MLB: July 2022

As an alternate take on the draft - I was interested. One of my students last year got picked up by the Mets in the Fourth Round. If he makes it to the show fairly soon it will mean that 2 players on the Mets are from my high school. Plus a few others we have scattered about MLB.

The time missed has been hard not to notice. He started missing significant time five years ago.

C’mon, Anaheim, trade him to a team where he might actually win something.

Of course New York will have home field for any matchup with Toronto, barring a catastrophic collapse. No big deal, they can replace Benintendi on the road with Joey Gal… okay, maybe it’s a big deal.

In the third and final game of Nats/Dodgers two days ago, Patrick Corbin was chased after giving up 6 runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the first. The 0.2 IP was the shortest start of Corbin’s 250-game career, and it was only the fifth time in franchise history that a pitcher has been removed in the first inning for performance-related reasons.

Corbin is objectively the worst pitcher in the majors. Is there anything we can do so that we don’t practically guarantee a loss every fifth day? Can we move him to short relief? Can we move him to the minors, trade him, or release him? He’s got one hell of an albatross contract.

Last night the Yanks beat KC 1-0 on Judge’s homer in the bottom of the ninth. That loss wasted a helluva pitching effort by Brady Singer of the Royals, who pitched 7 innings of 1-hit ball, walking one and hitting a batter.

Royals have now been shut out for the last 27 consecutive innings.

As an interesting note, the Yankees have the highest scoring offense in the AL despite batting only .245, which I am pretty sure would make them the first team to lead a league in runs while batting under .250 since 1968.

If you exclude Joey Gallo, the Yankees are hitting .251.

Hell, he’s not even the worst pitcher on the Nats. Joan Adon is 1-12 with a 7.10 ERA.

Only way to get rid of him is to force his salary on whoever acquires Soto.

The Cardinals brought back Albert Pujols for one last hurrah because he had the best years of his career in St. Louis, and he brought a ton of nostalgic excitement with him. Trout has played his entire career with the Angels. He deserves to finish his career there, even if it’s cut short and he never wins a ring.

Nobody deserves a career with the Angels. Nobody.

The Blue Jays finally formally announced teir $300 million plan to make the dome more of an actual ballpark:

A key thing is eventual total replacement of all seats so that every seat faces the infield, like a proper modern baseball stadium. There’s a lot of nice changes going on though. Somewhat unspoken of is any plan to brighten the concourses, which I hope is a part of all this.

It will be interesting to see how this affects the stadium’s effect on offense. SkyDome (no one here calls it Rogers Centre) has a lot of foul territory; reducing foul territory increases batting averages. Toronto, interestingly enough, has never been a consistently good hitter’s park, and yet aside from the foul ground there isn’t any obvious reason why that would be the case.

Luis Castillo to the Mariners. Cincinnati to Seattle has got to be a rare trade.

Can’t say I’m upset, the Mariners have been fortunate that their starting rotation has been available all year, but you can’t count on that forever. Getting another legit starter, an extremely good one, that might make the difference between making the playoffs and missing yet again.

This also puts to rest any speculation about trading for Juan Soto, but I figured that was always a long shot. Soto is one of the most sought-after trade pieces the MLB has seen in a long time; I saw it described as a “generational” trade opportunity. Teams just aren’t willing to part with young players as good as he is; he’s a unicorn.

I’m glad to see Jarred Kelenic wasn’t traded either. I still think he has a chance to be great but he’s been mentioned as a piece they might need to lose to get a big trade.

How often does Gerritt Cole retire the first two batters in an inning and wind up giving up five runs? I’d bet that was a first for him. Great comeback for the Yanks. Judge has been on an absolute tear lately, I think he’s got a shot at Maris now (I still consider him the legitimate season record holder).

If nothing else, Maris does hold the AL record still and Ruth for the 154 game season.

The top 6, all Steroids users of course. Do we assume Stanton was clean and leads the NL?

  1. Barry Bonds, 73 (2001)
  2. Mark McGwire, 70 (1998)
  3. Sammy Sosa, 66 (1998)
  4. Mark McGwire, 65 (1999)
  5. Sammy Sosa, 64 (2001)
  6. Sammy Sosa, 63 (1999)
  7. Roger Maris, 61 (1961)
  8. Babe Ruth, 60 (1927)
  9. Babe Ruth 59 (1921)
  10. Giancarlo Stanton 59 (2017)

An 8 run 8 was fun to watch.

Not if you’re a Royals fan…

Not many of those though.

True.

And getting fewer by the day.

do they need to trade for a closer?

White Sox’ shortstop Tim Anderson has been suspended for three games for helmet-to-hat contact with the home plate umpire; after filing an appeal of the suspension, he had two hits.

Well, they completed a trade with the Cubs where they acquired Chris Martin for Zach McKinstry.
