MLB: June 2011

I love that I can listen to the NY radio broadcast at work (in Charlotte) through MLB.tv.

Jorge! 2-run HR to send the Yanks up 4-2.

Damn!

Our offense sucks!

Looks like Ted Lilly isn’t going to be able to sustain the Dodgers’ starting pitching success of the last few days. Let’s hope the offense is up to the task this afternoon.

As a long-suffering Braves fan, I realize we’re probably good enough to secure the wild-card, but don’t have enough punch to get things done in the playoffs.

But the future looks incredibly bright from a pitching standpoint. What if Beachy is indeed this good? In 3 years (or less), we could have a rotation of Hanson, Beachy, Minor, Teheran, and either Delgado or Vizcaino. Kimbrel and maybe Venters should still be around, too - I’m uncertain of their contract statuses.

At this point, I’d be willing to trade away one or two of the pieces for a stud hitting prospect to grow up with Heyward and Freeman. We can’t expect to win every game 2-1.

There. This outcome is more like what I have become accustomed to.

We aren’t going away.

You’ll be in real trouble if we figure out this whole newfangled “defense” concept.

“What are you thinking out there?” Lasorda asked.

“Two things,” Guerrero said.

“What’s the first thing?”

“God, don’t let them hit the ball to me.”

“And what’s the other thing?” Lasorda said.

“Don’t let them hit the ball to Sax.”

Did you watch the Giants win last year? You can win a WS with surprisingly little offense.

Aside from Kemp and Ethier, it looks like you’ve figured out this “hitting” thing. Tigers starting pitching, for about the last 4 of 5 turns through the rotation has been very good and consistent. This time around (with the exception of Verlander)? Yeah, not so much. Good ending. I knew that had no chance of being a game winning grand slam. Didn’t you?

With the win against the Reds today and the Red Sox loss, the Yankees retake 1st place by % points. As well as the Sox are playing lately that’s pretty impressive.

I was listening, rather than watching, so I only had the voice of Charlie Steiner giving me temporary false hope.

The Dodgers have yet to sweep an opponent this year. But I’ll take a series win for the time being, so long as we can start winning a lot more games than we lose.

It made it to the warning track and Austin Jackson had to make a good play on the ball to make the catch, but that was a fun ending.

You’re assuming the Dodgers stay in LA. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they played in Brooklyn uniforms today…

On the one hand, as someone who now lives on the East Coast, I would be stoked to have the Dodgers return to Brooklyn. I could actually attend games again. Hell, I would be only a little farther away from the stadium than i was when I lived in LA. On the other hand, I don’t like that particular snowball’s chances of surviving the fires of hell.

There is a better shot of the Rays moving up here. (which I would also not be opposed to)

And the Reds bats come alive in the nightcap. I think the Brian Gordon “experiment” is over…

And not a moment too soon. The Reds are really struggling against the AL so far. We play the Orioles next, so hopefully that will provide some relief.

Hypothetical question - let’s say Mark Cuban buys up the Dodgers, and decides he wants to move them back to Brooklyn. Would the owners/Selig allow that? There isn’t a specific rule that forbids a third team in a particular city, is there (i.e. no two teams from the same league in the same area, etc.)?

I’m not really sure how removing a team from the second-largest market in the country would be considered a good financial or publicity move by anybody in the business.

MLB is specifically exempt from anti-trust law and so can deny a team the right to move for any reason or no reason at all.

The owners would never have any reason to allow this; even if it was specifically good for Mark Cuban and the Dodgers, it would entail the risk of huge negative value to MLB.

Conversely, as badly run as the Dodgers have been lately, the central problem with the team is Frank McCourt and that problem will soon go away. LA is a baseball gold mine.
