings.):

The Miss Universe pageant is worth it just for Tom and Lorenzo’s recap. They are so great.

Some of the gags there can’t stand a live audience.
