MLB: May 2022

Even for the NFL, placing a team in England will present logistical issues, simply because of the travel time involved between the U.S. (particularly for West Coast teams) and London. For an MLB team, it’d be an order of magnitude worse, due to the number of trips made by each team to each opponent’s home city over the course of the season.

Absolutely agreed, but I’ve grown cynical enough not to put it past the owners to consider the attempt, especially if they allow themselves to be deluded into thinking it might make them a quick buck. If it hasn’t already happened, let me predict there will be pundits saying maybe a team like the Rays should consider the move, especially with the team consider how to move on from the Trop.

Another huge problem with a team abroad is how do you get a replacement player in a pinch? Even assuming every possible call up has their travel documents ready to go, there’s still going to be a couple of days at least to fly over and get over jet lag.

Keeping extra players won’t work either, they need to be playing in the minors to stay sharp.

Angels rookie LHP Reid Detmer, making just his 11th career start, pitched a no-hitter in a 12-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Corbin had 5 scoreless innings against Mets last night. Then the bullpen came in and screwed the pooch, but that’s another story.

Yanks are really raising my hopes right now. I am fearful of the injury bug, but this team looks good. Pitching has been outstanding and offense solid.

Just barely 2nd in run differential above the Angels and well behind the Dodgers with a gaudy 80 run differential. Yanks are at 50.

I’ll take little victories from Corbin when I get them. 5 scoreless innings, and pitched out of a jam in the 4th with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs.

The Nats got jumped on early in tonight’s game against the Mets, going into the bottom of the first trailing 3-0, and I BLEW IT by turning the game off. We scored five runs in the first, and are now up 5-3.

Anyone see the clip of Anthony Rendon batting lefty and hitting a homer against a position player pitching?

Yeah - that was a hell of a beer-league swing!

Anthony Rendon looks like yet another shitty, major contract for the Angels. Maybe the Hollywood Lifestyle would have done the putz some good.

Well, he scored a walk-off RBI single the other day against my Nats, his former team, so.

Yanks defense really is solid. Giving up on Sanchez was exactly the right move. I’m a little sad that there isn’t a spot for Gardner but there really isn’t. The team seems to have the spirit that it lacked for the past few years. Great defense, the starting pitching is stronger than we thought, more speed than we’re used to. The deader ball seems to help this team- Judge and Stanton are going to hit HRs no matter what the balls are like, the other teams not so much.

Yanks are looking really good. Offense is doing well and seems to be improving. Players like Torres and Donaldson are warming up now.

Defense is very improved. Though Kiner-Falefa had a bad night. He should have been charged with 2 errors instead of 1. The official scorer was terrible last night.

Pitching has been great, starters and bullpen.

The team has been very healthy so far, so I am waiting for the shoe to drop to some degree.

In the meantime, sitting at .750, 32 games in is amazing. The other 4 times the Yanks started a season this way, they won it all.

Sanchez wasn’t the answer, but neither is the Trevino/Higgy combo. Good lord they’re terrible hitters (Higashioka .424 OPS, Trevino .429 OPS) and Higgy isn’t even all that great defensively. If the Yankees make the postseason, they’re gonna need a deep bench because they’ll be pinch hitting for the catcher every game.
Otherwise, I’m fairly pleased with this team but the results may be a mirage. It’s been a soft part of the schedule, and it gets tougher soon.

2 of the higher rated Yankee Prospects are Catchers, probably the willingness to bide time this year. As while Higgy is kind of average, he isn’t the defensive liability and receiver that Sanchez was.

Austin Wells is a 22 years left swinging Catching Prospect at the High A level. Great bat, but everyone is waiting to see if the D catches up. He’s hitting up a storm already and somehow has 8 Stolen Bases already.

Then #19 & #26 prospects are also catchers.

Antonio Gomez is only 19, so too far away.

Josh Breaux is in AA but 24 already. I don’t like his defense and doubt he is the answer. He also isn’t hitting yet this year.

I am in London and barely paying attention to baseball this week. Are the Reds this cursed to pitch a no hitter and still lose???

Yeah, I saw that game. Starter got into the 8th with no hits surrendered but walked 2 in a row and was at 118 pitches, so got pulled. Reliever gave up another walk to load the bases. Then a fielder’s choice got a Pirates baserunner home for 1 run.

I live near the Hudson Valley stadium (high-A Yankees affiliate, South Atlantic League) and have been to five or six games so far this year. Wells looks very good. Today he was 3-for-5 with another stolen base (and he has no caught stealings). Strikes out more than you’d like, but that’s true of just about everybody these days. Makes good contact when he hits the ball. His arm looks pretty good too–don’t know about pitch framing and other defensive issues.

Of course Josh Breaux played quite well when he was here last year, so who knows. There are a lot of uncertainties with a player in High-A, but I think Wells has a decent chance.

You know how they say the great thing about baseball is the possibility that you’ll see something you’ve never seen before? Well, it happened in today’s game–the first (and likely only) time I have ever seen a game end on an attempted steal of home. Dramatic to be sure.
