You picked 3 rentals and Bellinger has a player option next season. They wouldn’t get significant return for those players since there is no control after this season.
The Yankees got Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier and Adam Warren (who was very good in 2017) by flipping Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller at the 2016 deadline. In those deals, they also got Billy McKinney (who was packaged later with Brandon Drury to get J.A. Happ) and Justus Sheffield, who was later part of another package to get James Paxton from Seattle.
That’s what happens when you have top-end relievers to move when teams are desperate. They’d get a substantial return for Bellinger, too. Maybe keep Grisham because he wouldn’t be in great demand.
It might be moot now because Judge ‘only’ has a flexor strain, but they should probably sell anyway. This isn’t a championship caliber team, with or without Judge (who will most likely be strictly a DH the rest of the way, leaving Stanton as the world’s most expensive pinch hitter or comic relief in the outfield.)
A
If they’re sellers, why wouldn’t they trade players who are rentals? That’s exactly who gets moved at the trade deadline. You don’t trade long term contracts when you’re trying to rebuild - that’s who build on.
The worst-case scenario is happening for the Royals, and it’s 2016 all over again. Someone in the front office is under the mistaken impression that the Royals are in any position that contend this year, in our making tiny little moves to add worthless offensive pieces that no one has any faith will do anything of merit. A few weeks ago they traded a middling OF prospect for Adam Frazier. Frazier will do nothing worthwhile, and the prospect (Cam Devanny, I think?) wasn’t even given a chance (he’d produced pretty well this year in AAA - hit 18(?) HRs).
Today they just traded for Randal Grichuk, yet another terrible OF veteran who won’t be on the roster next year. What the hell are they thinking is being accomplished here?
I’m just glad it’s nothing serious.
I loathe the Yankees but respect and admire Judge and don’t want anything bad to happen to him.
Trade alert:
The Kansas City Royals acquire Randal Grichuk from the Diamondbacks. Heading to Arizona is RHP Andrew Hoffmann.
ETA: @Munch , this was just to provide a link for your mention of the Royals trade.
I’m pissed that he came this close to having the first 5-HR game in history.
Keeping in their aggressive fashion, the Yankees have acquired Amad Rosario from the Nationals in exchange for Rosario cost the Yankees RHP Clayton Beeter, a 26-year-old right-hander in Triple-A who has made five major league relief appearances, and Browm Martinez, an 18-year-old outfielder in the Dominican Summer League.
It’s aggressive but it only fills a need if they are going to sit Volpe.
So far (1.5 games) the McMahon trade is looking great. The defense is greatly improved and he’s hitting the ball well too. Even with just the defense it’s a good deal.
The Atlanta Braves picked up the DFA’d Erick Fedde from St. Louis. Their entire starting rotation is currently on the IL.
Nick Kurtz took the next game off due to lower body soreness and fatigue.
Probably from hitting four home runs and running the bases so damn much yesterday.
Potentially impacting his trade value (and the ability to be traded at all), the Guardians Emmanuel Clase has been placed on leave by MLB while it conducts a gambling probe.
Interestingly, Clase is the second Guardian currently on leave amidst a gambling probe. Luis Ortiz is facing a similar probe. No indication if the two probes are connected or related.
The Twins have traded P Chris Paddack to the Tigers (and pitcher Randy Dobnak) in exchange for C/1B prospect Enrique Jimenez.
Dear Lord. Chicago! When are you going to make moves to fill the gaping fucking holes in your bullpen? You’ve got the bats and they’ve been able to cover the shit-ass pen so far (to a point), but you can’t count on that. Get some fucking help!
Agreed, though I think a rotation piece is needed, too. And I’d like to shore up the bench. Whether that means Suarez, with Shaw going to the “super sub” guy, or letting Shaw stay at third and trying to pick up a bench player or two, I’m not sure on. I’m leaning towards letting Shaw play every day.
To me that’s a stretch piece. Fix the pen and the starters will work through it. IF you can fix the relievers for cheap enough, then sure, go for another starter.
The field I would leave alone. They’re not costing us games, plus the roster expansion is coming up. We’re not deep at 3rd in the prospect list, but if you gotta make a move, do that from within.
Kris Bubic of the Royals, who pitched in the All-Star game, is done for the season with a left rotator cuff strain. Bubic was 8-7 with a 2.55 ERA.
The news came a day after KC signed Seth Lugo to a two-year, $46 million extension.
I figured Lugo was trade bait for some much needed offense, but now I’m glad he’s still in the rotation. Their starting pitching was their strength, but it’s getting just a bit thin.
RIP, Ryne Sandberg.

That hurts. He was my all-time favorite Cub.
