MLB - June

Nats beat the Brewers in 16 innings. I’m in Kabul and got up at 4.30 to watch the game on my ipad and now I’m starting to think about what I want for lunch all in one game.

Mariners beating up on Red Sox. Good times.

God, the Giants can’t hit the Padres’ rookie pitchers.

I lasted until a little after 1 am. I expected to wake up and read that Adam LaRoche gave up a walk off.

How cool would it have been if Rochey pitched? When he was first drafted the Braves wanted him to be a pitcher (he pitched in school), but he wanted to be a position player.

Could be too that an above-average number of key Jays underperformed last year, and the opposite for the Red Sox. They’re all human, it happens.

I’d rather have him pitch in a blowout. There have been position players who have gotten wins, though.

Tim Lincecum just pitched his second no-hitter of his career, both times against the Padres.
He also had two hits and scored two runs in a 4-0 win.

And it doesn’t seem to be getting much press. Are no hitters not that big a deal anymore?

It’s the Giants, so nobody cares. :stuck_out_tongue:

It was all over MLBTV.

Strasburg has another meltdown. I’m going to say it: next year, when Jordan Zimmermann’s contract is up, the Nats should do everything they can to keep him, including trading Stras if they need the money.

I’d also be ok with trading Harper at some point as long as the pay day was big enough. Davey Johnson screwed up both Stras and Harp in their freshman year in the bigs.

Given how spectacularly talented Harper is, I am unsure as to what payday WOULD be big enough. To my mind the Nats would have to get someone like Mike Trout in return to make it fair, but nobody will make a trade like that.

I’m not sure what Davey Johnson did to Bryce Harper. Bryce Harper does things to himself. But I’d rather have Bryce Harper than almost any other player in the major leagues; he’ll learn to stop injuring himself in stupid ways.

Arizona has lost an astounding 30 games (out of 45) at home this season, yet they’ve still drawn over a million fans. That’s an awful lot of disappointed (but loyal!) folks going home every night.

I just watched the video on mlb.com showing all of the outs…that had to be the most low-stress no-hitter I’ve ever seen. There were a couple fly balls that the outfielders had to actually run to catch up to; other than that every single ball seemed to be hit directly to a fielder. I swear none of the infielders had to move more than three or four steps all game.

Strasburg just has his days where he can’t get his pitches over. IMHO, that’s what will keep him from being an elite pitcher. Very good, but not great. If anyone wants to offer a trade package based on him being a once in a lifetime talent, I say go for it. Otherwise, he’s still a valuable part of the rotation. Harper I think it’s too early to say, but maybe he’s Steve Finley instead of Willie Mays. These guys were so hyped they were likely to fall short of many people’s expectations.

Yeah maybe… When Steve Finley was 21 years old he was still three years away from his major league debut.

Obviously we do not know for sure what Harper will be, but he is indisputably the best upside bet in baseball. The only good recent comparisons I can think of are Ken Griffey Jr. and Andruw Jones. Something in between those guys would be a hell of a player.

Davey treated Harper like he had already earned his place in the HoF. Do you remember that whole “play me or trade me,” BS from Harp while Johnson was manager? The best thing Matt Williams did was sitting Harper down after he failed to run out a grounder. What to act like a little bitch? There’s plenty of other guys who want to play. The game was around for a long time before Harper and it will be around a long time after him.

I’m with RickJay. Harper is insanely talented and has ridiculous upside. The guy is still 21 years old! You don’t trade him unless someone is offering you the farm.

Johnson was more than happy to bench Harper several times for lack of performance, so I do not for an instant understand the idea that he was treating Harper like he was owed anything.

Harper’s a kid. If a major league organization can’t handle a young player’s immaturity, they aren’t worthy of being called a major league organization. Dealing with the inherent immaturity of very young players is just part of the business.
