Not a fan of Joe Davis.
I won’t comment on the current M’s game lest I jinx it, but I can comment on the Yanks/Jays game in progress: LOL

Mariners’ dream looking good again.
Bless you. Seriously. Blessings upon you.
I just tuned in to discover the rout had suddenly turned into a tie game. OTOH it’s only half over.
Bronx Cheer in full effect right now!
I turned on the game just in time to see Cal Raleigh hit a home run… right to a Mariners fan wearing a shirt with “DUMP HERE” above and below a big 61.
Said fan proceeded to whip out and put on a duplicate shirt but numbered 62.
That. Was. Awesome!
What are the chances that the guy that comes prepared with the two shirts actually catches it? If Vegas had odds on that, they would be astronomical.
It was a thing of beauty.
Big comeback for the Yanks tonight.
Hopefully we can win tomorrow and take this back to Toronto.
See how I avoided jinxing the M’s, but I totally jinxed the Jays. Soar-ee. I didn’t know my powers were so powerful.
I almost went to bed down 6-1 (it’s now almost 5AM, local time.)
Man, Yankee starters have gotten hammered in the series. Winning the ALDS is long, long shot, but at least losing now wouldn’t feel like a massacre.
A question for the baseball brains here; have the Mariners ever won game 1 of a post-season series? They haven’t played in all that many. In that great divisional series against the Yankees in '95; the M’s lost the first two games in NY, then won three at home.
Yes, 2000 ALDS against the White Sox.
And 1995 ALCS against Cleveland. And 2000 ALCS against the Yankees. And 2022 Wild Card against Toronto.
They won game one of rather a few post-game series.
They’ve never won Game 1 of a postseason series at home, though.
That surprises me. I remember Randy Johnson pitching in relief in game 5 against the Yankees, so the starting pitching was a bit depleted for the ALCS. I thought they got pretty soundly defeated, though not swept, by Cleveland. You’re right, though; the M’s were up 2-1 before Cleveland won three straight.
I still can’t get over this. I keep thinking about the process that guy went through to get those shirts made, and what he expected to actually happen. I assume he was just hoping Raleigh would hit a HR (or two or…three?!), and he’d get to be excited and rip his shirt(s) off. But to actually catch the ball?! That’s insane - this guy has a story for the rest of his life.
And he also got a Cal Raleigh meet and greet after the game, along with a signed bat. Insane.
There’s been a lot of unexpected and unlikely stories like that this Mariners season.
Well, the Blue Jays today will not have a starting pitcher. This was an actual choice they made, to only carry three starters. Mystifying.
I am a regular at Fangraphs but I assume there is a study out there seeing how teams do when they use an “opener” like this. For one thing it certainly will by definition dump a lot of work onto their pen (esp. since the opener in question is usually a reliever).
