Damned spellcheck!!1!
In non-trade news Tampa Bay had 3 players exit the game with injuries. The worst one was Jonathan Aranda who may have broken his wrist.
I like the revamped bullpen, with four guys who have served as closers: David Bednar, Devin Williams, Luke Weaver and Camilo Doval. I guess the other four are Loiasiga, Hill, Yerry De Los Santos and Jake Bird. Hmm, only one lefty. Also hmm, there are several guys on the IL who need somwhere else to go. I could do without seeing Hamilton or Leiter jr. ever again.
The Twins evidently decided that this season is not worth saving.
They traded NINE players from their 26-man roster: Carlos Correa, Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, Louis Varland, Danny Coulombe, Harrison Bader, Willi Castro, Brock Stewart and Chris Paddack.
IOW, monetize mow before their value crashes.
The Red Sox now have two - count them two - struggling ex-Dodgers pitchers coming off Tommy John sugery, adding Dustin May to complement Walker Buehler.
Full throttle, baby!
Leiter was brutal to watch. I doubt he will be back up.
I hope not, but the statgeeks go bonkers for his 30+ percent K rate. I can understand the allure, but the guys he can’t fool hammer him.
I gotta give Cashman an A on this trade deadline. They didn’t get a frontline starter, but who did? The bullpen is obviously improved, the bench has been been deepened and balanced. So many options for a flexible and creative manager…er, or Boone. Starting with pinch runner Caballero who can steal at will and spell Volpe at short. It might not all work out, but I’m properly impressed by the moves that were made.
Boy, did the Sox lay a big trade deadline turd. Full throttle, indeed.
Back in June, the Brewers traded mediocre pitcher Aaron Civale to the White Sox, for mediocre first baseman Andrew Vaughn. Vaughn, who was hitting .189 with the Sox, and who had a career cumulative bWAR of -0.5 over 4+ seasons in Chicago, was going to be a bench bat, behind the Brewers’ starting first baseman, Rhys Hoskins.
But, then, in early July, Hoskins suffered a sprained thumb, and went on the IL, making Vaughn the starter for the time being. In 16 games with the Brewers, Vaughn is hitting .365, with five home runs, and an OPS of 1.157. I’m pleasantly surprised!
As a Cub fan first, I’m not pleasantly surprised. I’m happy for him personally in the abstract, but don’t want the Brewers to win another game.
August thread.
