MLB: June 2022

The umpire waited far too long to call the grounds crew to cover the field in Cincinnati. It had been raining for several minutes before it started to deluge, and now we’re in a rain delay with part of the third-base dirt uncovered because the tarp is too heavy.

Robo umps will fix that too.

At least roboumps won’t try to physically enforce the unwritten rules on you.

a bit of MLB history from where i live apparently happened today

1966 MLB Draft: New York Mets pass on Reggie Jackson to select Antelope Valley HS catcher Steve Chilcott #1

Poor Joey shouldn’t be expected to adapt to infield shifts.

“Growing up, we never had that,” Gallo said. “It’s tough to adjust to it because it wasn’t a thing in the minors. … Over time it’s gotten more extreme and more effective. From a hitter’s standpoint, it’s something that could be changed.”

Indeed, for someone with a lifetime batting average of .204, who only hit better than .223 in one season in his 7+ years in the majors, it’s got to be the shift that has him batting .176 so far in 2022.

And Joe Maddon is the next manager casualty.

We were just wondering that at lunch. Weird timing.

Stephen Strasburg to return on Thursday for the Nats.

“How the mighty have fallen”

The Brewers are in a swoon, having lost five in a row, and are now only a half-game ahead of the Cardinals in the NL Central.

  • They were swept over the weekend by the Padres, getting shut out in two of the three games.
  • On Tuesday night, against the Phillies, they were up 2-1, going into the 9th inning, and sent closer Josh Hader out to shut the door. Hader, who had a 0.00 ERA coming into the game, and having posted 40 straight scoreless appearances, finally had a bad night, giving up a solo HR to tie the game, then another solo HR to give the Phillies the win.
  • Tonight, they got blown out by the Phillies, 10-0.

things like that I could see a certain CA team in blue doing I mean didn’t they almost blow a 10-game lead 4 or 5 seasons ago? …just long enough to give the fans fits I think they squeaked into the playoffs but yeesh …

Well I didn’t expect Alejandro Kirk to be the Jays’ best player, but right now, that’s precisely what he is. He’s having the kind of season that would merit MVP ballot mentions.

So at what point does Mike Trout get traded to a team he can win a World Series with? He’s getting Ernie Banksed by the Angels.

3-4 more years I would guess.

Tony LaRussa intentionally walked Trea Turner today. No big deal - he’s one of the hottest hitters in the game. However…TLR only did it once the count reached 1-2, an extremely favorable pitcher’s count.

A most predicable thing happened next - the next batter cranked a 3-run HR, and the Dodgers won by 2.

You mean 2017 when they lost something like 20 of 25 games? They won 104 games (a franchise record) and finished 11 games ahead of the second place Diamondbacks. Lost to the Astros, who weren’t exactly playing by the rules, in the World Series.

Stephen Strasburg got lit up by the Marlins in the 1st inning. I hope this isn’t portentous of the rest of the game.

that was it … thanks

I heard this on the news a couple hours ago. I’m a Cubs fan, so I get this managerial horseshittery, where the manager has to insert himself into the game from the Maddon days, but, man. This is just next level.

To say TLR “only did it once the count reached 1-2” is technically accurate but misleading.

What happened was that the count first reached 0-2, but then the pitcher threw a wild pitch which moved the count to 1-2 and also allowed the runner on first to advance to second. The decision to walk the guy at that point was based on the runner moving into scoring position and not on the count reaching 1-2.

Which is not to say TLR was necessarily right to walk the guy, but you’re making it seem much more idiotic than it actually was.
