I was at a game in Cleveland in 1958 in which Vic Power ended the game in extra innings by stealing home. It was his second steal of home in that game. He was fast, but not really a base stealer.
Technically speaking, because the Reds were the visiting team and the game-winning run occurred in the bottom of the 8th inning, it wasn’t a no-hitter because the Reds’ pitchers didn’t pitch nine innings.
It’s the top of the ninth in St. Louis and Albert Pujols is pitching.
Cubs catcher Willson Contreras accomplished a rare feat during Chicago’s 9-0 win over Pittsburgh:
Batting lead off, he doubled to start the bottom of the first. The Cubs batted around, and Contreras came to the plate again. This time, he hit a grand slam (which was also his 100 career home run).
So, at first glance, it looks like Contreras hit a grand slam. From the lead off spot. In the first inning.
He was also only the 10th person since 1901 to hit a first inning grand slam from the lead off spot as their second at-bat.
I’m truly surprised it has happened 10 times in 122 years.
other than some teams being better than expected (like the white sox) or worse than expected (braves ) there are not many surprises so far in the standings … edit:lol same as it was when the OP posted lol
Awesome about the 1st inning GS by the leadoff hitter. Thanks for sharing.
League-wide hitting has gotten a touch better over the past few weeks: the league average is now .234. The A’s are the worst-hitting team in the league at this point, still below the Mendoza Line at .199.
Batting averages are now pretty close to the full-year average from last year (.244), which was still anemic, compared to historical numbers.
Are there any baseball podcasts that discuss the day to day MLB that haven’t been hijacked by gambling? I’ve got time at work this summer that might be a bit slow.
I doubt it. Gambling ads and talk have absolutely taken over sports media. It’s appalling, and I have been planning on starting a whole thread about it.
I auto-block accounts on Twitter that are about sports gambling, and so far I’ve blocked probably a thousand of them (not an exaggeration.)
I know, it sucks. At least baseball history podcasts are numerous and they don’t become dated.
It’s not day to day, but Effectively Wild is usually about 3 times a week and does not have any gambling talk (except to complain about it. Or as part of MLB news) it’s more about league news, stats and pedantry and history than the games that just happened, so probably not what you want completely.
My baseball podcast habits are usually about fantasy, but the Athletic baseball pods are really good, and some of them are about regular baseball, not fantasy. “Rates and Barrels” is excellent - Eno Sarris and Britt Ghiroli are fantastic. There’s also a daily pod called “The Baseball Show” that does a daily MLB update.
None of them have any gambling content, but the ads are usually about gambling.
Former Yankees third-round draft pick Jake Sanford has been released for a bizarre reason-- he was stealing equipment from his teammates and re-selling it online.
Matt Harvey who is currently on a minor league contract in the Orioles system, has been suspended 60 games for distributing oxycodone.
An apparent sacrifice fly to tie the score in the Nats/Marlins game in the bottom of the 9th was turned into a game-ending double play when apparently the guy on third didn’t wait to leave the bag until after the ball was caught in right field. For awhile we had a final score of 4-3, Nats. But the Marlins challenged and it was overturned. The score became 4-4 and the game was back on, with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, and runners on 1st and 2nd after a video review that lasted more than 4 minutes.
And then the Nats won in the 10th.
There was no question the runner tagged up properly. Robot umps won’t solve everything.
Yanks are doing well in all areas. A 757% win pct incredible. Gallo & Hicks are underperforming and Catcher offense has been minimal but no big surprise there.
The starters have been great. Nestor Cortes number are crazy good and Cole is 4-0 and down to a 2.89 ERA. Monty at a 3.06 ERA 1.075 WHIP is in desperate need of some run support. Severino has pitched the worst of the starters and his 3-0.
Meanwhile the bullpen has been a strength also. Especially Michael King & Clay Holmes. Holmes has a .44 ERA and .738 WHIP. He is 4-0 with 7 holds. Miguel Castro, who we got from the Mets in a trade has been better than the back of his baseball card so far. He gave up 2 runs in one appearance and allowed 1 inherited runner to score thrice so far. So probably will be used primarily to start an inning and not high leverage situations.
Chapman has been shaky of late. Chad Green seems to have settled down and is returning to form. His strikeouts are up and he is looking more consistent in May. Loaisiga & Luetge have been erratic so far.
No, you’re absolutely right. They got it right after the review. I’m just glad we were able to pull out the 10th-inning victory and salvage a game in the series.
I’d go insane if I had to watch Joey Gallo every day. Can’t stand the 200 Ks and 40 HRs approach.
