MLB: May 2023

About that move the A’s are making to Las Vegas:

Forget “close to the Strip.” Now it’s “on the Strip.”

I’d been thinking the Tropicana site as I don’t think the Trop has had any major updates in over ten years and probably much longer than that. But, I’m sure adding ballpark traffic to the Strip will be fun.

It looks like the plan is for Bally’s to build a new 1500 room hotel/casino “across from the ballpark.” That will take care of a lot of the visitors. Notice the new site is easy to get to by tram/monorail, which should also cut down on the traffic a bit.

Of course, if the A’s play in Vegas as well as they play in Oakland, traffic won’t be a problem!

This article seems very… er, speculative.

It’s starting to feel like “possibly not in Las Vegas at all.” What a fiasco.

Ball players can be a superstitious lot. Mookie Betts doesn’t want to stay at a ‘haunted’ hotel.

And now the odd case of the Chicago White Sox. They got off to a terrible start at 7-20 and actually lost ten games in a row. They set or flirted with several records of April futility and looked like the fire sale should start NOW and not in August. Thing is, 7 of their first 17 games were against the Rays, a team that set or flirted with several records of MLB April success, so the look was skewed. Since they mercifully finished with the Rays, they have been 6 - 4 and are only 6.5 games behind a Twins team that is a meager 2 games over .500.

During the debacle, I did some research on the teams with the worst April records in MLB history, and there was one common thread. They were awful the whole season, not just in April. The Sox, however, have a chance to come back and win the division. That would be quite something. We shall see as we move forward.

Scherzer scratched yesterday. This really doesn’t look good for him. The Nats may be stuck with Corbin and Strasburg, but they did avoid a long term deal with Scherzer so let him be stuck with the Mets and their problem.

The Mets are spending $350 million or whatever it is and they look really bad.

Well, they’ve lost 2 of 3 to the Royals with a game left in the series. And KC is absolutely pathetic.

Has Oakland been mathematically eliminated yet?

Nope, just emotionally eliminated.

One could say that about the fan base, too. :frowning:

Both of them?

Hey now - they have the highest OBP and SLG in the AL Central! And their run differential is better than the 19-19 Marlins. It’s a weird team that only scores runs in bunches. Once they get some pitching, they could be almost decent.

Will that be anytime this decade?

Decade’s almost over, Railer. Whaddya want here?!

Hey, they just took 3 of 4 from the ChiSox. They won today on a walk-off bunt. They’re on a major roll!

I thought this was satire at first, but you can actually buy bird bath seats for the Orioles and volunteer to get wet?

Meanwhile I’m a bit grumpy looking at the forecast of intermittent showers for my first time at the all you can eat section for the White Sox tonight.

Chris Bassitt just shut out the Atlanta Braves.

I couldn’t even remember the last time I saw a Blue Jays pitcher throw a shutout. Apparently Hyun-Jin Ryu did it in 2021, but I don’t remember that. It feels damn near as rare as a no hitter these days.
