I just didn’t understand how you knew that a majority of board posters wished to keep the smiley. I wasn’t trying to be cute, smart-assed, or otherwise snarky. It was a declarative statement(question), with no hidden overtones.
I personally don’t care if it stays or goes. I don’t have a very strong opinion.
Just judging by what I see in this thread, in which only a couple posters have actually come out in favor of this. How about TubaDiva come up with some evidence that this is actually a “contentious” matter and that more than one or two people are offended?
The dude’s fun. It’s delightfully random to have a smiley devoted to Orthodox Judaism. Why remove it?
I’ll go on record for supporting the re-establishment of the Jewish smiley. Dexter’s reasoning smacks of sickening political correctness, demanding that anything specific be removed to avoid offending the generalized masses. Frankly, fuck the masses. The masses can get their own god-damned message boards.
Perhaps you’ve made Dex’s argument for him. The Jewish smiley used the characteristics of a small subset of a population (the Hasadim) to represent the entire population (all Jews). I believe that’s the definition of a stereotype and exactly what Dex’s example was meant to demonstrate.
I don’t care much about the Jewish smiley, since I can’t imagine ever using it. I do agree with getting rid of Wally, though. Making that smiley was a great tribute when it began, but that obviously isn’t appropriate after all. And it was used incorrectly far too often to be worth the trouble.
I still think we need two more smileys to replace the ones lost, to complete the set. One I’d like to have is the halo, a smiley often used to jokingly feign innocence.
And a ZOMBIE smiley might help mark ZOMBIE thread without getting people’s panties in a twist.
